Question about feminism

I have a question. If feminism is about the equalization of rights between men and women, why isn't it called equalism?

I hear constantly that men should be feminists because all it calls for is equality, but if that's what the movement really wants then why is it titled in support of only one of the groups it is hoping to equalize.

I asked this to a professor i know who is very passionate feminist, and she showed me this image and that this is what feminists want, equity not equality:


But I am sorry how the fuck does this make sense with any feminist arguments? Isn't the whole point of feminism to stop how society sees women as less from the start? and how a women should not be judged just for being a woman? but if equity is the defining principle then isn't that quite literally saying that women are less from the start and therefor need more help to be as good as men.

My point is if that feminism isn't about equality anymore it's about "feeling" equal than actual equality stop telling me that it's about equality

A huge issue with feminism is that so many people toss one word around to describe a bunch of different things. Tumblr Feminazis have convoluted and ruined the word, as have many other misinformed women. The sad thing is that this always hurts the image of feminism, tainting it for us regular people who agree with third wave feminism ideology.

Your Prof is a dingbat. 3rd wave basically says that in order to reach equality we should not view any sex or race as different or deficient at anything. Gender roles should not exist and all that. The other two waves deal with the picture you posted and, to me, are still debatable. This isn't exclusive to feminism either, it's seen in racial issues as well. This issue has always seemed more political than feminist to me and I honestly have no answer for you other than its up to you to decide what you think.

However, don't discount feminism completely because of this. There are very good elements to it and what your prof believes is not a completely universal truth in feminism. Learn more about third wave, it actually makes a good deal of sense and doesn't have the issues of second.

But really, it's all just ideology so don't over think it. Everyone is a hypocrite in some way or another and every line of thinking has its own issues.

I doubt his professor would argue that women are different and possess deficiencies in comparison to men. I think she would argue that the society we have built makes it seem as if women are different and deficient when compared to men. And I don't think she's wrong. Gender roles, right now, are almost always to the advantage of men. This professor's idea of feminism is to get society to the point where what you believe becomes possible. Right now, it isn't.

The idea behind that picture, op, and what your professor is trying to say, is that right now, men inherently have a leg up in society over women. Treating them equally isn't going to solve this problem, therefore we must turn to equity.

The word "feminism," like any other word that's ever existed, has a unique linguistic history associated with it. Feminism as an ideology initially started with female thinkers who wanted to end systematic oppression of women, and over the years moved on to encompass other identities as well. It's the same reason why here in the US "liberal" means, roughly, "left-leaning" whereas in the rest of the world it means the opposite. You'd be a straight fucking retard if, as a liberal in America, you moved to Australia and decided to vote for the "liberals" there just because of the name.

If you can't get past the name of an idea to understand the idea itself then you probably aren't putting in a good-faith effort to understand, and are merely attempting to contradict, from the outset.

as for the equalism question, how can you be annoyed by the name "feminism" (the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic EQUALITY to men, according to google) if the entirety of the human race is called "mankind" and not "humankind"? it's just a word.

also, if you consider yourself an equalist, you are also a feminist by definition, since that is one focus of equalism, namely the gender part.

everyone just needs to fucking chill about this.

The truth is "feminism" as a phrase has been completely ruined by radical people. It's true definitely is that women are treated the same as men and that's it, none of this other bullshit you see, it's quite a shame how terrible the word feminism is in our society.

Same reason for affirmative action. White males are institutionally given advantages both socially and economically. Things are slowly changing so that the genders are viewed on more equal levels.

However I absolutely do not believe the genders are equal and i think it is bullshit to think so. Each has strengths and weaknesses and in a capitalist economy those should be fully exploited.

1. I'm talking about women in the same job as men. The men almost always get payed more.
2. This stat it ridiculous. Is there one girl you can think of that you know personally that you couldn't beat up? Men can defend themselves from a women. Women can't. Men are just built bigger and stronger. That's the difference in the domestic assault situation.

Emma Watsons he for she speech highlighted these injustices but for some unknown reason men like you completely ignore this project by the UN I might add in favour of a woman sitting on tumblr complaining about stare rape. You need to broaden your knowledge of feminism much further than what you see on facebook and tumblr. Feminism is trying to help men.

I should mention that i am talking exclusively about what feminism is, and not what it is "supposed" to be. Feminism now is like Communism sure in concept it is great and what its supposed to be, and do is great but humanity has a way of fucking good things up for everyone. For that reason I like to consider myself an equalist because the movement that should be good and righteous is not and a new label is needed. i am by no means saying that women deserve anything less that equality, just commenting on how the feminist movement as it is now in the media is not only lying what it says it want equality but also contradictory of that message in what they really want.

Don't really think this is true except for a small minority of people. Unfortunately, like all extremists, this minority's voice is being given a lot of attention so it seems like it makes up a bigger proportion of the movement than it really does. Try not to get tricked by this.

Ugh. So my alma mater chose to not renew the women's hockey coaches contract because her salary was obscene and one of the highest paid in the country (nobody goes to womens hockey games either). Her teams have not been very good the past 5 years and since womens hockey already loses tons of money, they can't afford to pay her 1/4 million a year.

Should be easy enough, coaches get fired all the time even after winning seasons because if the higher ups feel they aren't living up to what they're getting paid, they're gone. Right!?

Well now she is suing my school saying she was let go because she's a woman, a gay woman at that...

Also have been reading articles that womens coaches have been getting replaced by mens coaches at an alarming rate, even in womens sports. Geezus kriste, could it have anything to do with the liability they incur when hiring women!?

My fiancee is a doctor and I might be a stay at home at some point assuming oil prices keep going to shit and i lose my job and we have kids.
If this whole "women get paid 77 cents on the dollar that men get paid" is true, wouldn't I more than anyone be pissed because that means she should be making 50k more per year if there wasn't gender pay discrimination? Well I'm not pissed because it's a crock of shit!
