East Coast People, whats everybody's deal with singles on lifts.

So I ski solo a lot during the week, and I'm noticing this weird thing happening more and more here on the good ol' easy coast. I always get into line solo, and every time the group in front behind me that doesn't have a full four people or whatever the lift just sits back and lets me go ahead alone. Maybe I'm being a bit sensitive here but, what the fuck? It feels like there isn't really a sense of community around here with park skiers, everyone just rides in their cliques and does everything they can to ignore everyone else. Wouldn't it be more fun if the park was just a 24/7 party sesh all the time?

this is true. filling lifts is for the common good, everybody has a longer wait if seats are left empty.

yeah dude everyone has their own little ski group in the east coast. Im used to it since i live here but when i went to whis everyone was super chill and always talked it up i mean there wasnt a choice because you couldnt just hang back due to how long the line was because thatd just piss people off but either way they were nice. I wouldnt really take much offence to it though because they just want to ride the lift with their friends and do their thing. i wouldnt think of it as them not wanting to sit with you based on how good you are or the way you look or some shit like that because if thats the case thats just stupid.

Nah yeah I've gown up here so like I totally get it and I'm not really salty about it... but just like you after being out west in Whis and stuff it just seems so much more chill. You never know what cool people you are going to meet on the lift its nice.

I grew up skiing with my dad and learned to get to the top as fast as possible. when i started skiing with kids that started in their teens i noticed this trend emerging, ill be honest ive been in on it a few times, but now that im a little older fuck that. im just tryna go skiing, ill go up with whoever ive met a lot of cool peopel id never pass up a chance to meet someone especially if they look like theyve got something good to say

Same thing in the Midwest. Everybody my age is a park skier that can't ski all-mountain, racer, or a gaper... and they always stay in their little groups.

I'm just an outlier that doesn't meet a lot of people. I feel kind of left out, but I have a lot of fun exploring and ripping around outside of the park.

I do feel like this is true, and if a park skier hops on the lift with friends and I from the singles line I'll chat with them for sure, but sometimes you just want to keep it low effort and ride the lift with friends. Also, if I'm a single, sometimes I'm stoked to talk with random homies on the lift, but sometimes I just want to take my own chair so I don't feel like I'm weirdly sitting off to the side being silent when I don't have the energy to talk to people.

Yeah I feel you man. I get that unfortunately with a lot of snowboarders and skiers out here at Carinthia and it's just unfortunate. This exact scenario happened to me yesterday there and left me a bit confused, but I ended up riding up with a skier and his either 6 year old little brother or son, point being the kid shreds and was hitting rainbow rails. The older guy was chill as hell introduced himself and everything and it was just a good experience. We definitely need more camaraderie around here in the east because a lot of the time the vibe is kind of hostile and just not welcoming.

people on the east coast are generally snobby, rude, and tend to avoid contact with strangers at all costs

You can't generalize the entire East Coast. Sometimes this happens, but in my experience, people are pretty friendly to singles. At Carinthia, most people are pretty friendly imo.

At my midwest resort nobody will pair up if you dont speak up. If you speak up then 90% of the time they will say yes and we have a fun chat on the lift. I ski alone 90% of the time.

Music. Problem solved. If they wanna talk turn it down, if they're chads turn it up. Riding solo, get in your head and think about your next lap. Quit bitching and enjoy the mtn when people hold back and let me get a single chair I just look back and say thanks guys and spread out on the chair. Ive met cool people and total dicks riding singles just go with the flow.

Even more, I feel like singles AREN'T hopping on the lift with me and my buddies. Maybe they don't want to associate with 'park rats' or have their own reasons, but I can assure you that I'll make conversation and be more polite/social than 99% of other skiers. I feel like the general stereotypical idea that most park skiers are rebellious and disobedient little pricks, which is really only true for the 1%, is holding the us back from the sense of community that we lack.

So lame. Hard working folks at doppelmayr bust tail to make chairs that can hold 4 people. It is insulting to let empty seats go by when people are waiting in line.

Yeah idk why but when I ski solo 95% of the time the people just let me go ahead, I don't know why, I don't care if I ride with a family of three or alone. As long as I get to the top I'm fine

It sorta depends. In a lot of massachusetts resorts, everyone pretty much skis together. In like NH or ME, it is as you explained where people really keep to their own groups.

bro, they probably just want to put one in the air but don't have enough for randos. Don't take it personally.

I sort of disagree, I find that park skiers will let you sit with them but its the gaper families that will try to avoid you.

Sometimes when im alone I just find a group of three in the front of the line and ask if I can ride with them. I dont think anyone has ever said no. It saves me and others time and since chairlifts in the midwest are pretty short its not a big deal

This is a common theme almost everywhere, because during the week you mostly get douchey retired locals or racers, so they dont really want to ride up with other people because they think they're entitled to their own personal chair. I wouldn't take it personally.

imo its people in the east's general lack of wanting to interact with strangers, its not just noticeable on the ski hill

also, there are more weekend warrior/ski once a year people back east, so many of them simply aren't aware of the fill the chair etiquette

If im riding solo I let the group start to go then I go. Can't stand when people go solo. Also have gone between a couple before, thats really awkward

Oh god, not the whole blame racers for all the world's problems thing again. Park rats are often just as douchey on chair lifts. I've had way more problems with park rats being dicks on chairs than racers. Stop making generalizations about whole groups of people. It doesn't help anything.

This does happen a lot. Couple weeks ago I was in line for a triple chair and asked to guys if I could join them. Guy looks at me, turns around without saying a word, then moves over to make sure I can't get in. Get on the chair behind them and immediately they pull a joint out and start smoking it.

Hahahahahah laughing because I am a racer... and when I'm training I usually want to either ride by myself or with friends, and I know my friends are the same. I just observe that the weekday crowd is usually those kinds of people. Not trying to put my own group of skiers in a negative light at all. And besides, I can probably make more valid generalizations about racers than anyone else... Also I never said racers were dicks on the lift. Sometimes we just prefer to keep to ourselves and ride alone/with close friends.

People talk a lot more out West. In the East, you often just look at each other, give a gentle nod and just go up the lift silently.
