Replying to Suicide

I just found out one of my friends killed himself last night. His wife posted some stuff in the early hours of the morning asking if anyone knew where he was and then got a message from another friend asking the same thing. A short while later, I got a message from that friend saying that he's gone and that he committed suicide. After going through some e-mails, it sounds like it was carefully planned and thought out.

I'm a social worker and have gone through suicide intervention training and know what to look for, but still missed it. I mean we didn't necessarily hang out all the time, but he was still a friend. He introduced me to backpacking last summer and was a quirky, but really good guy.

Have you guys gone through this before? How do you deal? I think me and another friend are going to go over to their place tonight and help out with the animals/chores/etc. His wife is staying with other friends.
