Gapers Putting Us all in Danger, What to do?

Today i flipped out on some little kids dad cause his son snaked me and went off the side of a kicker when i was riding in switch. normally ill just swear to myself and go to the next feature but over the past couple of weekends I've had way to many falls and close calls because of little fucks that do not have any park etiquette.

incident 1.

so i landed switch off a rail and riding away, before i could revert or even look over my shoulder, i trucked a kid and did a switch backflip practically concussing myself. he had carved right into the landing of the rail without a second thought.

i got up and skied away.

Incident 2.

sending a flat 3 over a spine, as i came around and spotted my landing, i see a little girl hiking up about 10 feet in front of me. i quickly pull it to 450 and stop within inches of the kid.

impressed with my save, i didn't freak out and just rode away.

Incident 3.

riding into a small jump for a switch 5. as I'm moving in, quite fast too, a little kid in an Okemo racing jacket rips in right in front of me from the side to hit the side of the kicker. this time was it. after stopping i see this kid ride over to his dad watching admirably. i shouted "are you fucking kidding me,"not having it anymore, and the dad replies with "control yourself."

i was ready to throw some fucking hands. i ride over to this guy and proceed to shout at this guy about how his kid is gonna get me and himself killed.

he replies with "control yourself."

i point at this little kids racing jacket. "how many times have you seen me on the race course, this is the one trail on the mountain with a park, don't come in here and put everybody in danger!"

"control yourself he's 7."

"i don't care how old he is, I'm not mad at him, I'm mad at you and how you think what he's doing is alright!"

"THE KIDS 7 CONTROL YOURSELF."

"GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE PARK."

I rode away.

So long story short, I've had enough of this shit, and so has every park skier i know.
how do we stop this shit, all of the snaking, side jumping, lack of respect, and gapers trying to kill us?

also, ski patrol pulls passes for jumping over rollers but doesn't do a thing about kids sitting in the landings of jumps.

I have this problem at my mountain all the time, the kids race team will be lead through the park by their adult coach and sit on features. It's dangerous for everyone. My friend hit a jump and one of the racers got smacked because she was in the landing and we couldn't see them, the coach yelled at us. There are plenty of trails to race and gape on, the park is not one of them. I recently saw a lady on facebook complaining that my home mountain was using snow to build jumps instead of opening one of the last trails that is still roped off, I really do not understand the audacity of some people

Johngreenacrei am always careful when skiing, i call my drop, i look around. why should i have to dial back my skiing when i am following the rules? and telling me to ski elsewhere? that confuses me considering this thread has almost 400 uproots meaning it is not an isolated problem.

Once again, i made this thread looking for solutions. if you do not have one to provide, you might as well leave. And besides, everything you have been commenting is getting down voted, so i think i have the back of the majority in saying this.

You were right i didn't handle the situation well, and i admit this, so if thats your point, you have made it.


You're gonna have a tough time in life with that kind of attitude. I hope you don't run into the wrong person next time you go ballistic on someone and their 7 year old child.

As for thinking that you shouldn't have to change your skiing when conditions around you become unsafe... I don't know what to tell you man. You're just looking for a collision.

If its between either the gaper or me getting injured whether it be standing over a roller, lip, middle of trail, etc...

I will protect myself and lower a shoulder to prevent injury if I have to every single time. I'm not getting injured becuase someone doesn't know what the heck they are doing. Standing in the landing of the jump? Im going to plow into you if I cant get out of the way in time. If someone comes up and tries to argue with me I wont even acknowledge them and just ski away. Never have had a massive incident but the few times a patroller got involved they always understand my side of the story and go with me since I never blow up and am respectful.

The only way humans learn...pain, humiliation, loss of $ or life.

I understand that they are in the wrong on hill, but being a screaming, swearing douche in front of kids doesn't help your cause . Every time I have an issue like this, i approach the parent and calmly tell the parent that I'm not mad I missed my hit, I'm mad they are recklessly putting both their child and others in danger.
And if I'm hitting a side jump outside the park and almost hit someone, I apologize profusely, that shits on me

THEDIRTYBUBBLEMountains should adopt a "no rentals in the park" policy. It wouldn't be fullproof, but it would be effective.


Trollhaugen where I ski has this. It kinda works I guess but so many little kids have their own race skis and its hard to check everyone's so it doesn't fully solve the problem. I agree it should be more commonly used

You, OP, were in the wrong, and should have had your pass taken for the day. Yes, little gaper kids are frustrating and the parents are the problem. That does not give you the right to swear, yell, and intimidate the kid and parent.


THe dad handled himself and the situation well. you did not.


He wasn't in front of the kid saying that...

No, but a sane father would absolutely physically step in and defend his 7 year child eg. Shove, grab the perpetrator etc. And if that teenager physically retaliated would get his teeth punched in.

You also should realize that you cannot tell someone's age very well in ski gear if they are of normal adult size.

I Don't want to condone violence on the hill, or say it is warranted in this situation. I'm just saying that fucking with small children will get patents irrationally angry.

I have a feeling that guy gets yelled at in the park a lot and his feelings are hurt. Keep on smashing the gapes!

OP did the wrong thing, but im 100% guilty of doing it too.

Once i was lapping the park and a 7 year old had taken her skis off and started climbing on the lip of a 30ft jump like it was a jungle gym; her father approvingly looking on. At first i ignored it and did my lap. When i came back for a second run the kid was still there doing a snow angle in the middle of the jump.

I lost it

I came into the jump going mach 10 and speed check right in her face spraying her with a metric ton of snow. the dad lost his shit and tried to fight me, from which i did not back down.

it wasn't the right thing to do and looking back i feel like a douche but i understand why OP flipped out, we have all been there.

Its retarded on our hill, especially with NCC, I dont see how they dont just go on Galaxy, we had to tell our friend to inform her adult coach to not have the little racers go down the park, that shouldnt have to happen. This weekend was ridiculous, they came in waves and trying to film with that is awful. Im ready to go off on the parents or the kids, if theyre of age to deal with my wrath. A dad told his kid to "watch out for the other kids" on the big park and the kid immediately just got in everyones way. Im gonna snap very soon.

Saw a couple of gapers having a fucking snowball fight on the middle jump of a 3 set. Literally blew my mind. They weren't even on the knuckle they were on the kicker

my friend broke some girls leg. he was doing a front four and she was right in the landing his ski hit her right above her boot. her dad was right there and started yelling at us. then my friend just said she was in the landing and it was her fault and the guy just shut his mouth.

earlier in the season Whistler put in a down box that was almost a ride on, with probably 2-3 inches of the box sticking up from the lip, you could 50-50 it if you buttered on to it, so people had done it a few times, making it sort of look like a ride on.

some dad and his little ones roll through the park, side hitting lips for rails, which is annoying but expected, its whistler after all. but when the kid went towards the box, instead of hitting it like a jump he simply ploughed straight into the front of the box, double ejected and face planted on the box, sliding down and off the end. Once again, annoying, but the kid looked ok and now he's learned to be careful in the park.

What pissed me off is that the dad proceeded to ride up to the feature and stop on the lip, which proceeded to transform the lip into a lump as this was not a dad who was in shape. And then pull the sign, and put it across the take-off, as if there was something wrong with the feature. Justifying his sons actions, as it wasn't the kids fault, but instead the mountains.


Park passes suck, but even if the kids and dad bought one for some reason, it would have likely prevented this situation from ever happening, as maybe they would understand how the park works.

Always nicer to ride in a park with parkpassed .... not perfect, but waayyyy better !
Doesnt need to be expensive; just enough so people who doesnt ride the park for real (i mean do the features instand of just playing around them) wont buy it.

It doesn't even have to cost money. Snoqualmie makes you take a 20 minute or so class before you can get a park pass. I feel like the hassle is way more of an impediment than the five dollars it costs. But seriously there have been times where I went to ride to ride park at night, didnt have a park pass, there wasn't a way to get one, so I had to secretly poach by jumping the ropeline in the lower park. Off topic, just had to share

I yelled at a snowboard on Sunday. In the end it saves other people and them from future problems. I try to be nice about it and sometimes I am a little rude if its a bad situation. I have no issue with this.

I nailed a little girl this year landing switch off a jump, so I know how you feel. But seriously? Have some respect, and do your best to calmly explain the issue next time. This is how park skiers get a bad rep. Not to mention you probably scared away a little kid that was showing some interest in park.

RparrI get so sick of this same shit. Every day in ohio. One time a kid snaked me getting into a rail, I was coming at it from so high up but he cut in last second and got in the rail at Mach potato. So I did he only logical thing and pushed him downhill off the rail. It was glorious. I may or may not have footage of it.....


I was hoping that link would lead me to a glorious faper being pushed off a rail. Nice edit tho

So right before the video starts you were stopped above the rail waiting for your camera bitch to yell "ok" right? Then you just went, ignoring responsibility code #4 "Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others." If that's what happened you're the snake.

Captain douche here is 100% in the wrong. Check up hill before you start going. Also everyone know that it isn't snaking if the person is taking a full run through the park.

Sigh. Read thread and comments before posting. been over this whole thing to many times.

first off i don't know who you are and why you are on newschoolers (seems like the wrong site), but before commenting something like that actually read what i have said. i yelled at the kids dad.

also, if you're a father and you would initiate a physical fight in front of your child, that is extremely irresponsible.

get off the thread. as i have stated numerous times, the thread was not about the fight, it was about a safety issue we freestyle skiers have, and what we should do about it. if you do not have a solution, get off the thread.

Alright I've had enough of this, I'm surprised there hasn't been more support from this community, this is a safety issue that effects many, its not about a few guys running their mouths within earshot of kids. that was just what provoked this, cause i knew this wasn't an option.

Regardless of whether you were snaked or not, that's no reason to try to wreck someone. I'm very against on hill lawsuits, but if that was me and I had gotten hurt, you would have been hearing from a lawyer

nothing's gained by yelling at people. Recently I was doing a butter 2 on, called my drop, got the thumbs up from my filmer and dropped in. As I was spinning up the lip (onto dance floor) a little girl came in at Mach speed from the side and jumped across the box, nearly colliding with me.

I gave my filmer the what the fuck??? hands and skied down to the father and child. First thing I asked was if she was okay. Then I went to explain to the father as calmly as I could that it was more dangerous for her than me, and that I wasn't upset, just concerned because if a 60lb 8 year old hits 165lb me when I'm spinning, it gonna end a lot worse for her.

By doing that I'm making the parent realize how they are putting they're child endanger and they also respect you a ton more if it seems like you are concerned about they're kid and not just some raging pubescent teenager. Approach people like that and you might get more shit done.

Anybody would get frustrated. The father must have known they were in the wrong, they had literally no argument and so just repeated to control themself. From the sounds of it OP was in control and the father was in the wrong from the moment they trailed their 7 yo through the park. The simple fact is if you can't ski the level of feature you should stay away from it i.e. The same reason they grade runs. To stop people getting out their depth and putting themself and others at risk.

Some solutions to gapers gaping
Run marker poles angled outward in the sides of lips to rails to reduce side jumpers
Signs set out wider than you would speed check carve saying 'no stopping on the jump landing' which reduces gapers in the landings and stops punters snowplow turning down the run ins.
Fences down the sides of run-ins/outs of kickers to stop strays

But really all these are passive measures and it really needs staff policing the park and riders pulling dangerous people aside and helping them understand the danger they're putting everyone in.

last year a ski patrol guy snaked my brother. It didnt seem like he had any idea how a park works and was just skiing over the landings. I lost all respect for patrol that day. Maybe if ski patrol knows whats going on they'll be smarter about it

I'm just not a huge fan of folks that are super proud of being assholes and I'd like that behavior to stop.

Gapers aren't assholes, they don't know they're doing anything wrong.

I'd like to see gateway features at the top of parks. Something super mellow for people who actually ski well, but fucking terrifying to gapers... Like a 10' tall flat takeoff catttack gap kinda thing. MTB has gateway features on the tougher bike park trails, why shouldn't skiing?

But honestly, park passes work well from what I have seen.

THEDIRTYBUBBLEMountains should adopt a "no rentals in the park" policy. It wouldn't be fullproof, but it would be effective.


My home hill (Liberty pa) had this a couple years back but it was only for their park with the big features. Unfortunately they no longer have it. I have to say no hill will do it because a unfortunate amount of renters get in the hill to "ski" park.

Man I don't get these modern gapers. When I was one I would stand at the top of the jump trying to grow the balls to hit it for 5 minutes.

I'm glad I don't ski park much haha.

I'm never really mad at the kids, i'm mad at the people who are old enough to drive, who ski or snowboard like it's not a freeway...

I've yelled at a good amount of people who are sitting in BAD places on the hill... If you wouldn't stop on the freeway, don't stop in the terrain park or high traffic area to sit on your ass.
