Where did you fuck up?

At what time in your life did you fuck up the most? Did you flunk out of school? Lose a friend? Waste time? Waste money? Sacrifice your dreams?

I made the mistake of falling into the "fuck the system" mind set, letting that take over all ambitions i had of going to university, having a career, etc... Mainly to do with abusing cannabis through highschool.

Interested to see where other people have gone wrong, and what you have done to fix those wrongdoings.

Consider this an NS therapy thread.

I wish i would have gone to a JC to play ball for a couple years and then tranfered to a D1 school on scholarship. I was 5'10" 140lbs when i graduated highschool and had a few low level D1 offers but was so burnt out on the athletic "system" i said fuck it. By the end of freshman year in college i was 6'3" 190lbs and absolutely tore up the semipro summer league in my area that summer. Then i got my shoulder reconstructed that next summer even though i had no pain or ill effect on my throwing motion- a week after surgery i tore everything again by slipping in the shower and now its unfixable and does cause issues with throwing.

Oddly enough throwing a football doesnt hurt, but baseball just puts too much torque on it.




Other than that, i was lucky enough to have been put in awesome situations, and have chosen the right path most of the time.

Made the mistake of banging a girl who later turned out to be crazy and filed false rape charges against me. Basically turned the first 5 months of my senior year into a living hell due. Eventually I was cleared and now shits pretty much back to normal. I'm definitely traumatized by that shit though it affected me pretty badly.

Brand new pair of skis, first day skiing on them. My first pair EVER of my very own new skis, and I loved them. LINE chronics 2013, with some nice bindings. My dad bought them for me as the entirity of my Christmas present, so I was pretty stoaked on them. I had a blast skiing them, loving every single second. All done and heading into the lodge, I decide to not lock my skis up in the racks, because it was just took much work. I locked them together instead of locking them to anything. Went in, had some dinner, was really happy. Came out with all my gear, ready to go home, and I couldn't find them. I'm looking all over thinking "I definitely put them right here"... Panic sets in as I realize that my brand new babies are missing. I run to some office screaming my skis have been stolen, security guy doesn't give a shit, I'm flipping out. I had my skis taken from me that day. About 600$ worth of precious gear was taken from me. I was devastate, i felt so bad, my only christmas present had been stolen and it was my fault, all because I had been lazy. I couldn't believe someone would do that, steal someone's skis.... Now I always lock up my skis, or put them by the window and watch them like a hawk. I'm not a violent guy, never been in a fight, never really mean to people. But, if I saw some guy stealing my skis, I would fucking assault him. Beat him until he cried, show him what it feels like....

Moral of this story is watch yo shit, people are horrible

From 6th grade to 8th grade I started to care less for school, middle school was a bad time for myself and then once freshmen year hit I had lost all the motivation. Now Im a senior and Im trying to scrape together my GPA, not that I want to go a good and big school but I wanna have something decent looking on paper. I basically just stopped caring about school and I still kinda work hard enough to get by...Dont be like me in terms of school

the most? highschool/spliffs, started mixing dope with my smokes and it didn't end well for my grades or my health, and i'm still carrying around an annoying spliff habit but i'm pretty damn good at hiding it from my workplace. I also missed more classes in grade 12 than I attended, called six out of eight courses that year a loss *including english 12, and didn't attend my prom or grad ceremonies but that is very fortunately for me, my past.

was a pretty fucking good wake up call though. i'm putting money away for an engineering degree or an architect's degree(?) so that should be neat, I'll be going back to school when i'm like 25 and I don't even give a fuck lol

I fucked up my grades really bad freshman year. My parents were going through a divorce after my dad had an affair. I was extremely mad and I didn't talk to my dad for almost 3 months. My dad also got fired from his job so we had to rely on family just to pay for my tuition at private school and couldn't afford basic things like gas or food. Through all of that I ended up getting a 2.4 GPA. Sophomore year, at a new school, I ended up getting a 3.7 and this year I have a 3.8. What I am getting at is because I fucked up really bad freshman year, it is limiting my choices for college. I still have a good shot at some quality schools, but nowhere near the schools I could be accepted to had my freshman year gone a lot better. It kind of sucks because college is so crucial in your success in life. But I guess all things happen for a reason.

The name value of your college is good for only 2 things- getting your very first entry level job, and can be the final small thing to get you into a top notch grad school assuming all your other measurables are 99.9% percentile.


The reason you think it is so crucial is because very succesful people come out of those top schools. Ever thought that only very smart and motivated people are accepted into the school in the first place? What matters is how smart and motivated YOU are. the school doesnt make the student, the student makes the school.

I'm only in high school so I obviously don't have a great grasp on how the world works, but I think your success relative to your education kind of depends on your field. Like many entrepreneur's or business men went to just fine colleges and some didn't even go to college at all but still became incredibly successful. However, I would say that's not the case at all in S.T.E.M related fields, which is what I want to pursue. I have pretty high expectations of myself so my idea of "success" might be different from yours. Not to sound like a cocky douche but I guess that's kind of my stance on it.

Not too much that i can recall. My favorite one as of recently was leaving my wallet behind when i drove an hour to SLC to find some ski boots. Had the biggest "ahhhhh fuck" moment when i went to go pay for them.

Im a proffessional Civil Engineer.

My idea of "success" is for sure different than yours sounds like. However i likely know very well what your view of success is, especially coming from the hometown i did. If you want to go into it, id be happy to answer any questions you have through PMs.


But, the point is- dont worry too much about what college you get into. just get a degree in what you like, work hard, and make sure you have fun and meet lots of people. Hard work and smarts will put you into position to be succesful no matter what. Beyond that, its still luck of the draw.

Not going to visit my grandpa the day before he passed away. Definitely regret that a shit ton but theres nothing to do now.

I think most times I just act really impulsively and say/do things that aren't really representative of myself. So now I don't talk much unless I have to lol. I don't think I've ever actually made that big of a mistake that it changed my life in a negative way. If anything most have become happy accidents. Live and learn, all the time.

I think we all understood that, but having a judgment free place to admit our mistakes is the point of the thread. If the thread was called complain about your current problems, then yeah the "handle your own problems" would apply. But this is a thread made for people to think about the past, admit their mistakes, and hopefully gain personal insight as to why they made those mistakes and how they learned from them.

Well hitting rock bottom allowed me to get my shit together and get on a better track. So my fuck up ended up restarting me.

Basically had some legal problems mid 20s had to move back in with my parents I had been gambling on sports professionally and doing well since I had been laid off from both my jobs 4 months earlier prior to the start of football season and I basically called in huge bets to bookies with money I didn't have and won and supported myself at the time my unemployment got delayed and I hadn't been paid for months but anyways yeah had some legal probems ended up losing BIG money and owing BIG money to scary people and I just moved back home with my parents and had to trade in sports betting for ticket scalping.


It worked out just sort of allowed myself to hit rock bottom collect some unemployment from my moms basement remove some pressure and resposibilities I couldn't drive or anything but I didn't no longer have a big expensive truck and apartment to pay for and yeah focused on starting my new ticket business. Ya know the turnaround wasn't that long within months I was going to Vancouver for Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 to see my team win and was skiing more than I had in years and living in the casinos in Tahoe started betting again and winning and doing well.

I thought I was on top of the world though that football season I made bank and more than I had working 60 hrs a week and I didn't live at home I had a nice apartment with friends and was going out and having fun and shit. I took my gambling seriously I had 4 tvs set up in the living room and immersed myself in the games. BUt before you knew it I had a bad case to beat and owed a years salary to bookies because of 2 fucking bad weeks.



Its OK to hit rock bottom just pick yourself up and focus on getting your paper on.

My biggest fuck up was probably not realizing how important your freshman year grades are when it comes time for recruiting for internships, etc. Still managed to land my dream internship, which led to a job offer, but having a lower gpa (3.5ish) did not help when it came to interviewing (when the average gpa is around 3.7-3.8 for said job).

Basically, take advantage of the easier classes freshman and sophomore year of college, they will pad your gpa and take some weight off the harder classes when you're an upperclassmen.

Some pretty reckless drug usage when I was young.

Ditching out on a place where I had a good opportunity because I was young and didn't understand "the game" and workplace politics. Idk, cared too much about my job to deal with a doucher that was fucking everything up, and missed out on fast tracking into some skills that would take me years to get another opportunity for.

I could say reckless skiing and snowboarding but that's worthwhile for me. Even though it fucked me up.

Not taking better opportunities because I was semi locked into another job. I've learned now that within reason if something better comes along, and you aren't attached to or their are problems where you're at, fucking send it son.

That said I'm pretty happy with where I've gotten. Made it way farther than I thought I would, saved up a bit, and carved out a modest "career" path. I'm definitely not always happy, but I can't really complain about where I'm at.

I didn't fuck up, but I've wanted to start a rail building business for a while and it's been getting put on hold because of resort work and travels. But hopefully this spring or next fall I get a window where I can hammer out some stuff. Even if I don't sell much of it, it'd be therapeutic as fuck for me. If I don't do it ever then I'll be fucking up though.

Also wanting to do one of the long hikes. Multi week, preferably multi month ones. AT is pretty much out for me with all the hype and all the traffic, but want to do one of them or even a large section of something.

Had a chance to buy a 69 Camaro for $4,300 a while back. It would have made an awesome race car with not much work and would have given me something cheap to run to go to the track with during college.

I made lots of bad decisions as a kid, but I believed the world was coming to an end if I fucked up. Throughout life so far, Most decisions were right. Finished school, got a good job and ski everyday.

My greatest fuck up was letting a burn out turn into a full blown depression that took years of happiness away. Still fighting this today; the only things that motivates me is not losing my apartment, biking and most importantly skiing.

Things went down hill from there in the form of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Woke up one day and came to the realization that I was a pice of shit. Started doing yoga and meditation and all that junk. Now I don't hate myself as much. For real tho, fuck that guy.

I was going to be an athletic trainer, then I bailed on that because the program sucked. Now I am Forestry Management. My girlfriend of 5 years is also transferring to my school (her own decision) for Wildlife Ecology and want to live together but I dont know if forestry is for me. What if I need to change schools? I dont want to just bail on her like that.

Didn't try for shit in HS...got horrible grades and went to a horrible college with no plan. Ended moving to CC and then to another school which was much much better. Have an awesome job now and do very well.

But essentially wasted my college years working 24/7 / taking 6 classes a semester in order to keep up and make up the ground work from my HS disaster. Well worth it looking back

Out of highschool I went away to University, but didnt have the self discipline to manage my life and pass classes, so I wasted a ton of money and felt like a huge piece of shit. Went to community college here and there, didnt really give a shit until I got a job where I could see the difference a college degree makes. So now I am back at it, taking classes online, trying to do what I should've done a long time ago.

Its painful how fucking relatable this is.

Freshman year, Highschool seemed so hard at a private school. They made you work your ass off (for what I was used to) and made kids have a great work ethic although I was still a little behind.

best thing out of freshman year: work ethic

Transfer to a public school and take the hardest classes I can. I fuck off and procrastinate and just scrape by in all of these classes. Depression set in for a lot of that year and ran into Junior year and dealing bud and smoking way too much wasn't helping with time management

Best thing out of Sophomore year: nothing

Junior year I overload my classes and fucked myself up with AP and Honors and sports and skiing with no motivation to do shit. Got arrested, stopped with pot, and tried to get out of depression which is honestly the reason why I probably passed all those classes even though I failed my math class.

Best thing out of Junior year: got 3/5s on all my AP tests which I was hyped about even though they are only a little above average/ getting arrested forced me to get my shit together/ snagged a solid 10 for a gf that keeps me away from depression

Senior now, and I can say that I planned on killing this year but my bad habits are seriously fucking me up. Im taking average classes aside from a few AP classes and trying to get on the grind, but Im still fucking around just as much as I normally do, with higher grades since the classes are easier.

So far best thing for senior year: Finally have a license, Im gona make sure I get a better score on my SAT's

HS GPA is hovering around 2.8.
SAT is ~1600 but im taking it again on the 23rd

Worst part of this whole thing is that sophomore year I found out I get to go to college for free if I qualify (tuition exchange program), which is why I took all these classes. Now, my parents think im not going to get into any colleges and that Im gona be a dropout if I ever go and stuff.

Looking back at what I've accomplished here feels like they are right...

Yeah its tough for me, I really dont have much work ethic and I kinda hate it. My first half of high school was just me not really caring and just kinda doing the bare minimum and not asking questions or taking advantage of the help I have. But last year and into this year I kinda started to just say fuck it and ask questions and stopped caring about what people in class thought of me since they already know Im not book smart, Im street smart at least. But Im still doing enough just to get by but Im kinda working towards raising my 2.17 gpa up to about a 2.4-2.5 by the end of the year. I havent taken the SAT or ACT and my parents dont seem to be worried. They know Im gonna work during my gap year and that Im probably going to community college and will eventually work in a trade job, which is fine, I dont want kids or a fancy house, I just want 1 or 2 cool cars and then money for ski shit. So Im taking 3 legit classes, my other 2 are support classes and 2 free periods. Some of my friends are in mostly AP classes and are way to stressed out, I just cant see myself happier than I am now when I have double the work in and out of class. I just need to focus on passing my classes and mostly passing my senior project at the end of the year.

Ive just been living life mostly off what makes me happy than what gets me stressed, but Im gonna adjust it a bit and stress a little more to get my school shit together. I just hope I can prove people who doubted me wrong in the future, not because Ill have hundreds of thousands of dollars but because Im not the shitty person they think I will become.

i ignored all the warning signs of knee problems for a year before i finally went to a surgeon. i ended up needing 10k (with insurance) worth of surgery, 4.5 months on crutches, 3 surgeries (1 on left knee and 2 on right), a missed ski season, shitloads of pt, and aprox. a year of limited physical activity. im still not fully recovered. I literally had a loose peice of cartilage floating around in my knee and occasionally popping out and forming a bump in my skin that i could push back in and i still ignored it.
