Whats your favorite ski film of all time and why?

For me, Refresh by Level 1 takes the cake.

That movie is a masterpiece. The sound track is all time, every single song in that movie immediately reminds me of skiing when I hear it.

The riding is before its time and the movie is chock full of the most stylish skiers to ever to do it. Plus level 1 killed it behind the lens.

But the movie just puts off such an awesome vibe. Just makes me happy and stoked on skiing..every single time I watch it. I can never get enough.

So NS, whats your favorite ski movie of all time and why? What makes it so different and special?

Probably Turbo or Idea. Two of my first ski films.




That being said Rainville's opener in Turbo changed my life. It's a perfect segment. They way he opens with that mini-golf to cork 3 is just amazing.

I'd have to say that finito is my favorite movie. There were so many tricks that I never would have even thought to be possible in that movie, and it had such a dope vibe to it.

I 100% agree with you OP. Refresh is my favorite ski film of all time. Every skier's part were entertaining and inspiring, especially Phil Casabon's. The movie also feels authentic with Warren Miller narrating.

Teddy Bear Crisis - its one of those movies you watched when you were a little kid and were all like "damn, I want to ski like that." I was hooked the first time I saw it.


After the sky falls - its just a beautifully put together film. it just makes you think about how awesome it is lapping deep pow with your buddies and seeing cool shit with them.

I'm gonna go with Eye Trip and Revolver, both were pretty ahead of their time and would be sick even if they came out today, then again that'd be true about most films

I spent about half a decade living at Squaw during and after college and before grad school. I absolutely loved my time there. My favorite movie is 1999, by Scott Gaffney. It stars primarily Rob Gaffney and Shane McConkey. They absolutely destroy Squaw and the Tahoe backcountry. I lived in Tahoe during the 98/99 season and skied Squaw almost every day. I love watching this movie and reliving those days. Squaw's inbounds terrain is nuts, and this movie does a great job of showcasing it. I would say the level of skiing is as high as any ski movie I have ever seen. There are plenty of movies I love, but 1999 will always be the best. When you watch this movie you wonder why every film needs to be about AK when there is so much sick inbounds terrain at Squaw. I'm kidding in a way, obviously AK spine walls are on another level. But watching McConkey and Gaffney billygoat, straightline and huck Squaw makes me wonder why we never see inbounds segments again. They allowed the guys early ups a couple of times to nail Eagle's Nest and the Fingers. I would like to see some inbounds footage of Squaw in movies again.

Idea - Big smooth tricks and riding with pals. The "Idea" was fresh for ski movies and got me stoked. After the Sky Falls did the same thing when I saw it too.

Teddybear Crisis - Big gap jumps and a killer soundtrack right as I was getting into park skiing

Hot Lunch (thanks for whoever reminded me about it up there^) - What's not to like about a spring road trip on the west coast shredding inbounds terrain anyone could relate to?

War - First PBP movie I saw, and it was always easy to get excited about skiing watching those guys.


Since those days I have been getting more excited about edits I guess. Big ski movies feel too polished and unrelatable and the small ones feel like they have too much filler.

Sunny: Stacked crew of riders with a great vibe and some amazing shots/segments.

Mutiny: The Mona Lisa of urban skiing. Not to mention many of the burliest urban shots ever filmed are in there.

Work it out: Great vibe + skiing. Traveling circus-y feel to it. Probably cause a lot of their guys are in it.

So well done! Felt like I was there with them in many of the shots because of how they conveyed them! And the video segments were soo overwhelming! Everything about it was outstanding! Doesn't show as much of the dark side of urban as something like mutiny does but it feels so much more authentic. You see their thought processes when hitting a feature and their emotions too.

Also Clayton Vila's analogy between urban skiing and building houses was soo on point. It made me stop the movie and say damn! Like I've watched so much of stepts stuff and I could never give a straight answer to why they would keep hurting themselves and why they did urban skiing until now. I know I'm going on a pointless rant but that whole dialogue just blew me away. Always could understand it but could never put it in words and so eloquently!

+1 for All.I.Can. The soundrack is so legit and JP Auclair's streetskiing segment is so legendary no matter how many times you've seen it.

Level 1's Sunny - because IMO this is the best Level 1 film, ik its not the most popular opinion but the movie just clicked for me. the music is amazing all of the segments are sick not to mention Parker and Chris have some of the better parts i've ever watched. I just get so stoked every time I watch it. I have always loved skiing more than anything else, but I think Sunny sparked my unrelenting addiction

Teton Gravity's Almost Ablaze - because it's the only other movie to get me as hyped as Sunny on skiing, it's another one that just clicked. I very rarely ski park so the nonstop big mountain craziness got me hyped, the music is awesome and it highlights what I love above the sport, the adrenalin pumping fun.

Runners up:
My dad and I used to watch Warren Miller's Playground all the time so that will always be special

Level 1's refresh - because obv

Teton Gravity's One for the road - because of how it is laid out, I love the editing choices not to mention the skiing is insane

Sherpas Cinema's All I Can - because it's just a beautiful spectacle to watch

The Trip - team 13 productions. fucking classic old masterpiece that not many people have watched i feel.

And of course teddy bear crisis , for many obvious reasons . fucking loved it and still watch it quite a bit.

Session 1242 - the movie that brought some insane style to the game. ( pep and tanner especially )

W ski 106 - one of the best movies because of the balance of park and powder , variety of riders, and it also had some unique editing witch i feel helped influence many ski movies that have been put out after w ski.

this list is in no order because they all are #1 in my book etc. and picking one as my favorite is something i can't do , cause they are all special in my book for different reasons. etc.
