That's a possible counterargument... but the best part about this is that you don't even have to be able to describe or admit to the existence of that than which nothing greater can be conceived... you just have to be able to grasp the concept, and you've proven its existence.

I belive god as a collective conscience, and that after people die they do what they think their supposed to do, but religions like christianity really get me irked because they use hell as a way to try and make you belive in something and that is way fucked up, you shouldnt belive in something because of the fear of what will happen if you dont.

there is no way to ever prove god exists or doesnt exist, unless all human beings witness the same thing at the same time together (how redundant heheh) And who evers friends trying to prove it with math, thats bs too, math was created by man, math is nothing but theories and shit, i mean ya 1 + 1 = 2 but someone just made up one and one having a value of two, not like its science that can be proven, but still with that, science is just man made shit too, we just use science to manipulate something to get a desired affect

How people use the bible as like a set of morals i dont understand, so good and bad is only representation of somones opinion, we all think stealing is bad because thats what we have been taught, stealing may be a good thing, all order of good and bad is so subjective, the bible cant be guidlines, another man wrote it, so it has Gods word in it, or some guys representation of what he thought god said to him.

DrGonzo you say christians use hell as a way to scare people into christianity. That is just like a doctor telling some one that they need to take chemo or the cancer will kill them. I don't want to force anyone into believing my religion i just want you to see my points and then you can choose what to think. When you really think about it our existance here on earth is so small compared to the eternity that we will spend in heaven/hell. It baffels me to think of spending forever in such a wonderful place where there is always fresh powder and the lines are allways perfect. That is what helps me when ever i face sin. And i am positive there is not going to be any snow in hell!!! Just something to think about.

My gosh this was an entertaining read. Thanks almostaskier and JD for some mind baffling babble. I can make up some contradicting philosophical musings too. Would you listen? No. Religion forces people to tie things in. Just like Astology. Religous people have this need to place control of thier lives in someting else something 'greater' so that if something happens, its not thier fault. 'I failed that test, oh well, it was gods plan for me.' or you could have STUDIED.
Religon allows people to relax, their life is not entirely in thier hands anymore. But that can be a good thing. Some people need that. Religon can do great things, it can bond people, bring them together and provide hope to the masses. But, it can mislead and provide misguided hope. How do you explain that religon rates are higher in lower educated countries?
I am certainly at a conflict, as I believe that people should be allowed to believe what they want, cause they should be able to make thier own decisions and choices, but if I were to believe that they should be allowed to believe in religon, they are not believing whatever they want and making thier own decisions. Thier religon is deciding and guiding them for them...does that make sense? And I also believe people should believe in the truth.

Conclusion - Religon can do good things, God only exists in the mind, believe what you want to, and thats the beauty of choice. As long as you CHOSE to believe in god, and were not forced/guided into it. Its okay.
Sorry about the randomness of this rant.

I'm just saying, there are more and better philosophical supports for the existence of god than proofs of his non-existence... and if you can A) disprove that argument or B) Come up with a better one to the contrary, as you say you can, then back that up. Let's see it.

thank you for reminding me about my freedom of choice and thought, religion took that away, wow my life has changed... entertaining babble? wow, a new check mark on my list... to me, everyone likes to say 'religion is bad, you lose your freedom of choice' and all that mindless blabber, but, do you ever wonder about your own existence? i mean, forget God a minute, do you ever wonder?
once you do, you will realise either: that you accept being a cosmic accident, with no reason for being here today, and a slave to the following equation: time+chance+nothing= everything, which alot of people believe, and that is well within their right to do so; or you realise that there may be something else, that you might have a reason to exist and that you don't want to believe that there is no reason for you to be here right now, and from then on, people look for an answer, and that a belief in a God gives that answer.
so you can choose to believe whatever you want, its your right, but it is ours too, and excuse us if we don't want to sit there and not express what we believe in while you get to...

I can't comprehend the idea that the entire universe as we know it is some giant mistake. I believe that there is a higher power who created the physical laws of the universe. If there was a big bang, there was something before it. That is where God comes in. Oh, and I have never understood how someone could stand on top of a mountain and look out over an amazing landscape and think that it was all a mistake, that ythey and everything that they see happened by chance-no way.

^FYI, none of those arguments hold water at all... not sure if you expected them to, but hey, just sayin' is all.

^^Yeah no prob- it was more personal than anything else. It stems from the 2 ideas- 1) that I believe there are things that humans can't understand and 2) that I beleive that God or a higher power whatever you want to call it simply 'is'. That he simply exists- that he is in everything- that he is there beyond the limitations of time and space.

very thought provoking thread, props to everyone, lots of good ideas. my two cents:

first, on free will: if we all have the power to do what we want in this world, what power does god have anymore? i believe something must have created life and the universe to start it all, but isn't that the point of free will, that God cannot control or change our lives since he gave that power to us?

and on JD's 'greatest thing possible' philosophy. after quite a bit of thought, im convinced that this is just a manipulation of words and logic that is clever but doesn't quite pan out.

while it would be greater if the greatest thing possible was actually real, we don't know if it does or not. therefore we can only say that its possible. if its not real, then it would no longer fall under the category of possible, it would be the 'greatest thing impossible.' as humans, we can conceive ideas in our heads we know are impossible. if something is possible, that means it may or not exist. JD (or the person who said the quote) is basically saying that if something is possible, then it must be in fact real. if it were 100% real, we wouldn't say it was possible, we would say it was real. i know the initial thing was confusing, so i hope this isn't too confusing of a counterarg.

bottom line of all of this: we don't know, you can't prove god's existance or his non-existance, if you could, we wouldn't be talking about this.

Because I have been on the brink of death 5 times now. How about that? Also his awesome power of healing. I have been to many healing services to help me into remission, which as the doctors say I am on my way to. Pretty great, huh? I need to talk to the 'big man' up there more often...I have been selfishly neglecting him.
