Mr.BishopThis is our #1 goal going forwards. We had some issues with sticker distribution for a few years, but we are almost ready to ramp up a crazy amount of distro going forwards.

We just got a brand new cutter at the office, and we've been pretty hard in production mode. The Tell A Friend Tour has a ton with them, and we're going to have a super easy way for you guys to get as many as you want.

There is no such thing as a "Typical NSer" anymore. The 15 year old skittle kids who were here at the start are now 32 and into totally different shit. We have people from all walks of skiing life hanging around the site.

In my mind there is one thing that makes a Newschool skier - Its someone who grew up with the idea that the mountain is a playground. Much more like a snowboarder than a Deer Valley ski magazine reading carver. Not stiff, knows how to have a good time, loves skiing, not afraid of the park, and does tricks here and there as they ride the whole mountain.

With that said i do not spin as much as i used to but im still getting after it. Knees are feeling a little bit tired but overall im still having fun and thats all that matters!

TODAY its all about:
be 12, only buy full tilts, never learn how to properly ski on the mountain outside the park, no poles, tall tee, attitude, oh.. and hike the same flat box for hours.

use to be just be stoked to ski, lap the full park and not just a rail or box. plenty of high fives..

I have NS stickers all over the place. It definitely increases the amount of people that you meet at the mountain. I also wear Bloom and ride ON3P's.... NS'ers are probably 90% of the market for those brands. Goggles under helmet, Neutral colors, excessively loud music, Ollie everything, pee in butts.

I even use my base layer 7+ days in a row before I wash it. The putrid body odor smell is how I attract mates.

Base layer at 7 days is mellow. I used to wash mine once, maybe twice a season. :)

Everyone comes, everyone pretends like they don't. I think the biggest problem came from the few years that we really get NSG get super out of control. There was a few people in their late 20's acting like total fucking morons (pretending to be 12) and it soured a lot of people.

They're gone now, we've got the good OGs and a wicked new crop in the system. Plus now that everyone is older we can shred and party.

Shows a lack of respect for such a great sport that has been such a major part of my life. But that is the exact attitude that led so many people to migrate to snowboarding.... skiing has this elitist attitude where if you aren't the absolute best skier on the mountain - you don't even deserve to be there.

Let those kids ride however they want to ride. Let them fall in love with the sport, as I guarantee you one day they will learn that there's so many wonderful elements to explore.

We can't be such dicks to people who are enjoying it in a different way than we are.

At the still relatively young age of 25, I've come to realize that who cares how anyone else skis or what they're wearing. We're all out there having fun in our own way, which is all that matters.

I hear you Bishop. I didn't mean to sound like a dick or say that if a person lacks the fundamental know how of how to ski properly that they shouldn't even partake in it. Learning is part of the fun and that takes place in a different way for everyone on the mountain. I just wish that people would take the time to truly become the best all around skier they can be instead of jumping into a specific niche in skiing that can only benefit from developing the proper fundamentals at a basic level. I love seeing skiers of every ability on the mountain just for the sake of how much I love to ski and how enjoyable it is and hope for continued growth and prosperity in our sport. I think the key though is adding a time element to your thoughts. Just because someone is a park rat right now, doesn't mean that over the next 10 or 20 years they won't develop those fundamentals.

I just think we should have a lot more hope. Developing a love for skiing is the #1 most important thing, because its what gets you through all the hurdles you need to jump in order to actually do this sport. I mean think about it from someone who is only meh about it:

-Expensive Equipment
-Mind blowingly expensive tickets
-Freezing fucking cold
-Huge risk of injury/death
-Long drives to even get where you need to ride
-Huge lift lines
-etc.

If you end that list with "Oh, and now BTW you need to perfect your technique before you're allowed to have any fun or gain any sort of respect from the rest of us." then you end up with the reason its so hard to get new people in there.

If we embrace each gaper, each park rat, each person falling while walking out of the lodge on rental equipment - we greatly enhance the chances of their being more people and more money in our sport.

The elitist attitude just kills me. I feel its a cancer in the snowsports industry that needs to get cut out. Every time an experienced backcountry skier who has been living in the mountains since birth cuts down an east coast park rat, I feel that we lose 10 skiers who give up before they started. That's an exaggeration for sure - but those midwest kids riding backseat on 200' super shitty mountains are an important part of our future.

I don't think there's a story that so perfectly reflects what I'm talking about. Fell in love as a park rat on a 100' shitty hill, and bam few years later big backcountry guy.

You're definitely right and cultivating an interest in the sport and having the younger population fall in love with it is important. Time is certainly a factor I was overlooking in regards to where the younger skiers of today will be in the future (perhaps as a product of recent interactions I've had with some younger generation skiers; which obviously isn't a representation of newer skiers as a whole). Of course perfect form doesn't happen as soon as you strap on skis and that shouldn't limit someone from skiing the way that is most fun for them. Everyone can and should ski however they see fit, I just personally always wanted to become the best skier I could, for myself. Thanks for the link to the Brody Leven article! I remember in my earlier days going to Mt. Snow and seeing him in a rail jam and how sick everyone was throwing down; serious nostalgia reading that article as I haven't heard his name in a long time but can specifically remember him from the jam.

It also doesn't mean those kids won't change as they age. As you get older its really easy to say "Kids these days are so stupid.... when I was their age we were different." This is a common problem with Adults, and one I face as well as see many of my fellow adults fall into.

Its simply not true. Most of us were dumb when we were kids, so were our parents, so were their parents and so have kids been since the beginning of time. However, kids push boundaries and re-define the future... often ending up better than the generation before.

Think about it this way - If you're watching a sick big mountain segment, are you stoked if the guy hits a cliff and just rolls the windows down or can only chuck a frontflip to hot tub?

Or would it be sick if that guy doing the alaska peak stomped the fuck out of a sw cork 7 off of a cliff?

Without a strong park background, you're not going to be able to do the big tricks mixed in with a sick line. Sander Hadley, Eric Pollard, Andy Mahre, Tanner Hall, Pep Fujas, Chris Benchetler and many others all have a strong park background. It may not be exclusive - but they spent a ton of time in there. This is why they can do tricks in the middle of lines. You don't learn that shit on cliffs.

Snowboarding doesn't hate kids for riding the park. Its a part of their sport. It needs to be a part of our sport, or we're going to see all pros go back to the Hugo Harrison / Scott Schmidt days. I mean those guys are sick AF which is dope in its own right - but why not have a future where skiing has a trick element as well as super technical steep stuff?

I never thought very highly of skiing in the Midwest, but after taking a trip out west, I realized that skiing kickers all day back home made me adapt to the big-mountain thing very quickly.
