When should I worry about base damage?

I had a rough day at the hill and couldn't stay away from the rocks. I have some minor edge damage underfoot and several long (7+ inch) shallow scratches/gouges that travel down the skis. No core shots, just scuffed up the outer layer of the bases.
I'm just curious when people should start worrying about scratches and the effects on performance. I know core shots should be addressed immediately, but can the shallow scratches and scuff marks cause a loss of performance?
Kind of a dumb question, but I just want to know in what situation a base grind is necessary, or when p-tex should be used. Thanks in advance.

Really if you find shallow scratches it doesn't take much time to fill it with ptex. They cost maybe 5 dollars for a few ptex candles and they keep your base in good shape.

For pow you wont notice a difference really. You will start to notice it on traverses where you are relying on momentum to keep you going.
