The cliché camera thread

so i have a experience with a gopro and I'm an AV tech, but for cameras I don't even know where to start. I'd like one that can take photos and video, but it doesn't have to be simultaneous. being able to hand it off to a friend would help too. Budget is $600, but id be willing to go up to $650 or so. Again, not a ton of experience, so i dont have any gear.
