Should I try a GoPro or No?

A generous person bought me a GoPro camera and I know nothing about it. When they gave it to me they told me they bought it at Costco so I can return it. It would probably make them happier if I could make them a movie instead of just buying more coffee and groceries. I just don't know if this is something I can really use or not.
I don't own my own computer or smart phone and I really don't think I will have time to mess with the camera when I am at work.
Given my limited access to other technology does it make any sense for me to own the GoPro?

The person that gave it to me has been a programmer for a long time and I think they probably realized this as I was opening it. My brother got me a bag of accessory mounts and things to go with it though so it is a bummer I won't be able to use his gift either. I already feel bad because when I opened his gift he was all excited and I had no I idea what it was and he had to explain it to me and then I was like "oh yeah I did get a GoPro this morning!" but I don't think I did a good job being excited.

I might have to do that eventually just to take care of essential business. For now the cost of buying a new computer seems a little too high if I am buying it just to mess around with a toy camera. For the most part owning my own computer seems pointless unless I also get internet service. The cost of the service is like $400/year and I don't know if that is even that fast. When I owned computers in the past they didn't last that long and it was very frustrating.

Sure, but you don't need Internet. I use my contour camera almost exclusively for still photos or timelapse. It's better than using my phone. Once you cut it up on the computer you can just drop it onto your phone for posting or sending pic messages. $400 a year for Internet is less than I pay and my Internet maxes out at 1.5mps where I live in the cascades. I just feel like it was a gift from a friend and $400 bucks to return it isn't worth it. They are good cameras bud, try it out!

Do you have any recommendations for a computer that won't break the bank? I don't have a smart phone but if I had a laptop I could bring it in to work and use the wi fi to share photos. I've thought about getting a laptop to take on trips and stuff because the last place I stayed didn't even have a phone book but they had wi fi.

The person that gave me the camera is now offering to lend/give me their ipad mini. They say they have another ipad and are thinking about getting a 3rd one with more memory so they want me to try this ipad with the GoPro and then if I can just borrow it forever once they get their new one.
Seems like they really want me to take some pictures and make them a movie.
I guess I have to try it now. They even checked with Costco and said I can take the camera back if I can't figure it out with the ipad. But I only have 90 days from the day the bought the camera and I'm not sure how long since they bought the camera.
Has anyone used the GoPro with the Ipad mini? Feeling like a Neanderthal over here.

I'm too old for this tech stuff to be super intuitive. Also I just have a super generous techie in my life that likes me to stay in touch. I think this whole thing might have been designed to push me out of this low tech phase but it is super generous none the less and I want to play along if it is not too hard for me.

Go pro's are sick...use it a few times to make some cool edits. View it like this...you didn't pay for it. It has no value to you. Its just a gift. Accept it and move on and use it as you please. Yo can get a decent computer for not to much money these days if you really look hard.

Definitely return it if you don't have a computer. Without a computer it is very difficult to edit videos or even look at them. Use the money for coffee for sure

This. I found a Sony laptop that was like only a couple months old on Craigslist for like $400. Just keep checking your local buy and sell and before you pay money for it just make sure it turns on and everything works.

About a year ago my brother found the same laptop on a buy and sell for like $200.

Trade it in for a computer. It sounds like you wouldn't really enjoy the GoPro and you need a computer anyways. Now you have $400 towards a computer from Costco.

And if this person doesn't ski or anything that got you the GoPro just send them edits off the Internet or something.

This is what I've decided to do. Really it is way too generous of a gift not to accept it. Probably going to try it this weekend. Looks like I will be able to work the thing with the iPad mini and I will probably end up having fun with the iPad too. Seems like you can rig up a mic so maybe I can even film my band with it.

Gopros are great, you can use it with an ipad if you have the wifi gopro

My recommendation is that if you do get that iPad you can just use the GoPro app to transfer the content from your camera to your iPad. It dosnt require wifi. You just have to have a GoPro hero 3+ or better. You can get some pretty good editing apps on the AppStore. You will need Internet to download apps so go to a library or somthing. Some apps will cost money (I've seen up to 8 bucks) but they can be worth it. If I were you I would read some reviews before hand. Good luck OP!
