Boot fitters of NS, whats the strangest problem you've had with a boot fit and how did you solve it?

Been boot fitting for a few months now and had an elderly gentlemen come in with charcot foot (the metatarsals soften, arch collapses and end up fusing together leaving a large boney area on the inside of the foot)

note: it's a grim google search

ended up putting him in an APEX boot as it was the only one he could put on comfortably with a reverse arch foot bed to support it in the boot. (with help from tom on messenger, thanks!)

Curious as to other peoples stories, could help with sharing problems and solutions.

I had dalbellos last year and this year I have Salomon Quest Access 70. In both boots I have had some big arch pain. Does this mean I need costume foot bed? A doctor said a while ago that my feet drop in on the inside a lot.

Additionally, how do you want a boot to fit in the park? What are the pros to tight and pros to loose? Thanks!

My dad used to work at a ski shop in vail like 20 years ago and he said a Texan came into the shop saying his boots were hurting his feet and when he took them off he still had his sneakers on.

Is it the underside of your foot that is hurting? If you pronate (ankles/foot roll in) then yeah I'd recommend one. A custom footbed will solve a lot of problems in the boot, if it doesnt solve it at least it will put your foot in the correct position if you need to modify the boot around it.

The boot should feel snug without pain ideally, you don't want to be able to move your foot inside the boot. If it's too tight then your foot will probably go numb and reduce blood flow to your feet. If its too wide you wont get a quick respose trying to edge and if its too big then your shins will start hurting from your foot sliding back and forth in the boot.

Check the what's wrong with my boots thread in gear talk. But if you don't have a footbed I would reccommend.

You want your boot to fit like a glove. There are no pros to having a loose boot. Go to a bootfitter and he will set you up.

Fischer is making ski boots that both the liner and shell can be molded.

I'm interested to hear how a moldable shell will work. Theory sounds good.

Have you fit people for any of these?

fischer use the vacuum fit so we heat the boots up to about 80'c for 7 minutes then use ice packs and air compression to fit the shell

salomon do it as well they use kaprolene (sp?) which expands by about 6mm in the oven and then cools to fit the shape of your foot relieving pressure points.

sold way more salomon than fischer

they work but wont perform miracles, still got to have a decent shell check with your foot in them

any idea how good the SOLE moldable insoles are? I'm thinking about getting some footbeds (and have disliked my superfeet) but i'd rather snag some $40 moldable soles.

I have been nothing but happy with my sidas...I'm no help on SOLE though

Only used sidas custom ones so can't say anything about SOLE. Sidas have been great for me though

Vacuum fit is tight. My Ranger 12s fit very comfortably with my wide foot. However it lost some of that shape over the summer so now they suck again.
