How tf do I make natural rails?

I've got plenty of pvc but I want something new this year. I tried making a natural rail last year with a standard frame and then I screwed in a 12 ft section of a tree I had cut in half. I shaved off all the little Nasty bumps in it and then sanded it down. Hit it once, caught edge and I never went back to it. Anyone every made these natural features that can share some advice?

If you put some water on the rail/log and let it freeze it will be easier to slide.

One of the mountains I go to has strips of indoor/outdoor carpet on them for early season. I think they might even leave them on all year.
