I just wanted to have a thread where people who have already seen the film could actually discuss it, since we are keeping the hype thread spoiler free. Where do you think it will go from here as far as Rey's training with Luke, Kylo's path, and Fin's next move? Tons to discuss, I'm super excited for this trilogy.
JAHpowEh, I could've saved $5 and just watched A New Hope again.
It was fine but nothing spectacular.
Ren's a little bitch and Indy is gone. Why should I keep watching?
to see what badass shit luke's been up to for 30 years
to watch the probable rise of the sith and jedi
to see boba fett make his long awaited, glorious return to the universe
watch rogue one
potential han solo origin story
and to see if kylo ren can actually step into vader's shoes
recent theory I read seems to think that Ren actually went over to the darkside as a double agent kind of, to kill the sith from the inside following his training. catch is, he can only complete his training and become a sith by killing his father to gain the trust of snoke and complete his transition to the dark side. This explains why he looks so conflicted before he kills han, why he can't kill Rey, and even why he talks to vader's helmet saying he'll "finish what you started" (aka destroying the sith). Hell, how did he even get Vader's helmet? Luke would've had it following ROTJ, doubt he just gave it to Kylo as a going away present. It all could be part of an elaborate plan set forth by Luke and Kylo Ren
This movie gave us plenty of shit to ponder over the next 18 months, and Rogue One will be a solid story from the sounds of it in the meantime
My cousin who is one of the biggest star Wars fan since like 1999 has read all the books, and that's the one thing he couldn't explain to me he didn't know who he was either.
Since I already called Kylo Ren being Solo's kid a year ago...I guess Ill make another prediction.
As said by some, Rey is definitely related to Luke and may even be Rens sister/half sister.
Theres so much parody its crazy.
Anakin was alone on a desert planet and was taken away to eventually become a jedi.
Luke was alone on a desert planet and was taken away to eventually become a jedi.
Rey was alone on a desert planet and gets taken away to (logically assuming) eventually become a
Luke inhereted his fathers lightsaber.
Rey inhereted Lukes lightsaber.
Also, relating to maybe Ren, when Reys parent/parents left and she is crying, listen to the voice that talks to her. Oddly sounds similar to Rens voice with his mask on...

Obviously rey can use the force but i think finn can too. He is the first known stormtrooper to actually resist the brainwashing and escape. He learned how to use the guns on the tie fighter and the millennium falcon super easily. Maz gave him the lightsaber and told him to use it so she obviously thinks he has the ability to and he actually did pretty well with it. He killed a bunch of stormtroopers and actually held his own against kylo ren. People keep trying to compare the new trio (poe, finn, rey) to luke, han, and leia. ad even if you are going to compare them remember that leia can use the force too, just not as well as luke. I think it would be awesome if there could be two main characters learning how to use the force in the next two movies.
This is his biography according to the Star Wars wiki:
"San Tekka was a follower of the Church of the Force, an underground faith of loosely affiliated followers of Jedi ideals. He also knew the history of Leia Organa. He had dealings with the Resistance X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron and his droid BB-8 and kept a piece of the map to find Luke Skywalker. They were located by the First Order shortly after giving the map to Dameron, who hid it inside BB-8. San Tekka watched helplessly as he saw his hometown being burned down. Dameron was captured and BB-8 fled, while San Tekka was confronted by Kylo Ren, who killed him with his lightsaber after a short conversation in which he attempted to find the whereabouts of Poe Dameron, as well as San Tekka trying to reason with him because of Ren's family history."
I don't know if this has been talked about but I have a weird theory that smoke ( big hologram guy) is probably Darth Plagueis, if you remember from the original movies Palpatine played Anakin by promising stronger abilities that the dark side has to offer, Palpatine said that Darth Plagueis could cheat death with his powers so maybe Snoke who looks to be 1000 years old is Darth Plagueis? also i really enjoyed the movie but i feel the connection of luke to Rey is too obvious and the next movie will be a classic bait and switch, undoubtedly Rey is related to someone strong with the force but I don't believe it is Luke, maybe a granddaughter of Obi Wan? or related to another jedi?
has no one read any of the books?! I can see why disney made sure to "uncannonize" all of them. such a different story line. It was a poor move to sell to Disney. while I agree with most of what is being said ie beautifully made movie with vibrant characters I'm so outraged that Disney would stray so far from the story line set in place by dozens of authors who worked tirelessly with Lucas and the Lucas creative team over the course of decades. The republic falls to the rise of an empire and is subsequently defeated over the course of a couple decades by the new most powerful faction in the galaxy (the rebel alliance) and a few more decades later and there's just a new empire like group operating? And another death star? And as much as I'm not a fan of Lucas I agree with him that under all of the action star wars is about relationships especially between a father and son (his words not mine) and killing off han was a stunt. I loved everything about the movie except the story as well. Can't believe I'd ever say this but the books are much better imo. It's really just two different stories now, one group written by science fiction authors in conjunction with lucas, and another by disney...

plagueis was killed by palpatine (his pupil), in keeping with the rule of two. plagueis is also kinda technically annakin's father, making rey a potential descendant of a sith master.
Seriously! Who else noticed the hole with lukes/Anikins lightsaber? That thing was lost in episode V when vader cuts lukes hand off. The one luke built was green and only his. How did one that looked like lukes from ROTJ turn blue and end up in a random bar keeps basement? And still be connected to Anikin!!!! That ruined it for me.

code3O7Fuck i am sorry folks for the obnoxious post... Phone fucked up big time.
Okay thats true. Luke probably still has his green one. But that dosent explain how luke or maz got ahold of anikin's after luke lost it at cloud city.
I'm not sure I liked this one too much, but I think it will set up for some pretty sick movies in the future. Super excited to see where it goes. I just hope they put more time in to it. This one just seemed like they needed to "put something out" in a sense. Nothing really impressed me.
Rey is attractive and reminded me of Keira Knightly. I thought she was her little sister or something
Yeah, it was pretty much A New Hope 2, but with more holes when you think about it.
In IV the Empire has the Rebellion pinned down, but supposedly in VII the dark side is resurgent, and with Ren dead and the death star mk2 gone there really isn't much for the story to continue into, like there was with V.

Rens not dead...
And Disney already locked in for another 2 movies so im sure they have an overall plot figured out

Wait what exactly is the storyline in the books? I loved the movie but ya i have to agree that this plot was kinda lame by recycling the whole death star/ force running in the family kind of thing.

It wasn't Luke's saber from ROTJ, it was Anakin's that was given to Luke by Obi-Wan that somehow fell from Cloud City and found its way to Maz's bar.

Go read wookiepedia, is a whole wiki site dedicated to the canon and goes hundreds of years past episode 6.
Granite_StateGo read wookiepedia, is a whole wiki site dedicated to the canon and goes hundreds of years past episode 6.
Thanks for that, I was really into the comics as a kid but never got into the books.
So from the wookiepedia it says that the "Legacy of the Force" follows the original story line and jacen solo going to the dark side becoming darth caedus is that right? It seems like the force awakens could definitely take some points from the books and I hope it does rather than recycle the previous movies, the plots from the books seemed really interesting and I can see why people who read them would be displeased by the movie. I dunno I hope their is more to the plot than Rey just being related to Luke or Kylo and the movie is less predictable.
This is my theory about how Rey is so good with the force coupled with over things and how I would explain Reys powers etc, etc.
Luke Skywalker founded the Knights of Ren and trained Ben Solo and Rey and some other Jedi. However Ben Solo idolized Darth Vader so much and Snoke sensed this and persuaded him to the dark side of the force. Ben also managed to bring some other jedi with him to the dark side of the force and the Knights of Ren became the new sith. (There's no more rule of two). Due to this Ben wants to kill Rey because he knows how strong she is with the force but Luke never finished her training so she whiped her memory and put her on Jaku. That's why Rey can use Jedi mind tricks and use the force without no memory of training. She has been trained but she just can't remember. Sub consciously however, she can still use the force.
CraigskisRight from the original trilogy I always thought growing up that there was symbology between Stormtroopers, the Empire, and Nazi Germany. The speech scene with the high visual contrast & colourization of nazi imagery looked like a scene out of Sincity. I was actually surprised when they added the final coup de grâce of an uppercut further mimicking beyond any shadow of a doubt the reference to the nazi salute. I can understand the comparisons to a totalitarian dictatorship, the first order, and the antagonist relationship they are trying to create; I also can't help but wonder why such striking imagery was used.
Don't know if anyone knows this either, but all of the blasters are modeled after German weapons used during World War II. Most noticeable is the mg42
saskskierIf Rey is Luke's daughter, who is her mom? I imagine that will be explored to some extent as well.
I would assume Mara Jade while they're pulling slightly from the EU, but hard to say for sure. Read the wookapedia page on her if you're looking for a more, she has quite an intense and pertinent back story.

The expanded universe pretty much doesn't exist anymore so any references you can find from the EU won't really carry over to the movies now.
S.J.WThe expanded universe pretty much doesn't exist anymore so any references you can find from the EU won't really carry over to the movies now.
Disney has stated they will pull from the EU whenever they (and Lucas) see fit, so any of the origin stories for Rey in the EU are technically possible
How could rey be lukes daughter? Jedi are supposed to be selfless and not marry for it leads to attachment. Remember. "The fear of loss is a path to the dark side". If luke is the new leader of the jedi why would he make his fathers biggest mistake? Personally i think it would take away from the humble monk status of the jedi. Makes them more like the passionate sith.
I really thought that it was good until the end. The end was exactly like episode 4. The way they destroyed the death star and the way they destroyed the planet was to similar for my taste.

Dawg, the entire movie was exactly like episode 4.
Did anyone else think that the new Star Wars sucked?
Probably going to get a bunch of hate for this but the whole movie was super unoriginal and seemed like it was thrown together like the night before. I especially thought that fucking Han Solos son, or whatever his name was, was the worst actor I have ever seen

it was a giant nod of nostalgia to the originals, while creating space to become original in the following episodes. and he played his character exactly like he was supposed to. a young, whiny, and tormented soul

yep, they spent $200 million on a movie they threw together in one day.
it was very obviously supposed to be 1 part nostalgia, 1 part character introduction, and 1 part universe expansion
if you hated kylo ren then adam driver did his job
Alittle disappointed with the film. It felt to me more of a remake than a sequel.
This I didn't like.
1. Terrible villian
2. Don't understand how Rey and Finn were able to compete with Kylo when Kylo has had training and knows how to use the force.
3. Don't understand how Rey was able to learn the force so quickly without training when it took Luke so long to learn it with Yoda training him.
4. I think Poe (the pilot guy) should have had more of a role in this movie
5. The whole movie felt choppy
6. I don't get why everybody has to be someone's son and why the villian couldn't just be someone who was taken over by the dark side.
7. Too much like blowing up the death star with blowing up the first orders new planet
8. There weren't any awesome fight scenes
That said, loved the old character that were brought back and sad to see Hans go.

1. Why?
2. Kylo's training was incomplete, and he was just shot by Chewy's crazy strong laser crossbow
3. Remember in ESB, when Luke used the force to get his lightsaber on hoth? Same thing.
4. Fair enough
5. Why?
6. Because not everyone can use the force
7. Thats the point
8. BLASPHEMY! Kylo vs Rey > Obi Wan vs Vader (in A New Hope)
