I just wanted to have a thread where people who have already seen the film could actually discuss it, since we are keeping the hype thread spoiler free. Where do you think it will go from here as far as Rey's training with Luke, Kylo's path, and Fin's next move? Tons to discuss, I'm super excited for this trilogy.
I haven't watched ep 4-6 in a couple years so I need to catch up a bit, however, I was REALLY impressed with the movie. The plot was maybe a bit played out but the characters (especially Rey) were superb. I hope she stays a main figure in the squeals to come. There was also something about Hans Solo and Chewie's characters that brought to life the old films into the new. I think this movie ought to be remembered for the characters it introduced. Like I said, I thought the plot may have been a little played out at this point, however, it has brilliantly set the stage for the two movies to come.
Kylo Ren is the worst movie villian I've seen in a while for a few reasons:
1) With all his training, he gets his ass kicked by Rey (I understand she probably has some thing up with her family history, but she also has absolutely no training with a lightsaber)
2) He just looks like a little bitch. Like cmon, get a hair cut or bulk up.
3) He's crying everytime he takes off his helmet. I can kind of understand when he comfronts Han, but when he's interrogating Rey he has tears in his eyes as well.
Also how tf does Poe get off of that planet when they crash land?
Also if Finn was trained from birth to be a stormtrooper, how does he go from full commitment to full-blown traitor?

I think she's just OD strong with the force. I agree though. I laughed when Kylo took his helmet off. His voice is soft as fuck and he looks like a pussy.
No idea how Poe escaped, or why he just left Finn to die if he knew he was getting help.
I think Finn switched over because he saw his friend die.
Overall, dope as fuck. I enjoyed it more than the originals even. inb4 h8 m8. But I thought it was more engaging, there was better acting, and the effects obviously allowed for some really cool scenes. Kylo is also a more complex villain than any of the others.

Ren is mentally unstable which makes for a good villain, you never know what he is going to do. Also he didn't want to kill her he wants to train her.
Finn said his first battle was murder or something along those lines. He isn't down for that because he is a good guy. He saw how bad they are and he didn't think it was right.

Who gives a fuck?

That question was probably addressed during writing and was intentionally left vague. Maybe they will elaborate more in later films.
1) With all his training, he gets his ass kicked by Rey (I understand she probably has some thing up with her family history, but she also has absolutely no training with a lightsaber)
Well it was stated that his training wasn't finished in the film soooooooo..,
2) He just looks like a little bitch. Like cmon, get a hair cut or bulk up.
3) He's crying everytime he takes off his helmet. I can kind of understand when he comfronts Han, but when he's interrogating Rey he has tears in his eyes as well.
Both of these are what makes me like him as a character so much. Having an understanding of why his is what he is and how he emotionally feels about things gives me a deeper understanding of the characters. Contrary to popular belief, bad people have feeling to.
-With all his training, he gets his ass kicked by Rey (I understand she probably has some thing up with her family history, but she also has absolutely no training with a lightsaber
He had been shot by Chewy right? Was bleeding and all weak so couldnt fight his best? Also Rey is Lukes daughter so has all sorts of force powers running through her that probably helped, and she was sick with that staff thing she carried around so some skills probably translated over.
NewEscuelersBecause it seems a little fishy that the planet is monitored by the bad guys for anyone leaving and they missed the best pilot in the galaxy?
Still a lot more training then Rey. Who literally was holding it for the FIRST time sooooooooooo..
His training with that big hologram guy was supposed to void all of his feelings.
Kylo should've kept the helmet on the whole time...
I understand having an emotionally vulnerable/conflicted villain since I guess they're continuing the Anakin theme of pull from both sides of the force, but he looks like such a little tool.
He is also way too powerful to given in so easily to Rey. Like I get she's all about the force but she had never held a lightsaber before, yet he is a highly trained knight who is powerful enough to freeze a pistol blast in midair
Food for thought Rey is the product of an incest relationship ;)
but seriously i really enjoyed this movie, i laughed when they were doing the countdown till the big planet gun ate the sun and shot the other planet thing and they made the countdown so freaking long. also how did chewy survive.
I felt the same way about the lightsaber duel at first, but then I backtracked. I think that Luke mainly trained Kylo with the Force, and not really the saber. He never constructed a proper one which is why his is very chaotic and frayed at the ends. The point for Kylo is that he IS young, foolish, boyish, and uncontrollably angry. With all of this evidence it leaves a little credence to Rey being able to beat him. I still balked, but I can swallow it I guess.
JustGoWithItThe plot was maybe a bit played out .[/QUOTEThis was my biggest gripe: seriously, are we really blowing up another Death Star? This needs to sooo be put to rest.
That aside, I thought it was really well done. As many of you are are also saying, "how could Rey stand a chance against Kylo in a light sabre dual?" Even though she is trained in fighting (as proved earlier in the film), and she is somehow strongly linked to the Force, she has not trained with a light sabre before, never even held one until 3 hours ago... This was a bit of a stretch for me, but I'll go with it. After all, if these are my least liked things, we're off to a great start.

It's Star Wars, internal conflict is the name of the game. Vader had it, Luke had it, now Ren has it.
Also, he'd been shot in he stomach with a blaster by Chewy a few minutes before fighting Rey. He probably wasn't in tip top shape.
Yeah, I missed Poe's 5 second explanation for how he'd survived, wasn't sure about that either.
The Finn thing was my biggest question, too. These kids have been stolen from their parents as babies and brainwashed their entire lives to be killing machines (also, for any Game of Thrones fans, this sounds a lot like the Unsullied, huh?) and all that is undone for Finn within the first, like, 5 minutes of his first battle? Hopefully we'll get more back story there.
Overall I thought it was really good. The first few minutes had me worried because it seemed like it was just going to be a comedy that lacked the epicness of episodes 4-6 that made Star Wars great in the first place, but it picked up as the movie went along.
This was obviously pretty much a copy of episode 4, plot wise. Very curious if it continues in this direction and if 7-9 will be essentially structured the same as 4-6, or if we'll have some twists coming in the future.
And yes, seems pretty obvious that Ren is related to Luke and Leia in some way.
The "awakening" refers to many people discovering latent Force sensitivity en masse. Soon there will be a Sith Empire and a new Jedi Order, and episodes 10-12 will focus on their war.

Children slave armies are a part of history , game of thrones didn't make that shit up. Get some education you fool.
Alright I just watched it and actually found it really entertaining despite a major issue... the story!
Don't get me wrong the story was really fun to watch, it was very high intensity, great to discover new characters, great to see old characters again and fall back into the universe again!
My problem with the story is that it was basically every other movie crammed into one.
- A character who is faced with the decision of leaving her planet.. like Anakin
- She discovers that she has the force and has to learn to deal with her powers like Luke.
-Everyone running after a droid that has a secret message, like R2D2
-The vilan of the film is conflicted between the good and the dark side like Anikan
- The vilan must prove he is worthy by killing his father... instead of Darth Vader having to kill his son
-The rebels need to destroy a big planet destroyer like the Death Star. Just when it looks like at least they are going to destroy it in a more orriginal way, NOPE gotta drive in there and shoot shit up.
-The captured "princess" scene is repeated where Rey the new damsel in distress is captured and helled hostage by Ren. Sure it is a good way to reveal her powers of the force but its all too similar to the boys going to save princess Lea from Darth Vader.
-Finaly the movie ends with a concept identical to luke getting training from the mystical Yoda.
I'm sure I forgot to mention a few more MAJOR plot lines that were just reused to make this film. I think they focused too hard on doing a reboot that would give people nostalgia boners that they failed to make a truly orriginal film.
I'm not just going to bitch and moan, honnestly Abrams did an AWESOME job at directing this film! The actors delivered such great performances, the sets and style of the film had so much richness of detail and grit. And what to say about the special effects! That nice sketchy touch to Ren's light saber, real explosions and those insane flying scenes helped by the 3D! That intro card was absolutely spectacular when it came on, it felt like it was originally made to be in 3D!
As a whole I was still very entertained and this movie even succeed in making me, a grown ass man, teary eyed! I still loved this experience and will probably go see it again. It's just a shame that the worst part of the film was the story!

*sigh* once again NS reveals it's inability to read accurately. Please show me where I said Game of Thrones made it up.
All I was trying to do was point out the similarity, and note that the story Finn told about how Storm Troopers are raised/created reminded me of that of the Unsullied.

Sigh once again someone gets called out for saying something stupid then blames the other person. The way your worded it was clearly saying that they stole the idea from got.

Did anyone else feel like Finn got out of character a couple of times? And he didn't feel like someone who were raised to be a soldier in a fascist state. Other than that and the whole Deathstar 3.0 thing I really enjoyed the movie. Good characters and villain. Loved how impactful the actionscenes were. Surprisingly funny too.
Had a long conversation with my dad about the story. I hope that now jj Abrams has given us the nostalgia boner, the next one will take a more original plot line and not be such a replica of the originals. That is my only gripe about it though, it was a beautiful film that had the gritty feel of the original trilogy and I am super stoked to see more development of the new characters.
Also that opening scene where the star destroyer flies in front of the planet eventually blacking it out? Chills. I knew right then that this movie would be so much better than the prequels.
Am I onlt the one who thought rey was awful? Her line delivery was to be frank pretty piss poor through most of the film. I like her as a character, but as an actor she was shocking.
I'm excited to see more of this original Jedi temple that Luke supposedly found. Also excited to see where Dameron and Fin go to on their journeys. Curious how they'll get rid of Luke too.
Only worry is the director they've chosen. Not sure how he'll do, and they have Kinberg writing with Kasdan. As long as Kasdan has the most say in the script I'll be fine with it. Kinberg just isn't right for star wars in my opinion.

This is why I liked this movie so much. It basically sent me back to when i watched the originals. I especially liked the part where Han Solo said a joke about trash compactors and garbage from the 5(?) movie.

Does this place have any trash compactors?
Finn gets really excited since he was janitor on the station "oh yah!" haha yah that was a great moment!
I feel like you would have had that same nostalgia factor if they had gone with a more original plot since nostalgia was implemented in every element of the film. It would have been nice to at least have a different central conflict than the other films.
i thought the movie was great. yeah i had a few gripes, (han solo's death and the starkiller should have been a bigger deal, some of the humor felt forced, and the plot was dead on ep. IV) but, like it has already been stated, this had to happen to please fans. now the series can continue in its own original way.
I also think that that rey is going to be related to someone unexpected. its too obvious that she is related to the skywalker's somehow.
I feel like the movie was just a lot of character development and throwbacks to the original movies so previous fans would be pleased, and it was still such a great movie. I wonder if people who have never seen a star wars film would be as stoked tho.
Next movie definitely needs more jedi type shit and light saber fights and a different ending then just an x-wing pilot destroying a massive planetary death weapon thingy.
Either way im still on the hype train and plan to see it again next week. Daisy Ridley is my new celeb crush for sure.
Anyone think that kylo renn was kind of a lame villain tho? I want some new crazy sith lords or villains like general grievous, I dunno next movie will be rad as fuck tho.

I think he was kind of lame without the mask, but that is on purpose and so I have no issues. We are seeing a villain form, rather than getting a complete baddie like Vader was in the original trilogy. He'll probably get more badass as the story progresses. He had to be a little lame for us to buy in that he doesn't quite know what he's doing.
I feel like at the end they ran out of money, I don't know what was going on with that editing, when she was walking up the stairs and that weird blurry airshot.

Tru.
I just hope he isn't the only villain. like when darth vader was a villain there was also darth sidious. I'm sure they'll make snoke the head baddie but I dunno he didn't seem that badass to me either. W/e I'm sure they'll deliver in the next one.
I feel like Han deserved a better death. like c'mon...you can't just let a brand new character to the series kill off one of the most badass characters ever. I understand that Han had to go, or else his part in the movie wouldn't have a purpose. But he deserved better.
[tk]Kylo Ren was dope. Fucked up, but dope. I liked his acting even without the mask.
Just got back from seeing it again haha, I agree with you. Leia and Han were talking about how he's always had anger issues and I though this actor did a great job playing the young, hot headed, angsty role. Way better than fucking Hayden Christiansen did for sure. Really stoked to see his character development
inb4 rey is conceived via midi-chlorians (just like Annakin) and leia is her mother, making kylo ren her half-brother, which is why he didn't want to kill her

I dunno, I thought that what made episodes 1-3 bad was that they focused on having a ton of action at the expense of any intriguing plot/character development. So I don't think it's a bad thing if episodes 7-9 go back to 4-6 and are less action based and more character based.
GreeenTeaTru.

I mean, considering Kylo Ren was trained by Snoke and does whatever Snoke tells him, I'm pretty sure Snoke is going to be a bad guy.

just you all wait and see
No offense, but this isn't really that brave of a prediction. I had the same exact thought, and I'm sure so have many, if not most, other people who saw the movie. I don't think anyone will be particularly surprised if Rey ends up being related to Luke, Leia, and Kylo Ren in some way.

Ya im glad they are giving these guys character development ( I love all the characters already) i just hope it isn't super repetitive-- like i hope they don't make rey go through so much training in the force like luke did with yoda. Im not saying there needs to be non-stop action, I just hope there is a little bit more than this one i dunno, personal opinion.
I also know snoke is a bad guy, I just don't think he is a badass villain, but we will see.
I wonder how closely they'll follow the original story tho, I thought snoke and kylo were looking for luke because if he doesn't die, the universe goes into chaos or something like that. I also really hope they don't do they whole thing where rey is kylo's sister ( kylo = jacen solo, rey = mara jade solo).
plyswthsqrrlsok good, Im not the only one. Everyone else I told that theory too thought I was a fucking idiot lol
Yeah, I mean I don't know about the midi chlorians thing, which could potentially be a really good call, but considering Rey's reaction/flashback vision thing when she first found Luke's/Anakin's old lightsaber, it seems pretty likely she's somehow related to them.

Definitely agree that finding the right balance between action scenes and character/plot development is key.
True, but I never felt that Palpatine/Darth Sidious was ever an especially badass villain, either. Hard to be a badass when you're essentially a puppet master sitting back and pulling the strings and letting others go out and actually get shit done.
I'm super curious about what Luke has discovered in that old Jedi temple (Holocrons, Kyber Crystals, that weird tree of life from Shattered Empire...etc).
Gonna say it now Rey is Luke's daughter. He had her when he was young and didn't know all of the Jedi rules about relationships. So when he found out he left her on that planet while that old dude watched over her from a distance.
Also what happened to the cool ships that the Rebel Allience had. A-wings, B-Wings, Y-Wings ( well maybe not because they were introduced in the clone wars). I get they are a resistance unit...but they should of had more varied starships right ?
Right from the original trilogy I always thought growing up that there was symbology between Stormtroopers, the Empire, and Nazi Germany. The speech scene with the high visual contrast & colourization of nazi imagery looked like a scene out of Sincity. I was actually surprised when they added the final coup de grâce of an uppercut further mimicking beyond any shadow of a doubt the reference to the nazi salute. I can understand the comparisons to a totalitarian dictatorship, the first order, and the antagonist relationship they are trying to create; I also can't help but wonder why such striking imagery was used.

It was so striking I laughed a little when that scene popped up. Pretty awkward laugh.
Long shot but I'm thinking Kylo might be Luke's son and Rey and him are brother and sister. They made Kylo think Han was his father for some sort of edge in the fight later on, so his sacrifice well mean something later on and save the galaxy for one last miracle. HOW YOU GONNA JUST KILL HAN?

Yeah, the Nazi, First order comparison was a little too obvious for my liking.

But in order for this to be true, they would have had to know since Kylo was just a small child that he would turn to the dark side. Seems a little far-fetched to think they planned that far ahead into the future on the off chance it would turn out Kylo would be more like Anakin than Luke, no?
