I'm not sure if you ever ran into the whistler freeride club boys but one of their coaches went independent and took some kids with him. I'm not sure how it worked financially. He had the right game plan though. He taught two sets of twins who swept the podium for the Jr's two years ago. Track down Dave Weale and ask him what his game plan was.

If local mountains can pay traditional instructors $30/hr than some nouveau riche sanfran tech can pay NoTeefa $35/hr to teach his adopted child how to slide a rail and do a 360.

Your pay is only of the value you provide. How can you expect the world to consider freeskiing coaching equivalent to engineering, accounting, IT or any of the other professions that are necessary to business operations. Besides that, you get to ski for a job. I would work for food and shelter if that was my job.

I grew up saving pennies for lift tickets, never was in a program, never took a lesson, just learned from my mistakes to get my skiing to where it is today. If I could go back I wouldn't change a thing. I was attracted to skiing because of it's freedom. So I get where you are coming from when you say you paid for your skills with blood, sweat, and bruises. However, there are people (with money) who are attracted to the organization of ski programs, coaching, etc willing to pay for some of that knowledge.


HOWEVER:
I am more than happy with my $12/hr, free season pass, beers paid for by parents, huge gear discounts, and end of season tips.

The fact of the matter is you're being paid to ski. Get a real job if you want more than what is being offered. I know plenty of experienced skiers who would love your coaching gig and would be more than happy being compensated less than half what you are asking for. You are disposable, and mountains realize that.
