Stop age claiming

It doesn't matter how old you are.

Here's what matters:

-Where you grew up in relation to a great mountains/facilities
-How much money your parents make and support you with
-How many opportunities you have to ski/travel (money)
-How motivated you are to progress

-how humble you are.

Semi related to the OP but....

If you are a younger newschooler just remind your parents that they can take fun ski vacations now you are older and not have to worry about shit like putting your dumb ass in ski school so they can happily shred by themselves and have some 'me' time instead of skiing with small children. The reason you might not have gone on many ski trips that involved flying or anything when you were younger is because it would have been too much of a cluster fuck for them carting around small kids at the airport instead of driving to the hill.


I didn't ski outside New England until my Junior year of HS never took any trips as a little kid. Switched from hockey to skiing and it was my only chance at a varsity letter in my high school I wasn't getting one in a fall/spring sport so it wasn't a hard sell getting my dad to take me to Utah so I would get good and not suck as I grew up in a super competitive school and its known that good colleges laugh at applicants who don't play varsity something or other. Hes too old and in bad health to shred now but those were some awesome trips between Utah and Tahoe.

I say age claim all you want. I'm far more impressed when I see a kid who is 11 has dub 10 versus anyone over 17.

This, i honestly dont care if people age claim, if somebody is 12 and can dub they must have worked pretty hard to get to that point, doesnt matter if they have had a coach they still have to work hard.

As a young buck I always wanted to be the best. Now as a father myself and in the depths of middle ageness I can say, you will never be the best. You can however be happy. Age claiming is just a way to compare yourself with others. That's great and all until you realize that, just like age, ranks are just a number. The only number that really counts is how many friends and family you are surrounded by when you time comes.

It absolutely matters. Skiing is a very expensive sport, especially skiing park where you are constantly destroying high end gear. There is little to no chance you can get good coming from a low income household, and if you think otherwise, you're just being delusional. Think about this too, living close to skiing will help you progress, and guess where has really expensive real estate? Close to skiing.

Hate to break it to you pal, but if you got money, you're gonna have an easier time getting good at skiing.

I think the biggest problem I have with age claiming is when it's done to try and lower another's self pride. Comments like "I'm 12 and I can do all of those tricks" on an edit when someone is really stoked on their progress are just useless and uncalled for.

you're an idiot. "There is little to no chance you can get good coming from a low income household" not true, at all. realistically skiing a home town resort isnt much more than playing sports such as hockey. its when you start traveling to ski and going to summer camps and such that the money racks up, but thats the same with any sport. i mean fuck, torin yater wallace didnt come from a rich family at all (im pretty sure, correct me if im wrong) and hes a better skier than 99.99% of people. its all about the motivation, and that could come from being rich, or being poor, but dont try and discourage people because their family isnt rich

there are certain situations where if someone is determined enough the can get good on their own with low funds. but definitely having money put into makes a big difference like being to ski with the best coach all year will definitely make you better than someone who is a weekend warrior.

Dude, he's from aspen.

I'm not saying that being poor is going to make you inherently bad at skiing. But skiing is one of the sports where having more money is going to get you so much further opportunity wise. Gear is expensive, passes are expensive, joining teams so you can get coaching, travelling to contests. This stuff adds up. Again, you're being delusional if you think it doesn't matter.

Completely disagree, I live 10 minutes away from my hill in an average middle class house, second skiing in no way comes down to gear you have I've seen kids who buy brand new gear each season and still can barely slide a rail. It all comes down to motivation and your will to ski.money plays a very small role in how good you are "pal".

Yes, hes from Aspen, but he was literally homeless. Of course money will get you much further opportunity wise, but thats the same everywhere. whether it be sports or schools. but money will not make someone grasp those opportunities. How many kids do you see with brand new Saga and ON3P's who can barely carve yet brag about being the best skier because of their gear. What im getting at is yes, money will get you opportunities but youre much better off with motivation and no money than with millions and no motivation.

there is nothing wrong with age claiming. who cares. lol im in my 30s and damn proud to still go in the park and hit handrails and throw it off jumps.. i see it as inspiration to others that it doesnt matter how old you are, you can do these things.

last year had some 12 year old ask me and a buddy how old we were and when we responded he goes "wow, i hope im still doing it at that age" while it made me feel old as hell compared it made me realize that kids like to see that it doesnt matter how old you are, just have fun doing what you do.

as for how much money your parents make... you do realize you will soon not have their money right? you'll get your own job and have to support yourself...

claiming what mountain you come from is hometown pride and has nothing to do with if you are better than someone or not.. just look at the pros and where all the top contenders came from. small mountains in flat areas and just put in the time to get better and better.


tl:dr Skiing is meant to be fun wherever you are from, how little/much you make, how old/young you are. end of the day everyone in the bar giving props to each other for the day they had dont care about any of that stuff, just about having fun skiing.

age claiming is just dumb tho, everyone can tell if you are a lil kid or an old dude by looking at you. Style is universal, regardless of age. you either are comfortable with your own body at that point in your life, or you aren't and your skiing will appear accordingly

I mean I kinda agree with this but its the same for every sport accept like hacky sack or something lol. But I really if your hill doesn't have a park and you don't have enough money to travel to a nice park, you're stuck with PVC rails, homemade jumps, and maybe urban if you're good enough.

agreed. skiing has a weird relationship with age. i swear some of my friends were talking like old, washed up geezers in their early 20s. meanwhile there are 30-40 year olds taking huge hits in skiing, not to mention pro football and hockey players.

i'm 27 and i feel better than ever. the only real issue with aging is that your life becomes a lot more disrupted by injuries than it does when youre a teenager

I get mean mugged all the time because I'm 38 and wear Saga, FT, and Line. I started skiing in 09 and have never been taught how to oldschool ski. Only difference is I gas out earlier then younger people and I think before I do shit before I drink. The way I see, I don't care about your problems. If you have a problem with it that's your problem not mine.

Op has a good point, some people dont have priviledges of parent funding and living near snow/mountains and it shouldn't make them feel bad just because younger spoiled kids can dub at age 10

I think that what most people are missing is that to a career-minded 12 year old, age claiming is an effective way to tell potential sponsors how much time/potential they have to get even better. Not about time spent, but time left. Age claiming is here to stay for that reason alone.

My dad grew up in a lowerclass farm where they built their own skis and jumps which they got towed into by a snowmobile made out of an old chainsaw motor

A lot of NS mis-interpreted this thread. I think its amazing to see young guns and older folks killing it, it gets me inspired.

What I'm getting at is that age shouldn't matter at all. You can be 12 (like me obviously) or 56, and crush it as hard as anyone out there. So there's no reason claim it so hard.

People saying that how much money your parents have and where you live doesn't matter, really?

Any kid that is good enough to be age claiming and get noticed on ns had been coached. I know this is a generalization and there may be some outliers but for the most part you have to agree.

Money:
Coaching isn't cheap, summer camp isn't cheap, ski gear isn't cheap, driving back to and from to the hill isn't cheap, and season passes or day tickets on vacation aren't cheap.

Sure, make the argument that anyone can make it if they try hard enough blah blah blah. That's all fine and dandy if you're old enough to work, but we aren't talking about people who are, thus it's an irrelevant argument.

Time:
Some parents just simply don't have the time to ferry their kid back and forth to the hill. If your parents aren't into the sport, it's likely that you don't ski near as much as someone whose parents are. Even more so, they now have school programs dedicated to young kids focusing on skiing. If you're an average kid, you really just don't spend as much time skiing as kids going to those programs.

Location:
Not only does proximity to a ski hill matter, but which ski hills you can access greatly impacts how good you can get. Yeah some kids from the midwest can get pretty damn good but i guarantee that they've made trips out west at some point. Speaking from a purely park standpoint, you can get pretty good with the right amount of drive even if you're at a small hill, however you'll be using lots of the other two things I mentioned. Speaking on big mountain skiing, well it's pretty obvious that you have to live somewhere with real mountains to get good at it.

All in all, if you're young enough to be age claiming, chances are that you owe a fair amount of it to your parents commitment. Hell, I'm not even that good and I still feel like I owe my parents taking me up skiing all the time when I was younger.
