Should I get a job?

I'm fucking stuck. I basically worked this summer/fall so that I could be set for winter. So I quit my job last month so that I could ski as much as I wanted without worrying about shit. But it's clearly not going to be a good year and I have nothing to do. I don't really have any friends so I have a lot more free time than I would like to admit.

So I could get a job but what if I get stuck working during the only good days of the year?
But at the same time I don't want to do nothing and just wait for snow. I have a lot of trips planned(totally about 4 weeks) so I don't know if I could find a job flexible enough for that.

I guess that's what it comes down to, flexibility. I have college and skiing and other obligations. So I don't know. Would it be a bad idea to get a job? I have just enough money to make it through this winter with rent, food, gas, but really nothing else. But I don't wanna miss out on skiing. Fuck. Help me NS.

It is December, early December. It is way too early to be writing off the season.

If you NEED the money, certainly, get a job. You could do some temporary work for the holiday season to make some extra cash, but it would be short-term. Another option would be volunteer work at an animal shelter or something similar that has high turnover and requires little training.

However, if you financially stable (for a college student), then find a new passion/hobby, be it athletic, academic, or social. Joining a club/team will have the same effect on your resume as a job will with the added bonus of meeting more people your age.

Also, take the time to workout, develop good eating habits, sleeping habits, and athletic habits because it will only get harder as you get older.

There are a million ways to fill up those empty hours during the days where you would be skiing, you just need to figure out what you want to do besides ski.

Hell, I just saw that you wanted to get better at French or Italian. See if you can audit/sit in on a class next semester if you need the structure, or if you want flexibility, use one of the gazillion online classes/apps/programs that will teach you the language.

Exactly what I was gonna type. Remember, friend - this is the first world. No matter what you do, ain't gonna starve, you ain't gonna die of weather exposure. Lots of freedom in that fact. Don't think of money as so closely tied to survival once you've bought your ski gear ;)

I am a strong supporter in getting a job. I recently quit work a couple months ago and started my own business independently and am doing alright for myself. But I found I had so much free time on my hands and I felt like I needed to do something. So what better way than to get a part time job in something I love that allows me to get discounts. Couple days later I got a job at Evo.

Get a job where you can work nights during the weekends. I only work Saturday and Sunday nights so I can still ski 9-4 during the weekends and 4-9 during weekdays.

I have noticed that family restraunts and small businesses usually have more flexible schedules for their employees.

I respectfully disagree. If you like that it is fine for you but im of the opinion that if you need a job to help you fill your free time you need to think a little harder about other interests. Again not talking shit and evo is already sic deals so i bet you get pretty baller discounts. I personally will never have too much free time but that could be biased because I ski and golf and do hood rat shit with all my spare time.

Also if you get a part time job and it gets good you can always blow it off and be a jerk so you can ski.

I only ski at night and have class during the day. Last year I worked weekends and honestly it was super shitty. I wanna get a job for winter break but I kinda think that would be more of a burden on an employer than anything.

What? There are a million retail places that need people up until christmas to keep up with the hoards. I work the week before christmas at a shop every year to keep my proforms and they are happy to have me because they can use all the help they can get. Probably should have started around thanksgiving if you really wanted to work over winter break tho.

Well yeah, I quit my job around that time though because I was planning on skiing and the forecast at the time was not so awful haha.

I have finals until the 21st of December, move back home the 22nd. Best case scenario, start working the 26th. I need off Jan 10-January 20th because I will be traveling and then I move back to my apartment for school on January 24th. So that gives me... 18 days of work over break. But my parents live an hour away so it's not realistic to get a job there if I'm only going to work 18 days and then move back up here. Likewise driving an hour to and from work every day probably isn't reasonable either considering driving that far gives me way too much anxiety. Unless it's like a place with multiple locations or something.


But fuck I don't want to work during the semester but I also don't want to be a fucking leach. I didn't work much this semester and I'm sitting at a 4.0 GPA and like, I need that. FUCK. I shouldn't have quit my job yet. I fucked up and now I'm pretty much stuck.

It's clearly not going to be a good year because the fall is off to a rough start? It's the east coast. Generally places are open, but mostly with man made anyway. This could end up being an epic season. Same with getting snowfall and cold temps in october not always = a great winter. Plenty of times it's snowed hard and then dipped off, gotten warm, and rained mid season.

That said do whatever. Maye get a part time job.

You're in college right? There are a lot of university jobs that will be really flexible with your schedule, because they understand that you're a student and need time to do school (or ski...but they don't need to know that). I bet your school has an employment page, I would check it out if you're interested in working a small number of hours.

Employment/work study is part of financial aid here and my dad makes too much money for me to receive much. I can only work to make up to $350 per year /:

I was in the same situation while I was at college. Needed to balance school+job+skiing. And, like you, I could only ski at night. The solution for me was I worked at a car dealership washing cars. Basically, the dealership's service department was open late typically on Thursday's and reduced hours on Saturday's. Whenever people spent over $X to service their car, they got a free wash. I was the guy who washed those cars. So I worked part time, after hours on Thursday's and Saturday during the day. It gave me enough money to survive, fuel my skiing habit, and left me enough time for my school stuff. Plus it was a pretty chill job: washing cars, driving cars...

Around now, its tire season for all dealers. If you can drive stick (which, I didn't when I started, burned through A LOT of brand new clutches trying to learn :P), and you have a clean record, lots of dealers might be looking for extra help. Also, lots of dealers more or less offer the same service that I just described.

Its just an idea :P

My local hills hire kids during there winter break to just work college kids over winter break, maybe your mountain can hook you up there, if not I would suggest small companies, or a ski shop, its like the best job if you love the sport... Also know a lot of personal trainers/gym rats that train people and you basically don't have to know anything besides a few safety things and they basically pick when they want to work. (This kinda only applies I guess if you gym often lol)

I worked at my hill last year. it's like an hour 15 minutes away and they don't do part time really. Shifts are 7-10 hours which means I could only work on saturday and sunday and it's kind of shitty. I spent more money on gas last year than I did on everything else combined. We also aren't looking at opening until mid january as of now. And I will be in Whistler so like.. yeah I'm not sure that would work. And the closest shop is an hour 30 away which just wouldn't work out.

After thinking about it more, theres like very little chance I am going to be able to anything job wise and it's kind of a lost cause at this point.

I'd say get a job. A lot of people hate on people who have stupid hobbies (like constantly putting go-fast parts on cars). But you have to figure, without these crazy hobbies, these people would have 0 incentive to work.
If you're perfectly content living in a $600/month apartment and play Halo/WoW/whateverthefuckkidsareplayingthesedays, you could totally afford to live off of a beginners McDonalds salary.

I'm only like 19 with little financial responsibility. I mean like I pay my rent, utilities, food, gas, tuition and my phone bill but I have it covered for the next at least 4, up to 6 months without a job.

But if i don't get a job then I just turn into that girl with a rich daddy paying for all my stuff, right?

I don't know. I want a job or just something to fucking do. I'm sick of sitting at home every fucking day. I can't figure out a job that would make sense though. Fuck idk what to do.

Id say no job, enjoy the time in life you don't "need" a job, get a hobby or be patient about your ski season. I only worked summers when I was in college and it was dope af. I did freelance for a few years and still had some free time and now I've been working full time for a little over two years and I definitely am glad I waited to go full time until I needed to.

Of course you should get a job. Just look for a good one. My shift start at 4PM. It's plenty of time to shred some pow on the blower days and still make it to work.
