TeafastI really am getting sick of seeing Tanner ripping a dart when I log in to ns. Can we just get that outta here?
Mr.BishopWe have been allowing the community to decide what goes into the homepage slider. For whatever reason, that got a bunch of upvotes.
Should we stop that?
MinggI will say, I enjoyed that more than a lot of the news that has been getting posted.
Seems like it's been sort of spammy lately in the news section lately.

TeafastI don't trust the voting majority of NS. Do you?
TeafastAgreed. It's a bit of a shitshow.
Mr.BishopExamples?
Mr.BishopExamples?
If people are feeling that that isn't working out and we should start really cracking down and only allowing a few of us to decide what is cool and what isn't I mean I guess we could take a look at it.
TeafastI was sorta joking but I mean I just think there are some cases when the first thing you see when you log in to NS shouldn't be some 40 year old ripping a cig up close and personal
eheathIt's a top rated article, get over it dude.
TeafastI am. It's gone from existence. I just saw it a bunch in 24-36 hours and i got mad and made a thread.

Mr.BishopHere's a wuestion - would you prefer a more curated experience?
We were skiing's original social media and that is what we're based around right now. We could curate the news more if we wanted to and the tastes of the community can be ignored in favor of our edit staff.
MinggNo, please don't (: (:
cydwhitBe the change you want to see.... write something better that will bump it off the front page.
Mr.BishopYeah I mean that is sort of where I'm at... though I constantly get complaints about the 'views of the communty' when its different from what a person likes.
We may add a little more weight to the senior editor's votes or something like that, so there is a sprinkle of curation mixed into an otherwise normal voting system. SOmething like that.

MinggYeahhh. People get really defensive about their views and like I don't know if that's a new thing or if I'm just noticing it now.. but a lot of people act like you're the devil if you don't agree. To an extent it's hilarious but also a little concerning.
I think a lot of people spend too much time formulating their views on what something SHOULD be, instead of going out and actually making it what it should be.
.Roockley.potentially have member submitted content separate from staff/contributor submitted content
eg, twig and tom always submit sweet articles that can disappear kinda quickly around other content
i did like it when there were different trending lists for news, videos, photos etc
Mr.BishopYeah again - we really felt strongly to put staff content in the same place as regular members, so that anyone is open for a chance.
Hell - that is how we found Tom, Twig, Sam, Sklar, Jamie, Erica, Cy, Erika - and everyone else making up the current content team. That is something really important to not forget in all this... the fact that we opened it up to everyone and allowed everyone to post in the same place is the reason we ever found our current content team.
If we hadn't done that it'd be basically me and Schmuck deciding what was cool. Any of you who had an opportunity would have had to send us an article which would likely have never been published, and frankly would probably get ignored in an email backlog and we'd only hire homies we met through friends.
So there are significant upsides to the open, mixed system which we shouldn't so easily discount.
.Roockley.good points i see where you're coming from, i guess its only rare occurrences that random shit gets on the front page, just still kinda irks me when i see it though
maybe a staff recommended list could work kinda like vimeo staff picks?

Mr.BishopI mean the logic I'm going on right now is that the occasional off-brand post is a tolerable side effect of having an open system - which has so many benefits.
The problem is you can't go too far with holding down the people's voice, if you want to find all the new hot talent out of the people. That is the conundrum we face. Right now, we're sticking with the idea that we keep it open because the positives outweigh the negatives.
As we build up more of an elite team of content creators perhaps we'll have some ability to do staff picks, features, etc. I still really want to make sure though that the average person gets a crack at it.
Hell, right now one photo/article can lead you down the path of a ski industry media career. Videos are a bit more competitive, but same deal really - the people who start participating are really rapidly becoming players in this industry.
eheathWhat's wrong with non staff stuff being on the front page? It only gets to the front page if the community votes it there...
