How do you pack your gear for flights?

So I'm sure this has been discussed before but the searchbar sucks and time is of the essence...

Who travels a lot with their skis? I'm talking flights in and out of destination spots. I'm going on a trip soon and want to get a bag for both my park and pow skis. I'll be there a week and can't commit to one pair so early in advance. I need to get a travel bag for them and was wondering how my fellow NS'ers pack their gear for flying across the country. What do you check in your ski bag? What is the best bag? What do you carry on? What should I do? I plan on flying on a couple different occasions with all of my stuff this season so i need some baggage..

Armada anchorage ski bags for skis/poles and whatever else I can fit and stay under the weight limit, larger duffel bag for everything else, boots strapped to my carry on (you can replace/rent everything else if you need to, boots are so individual losing them can easily ruin a trip)

I usually put as many things into my ski bag(mostly clothes) that I can because:

1) It provides extra padding for my skis

2) It saves space and $$$ for less bags

Then I usually do the same with my boot bag( I wash my boot liners first so my stuff doesn't smell like ass) and carry it on the plane with me, and then if I still have to bring stuff I just pack it into a small duffle or pack.

i have a dakine double bag.. fits two pairs of skis plus outerwear. I use a bootbag for my boots and other random shit i have. I used to just travel with my boots strapped to a Dakine Heli pro backpack but thats annoying as fuck for travel. Be sure your bag is under the regulations for the airline otherwise they will fuck you with fees. I pack my bag to 47-50 pounds (50 is the limit for Delta)

ski bag, duffel bag that fits in overhead bin stuff as much gear into it as possible (stuff boots with socks and gloves etc.), wear jacket/big hoodies so they don't take up space, back pack for under the seat with all the regular back pack things and buckle helmet to backpack

thanks for the advice. has anyone ever had an issue with length? or do the airlines strictly go by weight?

strictly on weight. Length is not an issue on any standard ski bag. Mine is 185 for reference

Also you may look into getting a ski bag that is significantly larger than your skis because that way you have more room plus if you ever get bigger skis youre good.

I rock a Burton snowboard bag that could probably fit 3-4 pairs of skis. I usually load it up with 2 and then protect them with my base layers and then mid layers, as well as gloves etc. You can also pack clothes if you need to, just make sure that you tell the check in person that you only have skis in there or else they may charge extra. Shovels, probe, and beacon also go in when I need it.

I clip my boots and helmet on the outside of my bag. Put goggles/goggle bag inside the helmet and clip it on with a Carabiner, and I also clip my water bottle on as well. It's really fucking heavy, but I don't want to check another bag.

Outerwear gets stuffed in my bag for clothes. You could put it in the ski bag too if you only want to check one bag, I just don't want to risk my edges cutting them up.

B_Kstrictly on weight. Length is not an issue on any standard ski bag. Mine is 185 for reference


ok cool. the one im looking at is 195, the armada long hauler. My bent chetlers are 192 and I don't ever see myself going over 195 in the near future so i'm thinking that should be pretty solid. then i can stash my outerwear in there, take my boots in the backpack with small stuff and a duffle bag to stash above the seats

yea sounds about right. I also normally throw my boots up top too because there is no way for them to comfortably be around your seat. What airline are you flying on?

sick. My dad works for Delta and love flyin on them. Id just make sure when you are boarding to have the boots attached to something whether that be your Backpack or duffle bag just so it appears you only have 2 carry ons. Ive never run into an issue with a gate agent calling me out but just be aware is all. Once you're in the jetway you are good.

Got an awesome Dakine snowboard bag. Usually fits 2 pairs of skis no problems + poles + all of my skiing outerwear and misc crap like iron, wax, etc.

ALWAYS carry your boots on the plane with you. Never check them in. I also carry my gloves,goggles, and helmet on carry on as well.

Im a lightweight traveler..usually fly in nice clothes, carry a book, magazine, phone, headphones, laptop thats about it.

And I rock another bag for all the rest of my clothes throughout the trip.
