For all you post college folks who else is or has gone through the job struggle? I just need to vent and see if I'm not the only person who is so sick of job apps, networking, applying online, human resources, etc. Post your:

Success?


I'll start:

Degree: Environmental Science
Time out of college: 2 1/2 yrs
# of Jobs: At least 200 jobs since senior year
Success?: Well, I'm back to being unemployed so...

Sounds like an awesome major man, really sucks you don't have a job. I'm a senior in high school going into wildlife resources.. Now i'm worried.

DBack1321Volunteering is all fine and dandy to get experience and get your foot in the door, but he already said he is hardly making it by right now. How will giving away his time for free help him pay bills unless he has something saved up?

If if you have the means and the time, by all means volunteer, but not everyone has that luxury.


So you either work other jobs at the same time(service industry would be ideal), or take a meh full-time job that pays well while continuing to search for your ideal job.

Im in my first semester as a machinist at local community college. I have already had 2 companies contact me looking to pick me up and pay for my schooling. I will start around 50-60k

Pick the right field and don't be an idiot. Work hard, be competitive.

Of course you arent getting a job in a liberal arts, business, art history, or some other stupid bullshit major. wtf do you expect. Pick a field that actually offers something worthwhile to society you fucking crumbs. Or just go work at a ski resort for $9/ hr

No I'm lucky as shit. It's not even really my field but it was close enough. My roommate from college who has the same degree and all works a shit job from 6pm-6am doing something that doesn't require his degree or knowledge. I'm just saying the notion that there's plenty of jobs for undergrad degree STEM majors isn't true probably.

Certain STEM majors are pretty useless without postgraduate degrees.

Got my first job out my final school practicum. Second job was within the same organization.
Third job, same field, different province.

Starting to look for something different though. Only looking right now and haven't applied for anything yet, but the search is on.

0 jobs applied for, did apply for about 10 internships a few years back though.

Success? I think so, working full time in the industry is pretty ok.

Volunteering is cool BUT you have to sort of be a mover and shaker if you want opportunities to come as a result of it.

Just volunteering and showing up isn't enough you will have to network and put yourself out there and let it be known how badly you would love a related paid job. ANd then it will happen. But if you think all you have to do is volunteer and an opportunity will present itself it won't. 3 years of volunteer experience, a network of connects, and a passion for the field may be what it takes to land that job. 6 months out of college
originally applied to ~20 jobs through a mix of career fairs and online. Got several interviews from the fair, but 0 from online applications. Got my current job by dropping off my resume and talking to the rep for a few minutes, so I think applying in person is huge.

Landed a job in management at a natural gas facility. Might be a good idea to look into that market and as it is rapidly growing and it heavily involves environmental regulations

Grad school should be an achievement. It shouldn't be available to everyone who wants it. It should only be for the A+ worthy candidates.

I get annoyed when folks think they deserve a good job. IMO its all a part of the "participation trophy" mentality. Success isn't and shouldnt be easy to obtain for the vast majority. OP just needs to keep busting his ass, harder than he is doing now, smarter than he is doing now. Yes it can be discouraging, life isn't fair.

Talent and hard work matter. Just cause you work harder doesn't mean you're a better candidate.

You need to show why you are the best candidate. Not just a good candidate. The blue ribbon, the gold medal are the things that count. Not good effort, and trying hard.

Life isn't fair. Career success isn't something that is deserved.

Engineering PhD student here. No post grad experience. Had some internships during undergrad but didn't take any time after graduation before starting grad school.

While you're right that it is competitive to go, the good experience aspect depends on the field. Top MBA programs? Yes, post grad experience is essential. An MBA right outta business school would be pretty laughable. PhD programs? Academic performance, research experience, and recommendations are more important than post grad experience. And for masters, if you're remotely qualified and can pay for it, it's not too difficult to get in because since a masters is a professional degree it usually requires no financial commitment on behalf of the school/department.

I can't speak to cool, but I can tell you that if you're interested in money, engineering is not the field. Well, actually, what do you consider a lot of money?

200k+. I got this from word of mouth though, I really don't know what engineers make. I would guess only the best engineer jobs would make this.

The executive level makes that. That's not outta reach, but that's a lot of time you gotta put in first.

If you wanna make lots of money go into finance or sales. Do engineering because you love it, or because you like the life it will let you lead.

Nvm, I thought you were talking about ME not ChemE. Most of the points remain the same, though the salaries are a little higher but post grad degrees are also more necessary.

I got a degree in Marketing and Business but now I have a career as a Brewer in which I have made a serious move to further that career.

I did apply for maybe like 7 jobs in the marketing field but I found out how much I actually dislike that field.

I love it so far. It's pretty interesting and like I said the industry is only growing. One day I'll have my design completed for a fuel tank that can store liquefied natural gas and all our cars will run on it. Then I'll be a millionaire lol

Is it in a related field to your majors? I'm currently in the midst of doing this degree and was wondering what sort of opportunities it leads to. I really enjoy both of those topics and I am pretty good at them but I'm concerned of what opportunities it will lead to career wise.
