Okay, ill be the first to say it; i hate who Gus is judging by his social media presence. I have never met Gus, so I'm not gonna say i hate him personally, i just hate who he is on social media. This has nothing to do with him being gay, and this has nothing to do with him having "no style" (i actually really dig his skiing). i just hate how he uses his coming out of the closet as leverage to promote himself, which is entirely wrong. Now i said nothing at the time because i had no reason to. Now i do. Gus is now using his massive social media following to essentially rig the freeskier magazine skier of the year, not cool.
Gus, if you're reading this i respect you for your skiing, nothing more
i know I'm gonna get tons of hate for this but i don't even care.

are you mad because you had far and above the worst edit of the bunch? the most impressive edit won from a difficulty and technicality standpoint (which was the goal) and nick mcnutt ended up with a bunch of filming opportunities and a relative jump start to his pro career. i'd say the contest was pretty on point.

.. I should add, I think I actually met Nick by accident in March 2008 in Whistler when he did something switch off Air Jordan. People were cheering, 10 mins later he was sitting next to me on the chairlift and too stoked to really chat. Blah..

Yeah, I was in line at the chairlift and he jumped the queue: straight through the ski school entrance to where I was at the front like he owned the place. It might not have been him though, although I think people were saying "Nick McNutt."

Anyway, maybe Dan and Gus should do some skiing together.

Anybody familiar with the TV show "Angry Boy's" and the Tim/ Jen Okazaki storyline?

From wikipedia:
"Jen Okazaki is a softly-spoken Japanese wife and mother of three who moved with her family from Japan to Santa Barbara, California in the United States for a better life. She focuses mainly on turning her first son Tim Okazaki into a skateboarding champion. Deciding that she can promote his career better from Tokyo, she moves the family back to Japan. She markets him not only as a cute Japanese boy but also as a homosexual. She builds a successful empire around Tim's skateboarding success, "GayStyle Enterprises", in which she sells penis-shaped whistles, perfume dispensers, water bottles and scrubbing brushes.

During the show, Jen takes Tim to see the doctors and finds out that he is overworked and depressed. She tries to get Tim more relaxed and decides to take some of his responsibilities. She also gets Tim a dog named Gay Dog, which she claims is "the first ever gay dog". Jen wants Tim to become best friends with the dog and to teach it how to skate. Your edit was pitiful, and it was gracious of TGR to frankly even post that abomination to the voting page. You should thank them daily that another dozen people were tricked into watching a 3 minute commercial for your skis that no one wants. But yeah...I'm sure you only lost because of the "popularity" element. Has it occurred to you that popularity is directly proportional (largely) to someone's skill/style on a pair of skis?

P.S. Nick McNutt didn't even fucking win, dude. Please continue grinding your imaginary axe against the guy though, this is the best non-feud in NS history.

I can't even address your patronizing ass "advice" you gave him, the lunacy of the whole situation makes me feel like I'm drifting away from reality.

Social media is the issue, not Gus. Yes of corse it's a popularity contest, social media has made everything that way. Gus is just using it to his advantage to win- its a smart move. The fact that he's gay gets him more attention, and that is really what its all about- attention.

Its a bummer that social media has turned skiing into a "likes" community.

You're right , they don't . But to vote for someone without knowing very much about the sport itself isn't cool, especially if they don't know who else is running against Gus.
Not saying this is actually happening, just an assumption.

If the other skiers aren't popular enough to be known, maybe they havnt made much of an impact in/for skiing?

In any case, you do realize we are talking about a freeskier fan vote, right? In which freeskier itself asked the skiers to specifically leverage their social media presence... Because no one gave a shit about this vote until Gus blew it up and got people voting.


This is freeskier. It makes epicski look core lol.

I think when Gus tasted that C list fame he really liked it and now wants to hold on to it. I dont really like how hes now the face of skiing because hes gay. Thats what it takes for a free skier to be on the cover of ESPN.

Y'all are hugely missing the point - why do you think pro skiers are even on social media in the first place?

Complaining that Gus increased his social media presence is like complaining that a business owner makes too much money - it's EXACTLY the goal of a sponsored athlete. Freeskier came up with social media rankings a while back for pro skiers to have more leverage to negotiate contracts with companies - because that's a large part of how a skier provides value to a company. Fundamentally, their primary role is to promote brands by being more visible - on social media or not.

If the idea of 'selling out and cashing in' irks you, your issue is with what a pro skier's real job is - not with Gus or social media.

The problem here is the dumb decision of Freeskier Mag to run a reader vote poll for an award. Its so obvious that everyone in the line up chivvys all their buds to vote for them with face appeals and so on. Alls fair in love and war!

This was the problem a few years ago with TextGames when Dumont un-fairly (by measurement of skill) won the big air at X based on "viewers" sms / phone text voting.

What usually happens here is that some bright un-read spark who fancys himself as a marketing guru says "hey let the people speak" / "lets give the power to the people" / "bottom up marketing" and enivitably: "urban gorrilla marketing" yawn, yawn.

The result: total crap.

The readers /viewers get pissed, the magazine / TV Channel lose some brand cred, and the winner gets a hate campaign going against them. That is why ESPN never repeated the TextGames disaster.

If Freeskier want to go full out to be a celebrity mag (they have shown enough signs of wanting to go that way in the past), then fine. But please change the name of your mag to "Celeb Skier" and then we all know to ignore / laugh / dispise it.

I have said it before and say it again; Skiing isnt a sport that should be judged or made into a competition. Fan votes are a joke. Its so lame that you ask people to vote for you. Like insanely lame, its disgusting. Skiing needs to a take a few bites out of the humble pi and stop trying to be so fucking cool. Its cool with out all this other bullshit.

No, maybe 1 or 2 inquiries. Someone from http://www.exoticskis.com/ wanted to test them, though. Only one other person has used them (thought they were fun on piste.) I D R I S has the moulds and was trying to sell a pair on a forum but seemingly ignored or laughed-off.

I actually think they'd be good in the steep and deep, because they are a slow speed pow ski but with exceptional float and maneuverability. As bizarre as it sounds, I think a guy like Gus could use them in the backcountry and get off on the style/feeling aspect of it and catch airs off little things that others would ignore or be unable to get-to. That being said, I'm not sure that being slow-speed pow ski is compatible with sluff. Hard to predict.

I was hoping for things to settle down and for him to focus on skiing. When you type his name in on YouTube you get a bunch of gay themed interviews and him being featured with gay YouTubers rather than ski videos. On his fanpages he just posts gay stuff now instead of skiing stuff. And soz but that video of him singing on the chairlift "baby it's cold outside" was one of the cringiest things I've ever seen. What a douche nozzle. Unfollowed him all over.

I think the freeskiing community has a tendency to resist the fact that the sport is becoming mainstream, and more competitive; skiers can no longer just be "chill" and still succeed in the industry. They need to market themselves, and Gus is doing just that. There's a reason he's one of the most successful/famous skiers to date.

hmm (I meant to say McNutt) but I do want to see Gus on my skis (heartslayers) in the backcountry. With the lightness, central stance, upright and low-twist standing position, pole-free, good flotation, low-sluff and maneuverability I'm sure he could do some mad tricks (but they are low speed so you're not going to be charging.) Whether that actually happens or not is another story, but life should be about be searching for new forms of healthy gaiety. You can do whatever you want, (just don't forget to film and share it.)

Their favorite indie band that was so underground but signed to a major label and they heard of through radio airplay on a major station, but they were still underground as fuck because they war clothes from the civil war era thrift store and uses strange instruments to get that super cool "look how fucking indie we are" effect. But now for their latest album they cut their hair, and are dressing a little bit more normal, which means they've totally sold out and lost the soul they had, which was really just artificial to begin with to achieve desired indie sound and look and get them famous.
