Okay, ill be the first to say it; i hate who Gus is judging by his social media presence. I have never met Gus, so I'm not gonna say i hate him personally, i just hate who he is on social media. This has nothing to do with him being gay, and this has nothing to do with him having "no style" (i actually really dig his skiing). i just hate how he uses his coming out of the closet as leverage to promote himself, which is entirely wrong. Now i said nothing at the time because i had no reason to. Now i do. Gus is now using his massive social media following to essentially rig the freeskier magazine skier of the year, not cool.
Gus, if you're reading this i respect you for your skiing, nothing more
i know I'm gonna get tons of hate for this but i don't even care.

I completely agree with you. the other day I was trolling around on Gus's facebook and half of the stuff made me cringe so hard, especially one where he called himself a "country girl". eheathyeah people who complain about someone 'selling out' would more than likely sell out if they got that option. Basically anyone with a specialized skill in any field is 'selling out' by being themselves and doing that job. Like why wouldn't you be core and draw pictures of buildings for fun?

That being said, i dont get why people are so mad about someone profiting off of themselves, anyone else would do it if they could, but there will always be haters.

It doesn't bother me that much, SOTY is a popularity contest anyway, he's doing what he is supposed to do. I get that it's a bit bothering that the people voting for him probably aren't even able to perform the infamous switch, but that's how internet contests work.

What bothered me is how all the mainstream media presented Gus as the 'Best freeskier on the planet' when he came out.

Because he was gay, his skiing improved all of a sudden. The dude rips, no question, but I didn't know he was even a contestant for the title. I don't think anyone can be labeled as such today, but even if you only consider comp results, I'd think of at least 3 other guys before him. Fucking reporters can't get their facts right.

This fucking happened last year as well with people complaining about Gus using his sochi puppy success to get fangirls to like his FB page. Now people are complaining that he is using gay as a tool to get more votes. what will he do next year? How can he top adopting puppies and being gay? They guy is the best contest skier out there right now, and its frankly not that close. You may disagree with the title of best skier, but it is not at all outlandish for that label to be applied to Gus in this context.

If the freeskier magazine wanted the skier of the year to be a fair competition they would have limited the voting to members only. They are after publicity too. Hate the system, not the skier. Every year that he's been nominated Gus has asked his followers to vote for him. What is so wrong about that this time?

I've been following Gus a lot over the years and as much as he can be an attention whore, he always shouts out and talks up other skiers on his social media. Just nine weeks ago he reposted Russ Henshaw's instagram video with the quote "Huuuuge props to russhenshaw for sacking up and being the first guy to do a double cork onto a rail #videogameshit #repost" and during the Olympics he posted an Instagram pic of Joss sitting on the five rings with this message underneath. "This is josschristensen. He won the Olympics two days ago and he is THE man! I'm lucky to have known Joss since we were 12 years old and it's been an honour to watch him develop as a person and progress as an athlete. His #roadtosochi was a little bumpier than most, with his father passing away this fall and after a slow start to his season he just barely clinched the 4th and final spot for our Olympic team. I just wanted to express how proud I am of him for persevering and ending up on top - it's been a long time coming!"

If you don't like his social media and if its gotten too 'gay' for you, just unfollow and admire his skiing....

I don't think he's going to win but If he does I'm going to be happy, happy because he put down the best pipe run I've ever seen this year in park city and because it's the fifth year in a row he's gotten the AFP overall. That's all down to his hard work and skill as a skier. I can't begrudge him the freeski 'skier of the year' magazine title just because he asked his followers to vote for him...

Freeskier is definitely to blame here. If they cared about more than facebook likes, they would determine the winner themselves (i.e. with an expert panel), and given a 'peoples choice' award to the winner with the most votes. Like the real SOTY contest

Now i'm probably just unlucky and have a bunch of assholes in my area and at my school.

What i'm trying to say is that i just wish skiing was just about skiing. You ski because you love to ski and enjoy hanging out with friends and having fun. It shouldn't have to be about who won this or if gus kenworthy is uncut or not or oh this person can do this trick and you can't. for fuck sakes can't we just ski to ski, ski to love the sport, ski to have fun, it shouldn't be a big deal, It should just be skiing.

Even if he did use his situation to benefit his own well being in my own opinion I dont see it as a huge deal. StevenH24i might get flamed a bit for this but i honestly think you guys are looking at the contest the wrong way. Its meant to be a popularity contest how they have it set up, not actually a testament of skill. if it was, it would be set up differently.

And as to gus's social media, in my opinion the freestyle community owes Gus immensely for broadcasting the sport to millions of people that have never even heard or seen of it before and getting it out there.

90% of people who watch hockey or football or whatever cant even skate, let alone hit a puck with a stick, but they are the people that bring money into the sport by buying things like jerseys and whatever, and the athletes are now making millions of dollars a year.

Maybe one day it will be the same for the ski freestyle professionals, i dont know. I certainly hope so as i think an athlete like these guys are just as much athletes as any professional hockey player.

So i guess in terms Just try not to look at this contest like one of skill, freeskier set it up to be a contest of popularity. and thats just the way it goes. and second, hopefully you guys will be making the millions one day.

all skier of the year is, is a popularity contest regardless of your results, and for better or worse Gus' story of coming out is the biggest thing to happen to skiing because of the mass media it reached, how gay is that?! *pun intended* but it is what it is and its a shame, im in the same boat as a lot, Gus can choose to be what he wants, but he's always been a prick and a robotic skier and I respect him for what he chooses to do but you can't hate the player for capitalizing on the media and for his own betterment of his life and taking in a few extra dollars along the way because he knows how to work the system, with compliments of a big PR team and management.

I am a gaper, in fact I just started skiing 3 years ago and cannot even 360 yet. But you do not realize that it's people like me that make it so any ski company can run. If you think ski companies run on park rats, maybe 2% of the ski population, then I'd have to say you're very wrong. And as for is it the right kind of money, you may be very young, but there is not very many types of wrong type of money.

Fans are fans, money is money. Anyways, ya man you are way better at skiing then me. You win. Have a good one dude.

Lol whoops... That was me. I've since DM'd him and apologized for being harsh. But I still think that what I said was legit. I think he is the most versatile freeskier in the world, but now that he's a celeb he doesn't care about what happens in contests, as long as he wins. I don't think it was fair of him to turn the competition into a popularity thing, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore.

If he didn't want the attention he wouldn't 'come out.'

A straight skiier probably can only get that kind of attention if its negative and they kill someone or do some shit like that. I understand the hating because there is nothing other freeskiiers can really do to similarly brand/promote themselves.

People have the right to brand and promote themselves how they want. I'd say the benefits probably outweigh the negatives for him so good for him. The guy I guess was forced to chose between maintaining his popularity on newschoolers vs being himself and gaining a legion of new fans. He chose the later. Good decision Gus!


Nothing wrong with being a 'brand.' Not everyone has a 'brand' either. T Hall does his is being a crazy fun loving pothead. D Wise does too even if his is quiet family guy who got married and had kids super young. Gus has managed to create a 'brand' for himself that appeals to people who don't even ski.

I don't think it was fair of him to turn the competition into a popularity thing, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore.


"Now that he's a celeb he doesn't care about what happens in contests, as long as he wins"....But every year that he has been nominated in 'skier of the year' he has asked his followers to vote for him, what's so different about that this year? He has not changed. He didn't do anything different....if you're angry with him now you should have been angry at him years ago when he first posted about this competition. Tbh I thought his response to you showed his character, If he is such a celeb, who only wants to win, why does he treat his fans/non-fans and fellow skiers so well....

If most people were in his position they would do the exact same thing. It is his job as a pro skier to market himself and shit like this, nobody gets sponsored for rad skiing alone, they get sponsored for good marketing. you could fuckin shred but if nobody knows you and you don't put yourself out there you will never make a living off skiing. and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, nothing is free. professional skiers probably work harder to ski than most people with "real" jobs. If you want to continue traveling to comps, skiing professionally and provide yourself with a high standard of living (i.e. house, car, money for when you get hurt) then this is what you have to do. Its all the same game, just at different levels. ya'll need to lay off this guy

Haha this thread though. Yeh i agree gus has sold out but then who hasnt. The biggest sellouts are the ones who quit their aspirations of making a life as a a skier at the age of about 14 and decided that they would get a proper job. Gus has committed most of life to freeskiing and the only ones who have any reason to call him out for not being core are other ski pros and ski bums. So what hes using his social media for attention hes probably just trying to market himself and make a better living. Its not like hes doing this on ns either its a different target audience on instagram. And as has been said this is SOTY hardly the most core competition out there.
