Airlines and Ski Baggage

Im taking a ski trip out west and will be flying on either delta or spirit airlines. Does anyone know if you are allowed to just carry on your boots(without a bag) aswell as having a small carry on back pack?

You're usually allowed two carry on items so you could put you're boots up above and your bag under your seat.

Do they charge extra for checking skis? I mean more than their normal fee.

They usually consider ski equipment a regular checked bag. But there is usually a 50 pound limit.

Just know Spirit Airlines charges for carry on items - up to $50, so even if you're just carrying on boots, I'm sure they'll be glad to take your money. Most airlines will count a ski bag and a boot bag as only one item, so you don't necessarily need to worry about carrying your boots on.

you NEVER check your boots.. what if they lose them? if you have custom liners and work done, id definitely carry those puppies on.

So ive heard, also looks like spirit airlines is ridiculously cheap like 125 for michigan denver round trip.. but 130 for baggage.. its actually cheaper to take a delta flight

Look at southwest too. They don't show up in search aggregators like kayak or Expedia so you need to check their website but the two free checked bags frequently makes SW the cheapest option for flying with gear.

Most airlines will let you carry on boots (I always do) and not count them as a seperate piece... attach them to your backpack. That said, airlines these days are starting to weigh even your carry on so there's a chance you might get charged but not too likely. Also, as said earlier in the thread most airlines will allow you to check your boots seperately from your skis for no additional charge but only do that if you're not planning on skiing the 1st or 2nd day after you arrive cause losing them sucks. Definitely keep your ski bag under 50 lbs if at all possible otherwise they start charging you for overweight/oversize and thats when your baggage fees get pricey $$$.

Thanks! first time traveling alone so i dont want any hiccups. I think ill be taking united airlines, they alow ski boot bag and ski bag as one package deal for 25 wich is super nice, other airlines like spirit airlines have super cheap tickets but charge alot for baggage and even 35 for carryons, as a 16 year old i dont have that money! Ill be out at copper moutain january 20 to 24 if anyone wants to ride :D

Yep, Always carry your boots. Worst case scenario you have to rent skis.

If the airline gives you pushback, remove sneakers and wear your ski boots thru the terminal and right onto the plane. Not sure if this is a gaper move or totally pro

I have a oakley backpack with straps on the back for carrying skis/boards and ive strapped my boots on the back of it and it was fine

jeez lucky, i fly quit often with my dad for his work to france and sometimes if they are nice they will charge nothing.. but it happens less and less now days.

how did you get no charge? were you going to pay at the gate?

Southwest counts a ski bag and a boot bag as one checked bag.

Or he might not have checked any other bags. The first two bags are free on southwest plus they count boot bag and ski bag as one so you can fly boot bag, ski bag, and duffel all for free. It's the only way to roll.

Carry on the boots always!!!!!! If they give you shit, step outta line and wear them onto the plane and either check your shoes or shove them into your carryon. Nothing is worse than losing you boots. The airlines will pay for a rental if they lose your ski bag, but rental boots suck ze ballsacks

The TSA sucks I hate that whole dept. apparently an avy shovel isn't allowed in a carry on backpack. Had to double back to check in line to check my carry on bag, which cost $25 so united can get fhucked as well. Barely made my flight. Shovels? Seriously? Wouldn't want people to dig into anything like why the tsa should be abolished /rant

Spend $40 on boot bag. Even better spend $40 on a boot helmet bag (the 50 liter one from Dakine is ballin!). Why:

-If you lose your boots you are fucked. Demo skis you can deal with and they might even be sicker than your skis. Rental boots are downright painful. Grabbing new boots with the money from Delta is not a 20 minute task like it is to replace skis.

-Boots and helmets take 80% of your useful packing space and about a third of your weight. Carry them in a boot/helmet bag with a book and such and you can put all your clothes in your ski bag and still come in way less than 50 pounds. It's easily carry on size. I take 2 pair and it's less than 50 with all my layers and outerwear. I have my carry on backpack and drop my ski bag off at the counter. Easy to carry, easy to travel happy.

-If you want to fill the 50 liter bag, you could definitely put your outerwear, boots, helmet, goggles, gloves, and socks in the bag. AKA, if you show up on day 1 of your 3 day ski trip and your ski bag doesn't show up, you go to the Delta counter and work out delivery/payment for lost items (I've been written a $600 check when I explained that without my gear my trip was pointless, my gear showed up 2 days later and I got $600), and in the meantime you have everything you need to ski except for a pair of demo skis.

Well thought out ski luggage is well worth the money and time, and it's super useful for moving or lugging you boots back and forth from the mountain on a daily basis too.

if they try to weigh your carry on or tell you that you can't bring your boots with you, just toss your regular shoes in your carryon (assuming they are low profile shoes) and walk through the airport and onto the plane in your ski boots. they won't really be able to say anything then
