Why do we have down voting?

it creates negative energy.

For example: a video that has 77 (or whatever) straight up votes, then a random hater who down votes it just to be funny, what's the point?

If it's not a good content post then don't vote, and if it's killer people can vote... Why can't it be that simple?

you mean why do we show the votes? Because the downvotes are for a formula to calculate ranking/karma and shit, so there's a good reason for them

I know but 99% of the down votes on content are either haters or kids who want their own content to have a better shot at getting photo/ video of the day. It's not accurate at all. How does a video that gets let's say 200 up votes, have a down vote? It's not because it's not good, because obviously it is. It's because people on here are trolls and try to ruin people's photos by their anonymous down votes

kids who want their own content to get a better shot at getting voted photo/video of the day get flagged by us (and banned and their content ultimately will not get potd) seeing as We check downvotes and stuff. if a kid downvotes every other photo other than his own so he has a better shot you best believe he's getting a warning/banned.

As for your other pointSome people don't have the same opinion and there will always be haters, deal with it.

It's like the drop hating the bunch, their videos get a metric fuckton of upvotes but these guys don't like it. Do I agree? no. but they're entitled to their opinions and can voice them with a down vote. After all, who are you to say what's accurate or not? Can you see into the mind of everyone else???

It doesn't ruin anything imo, people need to have tougher skin on the internet lol

NS has turned into a shitty place to post edits anyways. Unless you're an orange name, you're not getting a lot of veiws. If you're going to post something, you just have to say fuck the haters, and accept the inevitable down votes by the 13 year old kid who posted his dope as shit season edit. Or somehow get an orange name by being an "industry leader". Someone really needs to create a new skiing website and start over.

the same shit happens on youtube, vimeo, etc..

dont be a vagina and throw a piss party because your season edit didnt make VOTD..if its really that good of a video it will make votd. Theres gonna be random downvoters no matter what. Just get over it and focus on making better content if you want to make potd, votd.

I like and hate it.

On one hand it's nice because you get feedback for your stuff. I like writing and like when people give me feedback on that but at the same time, if I just want to post a photo or video it's kind of shitty... sometimes I could go without people telling me how much I suck at skiing or how unprofessional my photos are haha. Like, it gets too critical sometimes in my opinion. Like for someone who is just trying to ski, it's a little much.

I mean you can put a photo on instagram and not worry about it but idk this is NS. So part of me likes putting stuff up but it also sucks because I don't post things to get feedback. I'm not trying to make banger edits or take professional photos. I'm just skiing and I'm not looking for judgement on how I do things... if that makes sense?

So like it sucks when you're just doing it for the hell of doing it and people tell you no, thats wrong, or thats bad(downvotes). So that's why I've refrained from putting stuff up. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong but it adds a degree of seriousness to something not so serious and i don't know... I'm not really about that.


Like just this past week, I heard the words "that doesn't get you views" from someone on this site... implying the biggest reason they do what they do is to get views/votes. And tbh thats really fucking lame. Do it cause you want to, not so you can get the approval of others.

inb4 i'm a pussy/ butthurt.

Then what are you complaining about? You just proved that you dont have to be in the industry or have an orange name for it to make votd. It really just comes down to voting and what else dropped in that day. Sure your edit might be dope..but if it dropped the same day as a tall t truday or something from the hoodcrew or totally trevor it prolly isnt gonna make votd bc all the traffic is going to go to the videos that have a solid following.

The system isn't flawed, its all based around the community.

Well I'm sorry you feel that way.

The downvotes help us rank videos, and they all go through an algorithm which blunts the impact of random downvotes immensely. The ranking system works.

As for getting views without being an orangename - where is better to do this? I'd love to hear where you're posting your edits and is doing better. perhaps we can learn from there.

Many have tried to make new sites, and sure maybe one of these days there will be a better place. I doubt it though, because we've got a great thing going here and even though a few people get upset their vids don't do better - the vast majority do very well. Our monetization programs have been a game changer for a lot of smaller video producers, and we're constantly improving and expanding on them.

You know I get downvotes on my shit too, right? I know how much it can hurt... those two downvotes even with more than a hundred up just burn your soul.

It really does help ranking though, and when people don't like what I put out I want them to be able to tune it down vs. the other cool shit out there instead of me just being able to slam my shit in your face and demand you think its awesome.

I definitely think it's good in some cases. Like for everyone who is trying to make a career out of this, it's good. Yeah it sucks getting downvotes but it's better to know if what you're doing works or doesn't work. For me, I'm gonna keep posting shitty iphone photos even though I get a lot of downvotes because... well I can lol. But for the professionals(if thats the right word) who rely on this type feedback I would imagine it's awesome. You get a group of people together who understand whole thing the best and you get them to rate your stuff. That's gotta be good on them, isn't it?

It sucks when you see chronic downvoting though. Like it's happened to me and theres a few members who really aren't that bad and they just constantly get downved because of dumb stuff. I kind of feel bad but at the same time forums are forums so theres that. And usually it's NSG so that makes it even more irrelevant lol. I haven't seen downvoting like that in news, photos or videos though. So Im curious to see if that is actually a thing.

I've gotten a few messages from mods about people getting banned from downvoting all my stuff so they definitely do take care of it. You might just need to point it out! I wish we could see where the votes were coming from just so you could tell. But yeah, for a member like you, that fucking sucks. Where as I'm just here for shits and giggles(sort of kind of not really though).

It sucks. People suck. It's not really the site but rather how people are in general. People get butthurt if they disagree with you. I changed my name and icon one time and suddenly my karma went up lol and I stopped getting downvoted. As soon as I changed it back to Mingg my karma went down again and I started geting downvotes on every single post. Literally every post.

If people down bomb, they get punished. But its not against the rules to consistently downvote something that someone posts, it just means they 'dont like it' which is fine. If people want to be douche bags we cant do much about it. This has been an issue for me the past 10 years dude, its just how it is.

I actually use the voting system in pictures and videos to get the most out of my time. The high voted not by orange names will always yield better results. Downvotes media tend to be lame or fake.

In forums, I can gauge the support of the community reflecting a certain post. If one person is claiming a pro is an asshole with many downvotes; its a troll and the post will be removed soon. A response to one of my post I deem offensive will get more or less attention to the the attention his post generated.

In big, I use it as a credibility tool. It blows when it turns into harassment. Knowing Doug and the NS team, they wont let NS fall apart.

Down votes don't do anything to karma FYI

Really it's a system that is meant to be used for all posts, good or bad. The best way to counter act down votes on something you like is to upvote it. It doesn't change the thread like reddit, its just a rating that doesn't effect anything but the rating of the post and the rating of the thread.
