Filming my boys this season-need advice

Really depends on what kind of footage you want an quality.

Sure you could go with a gopro but its very shakey unless you have a very steady arm or a small electric gimbal.

You could also go the route of a dslr and could pic up a gh2 or a canon t2i for pretty cheap and a kit lens would do the job and it leaves you open to upgrades in the future and you're able to take pictures as well. For a stabilizer, you could build your own fig rig out of pvc. It's pretty simple to build one.

I personally would pick up a dslr of some sorts (I didnt put a nikon option since im not familiar with them)

I have been spending some time researching a go pro and a DSLR. The problem is that I know absolutely nothing about camera equipment. I will most definitely be building a fig rig for either or. I think I need to do some more research. With the go Pro I am at least a little familiar, but the camera option of a DSLR is inviting.

actually a pole/handle is enough to stabillize a gopro, it's not too difficult haha.

if you wanna go for a dslr, I'd recommend grabbing a gh2 with a kit lens and you should be good for a while!

I agree with the DSLR route. I bought a DSLR a year or two ago and I am so happy with it. I wish I had gotten it earlier. I would recommend a Panasonic or a Canon DSLR for video. Nikons Suck. Some options would be the T2i, T3i or the GH2. If you're looking to spend more I would get the GH3. A fig rig would be a good idea as shaky footage makes me want to puke. If your going to get audio I would not cheap out. Get a Rode Video Mic Pro and nothing below that. Hope I helped!

I have owned both a gopro and dslr. I would recomend the dslr, it will weight more and be more prone to breakage if not careful. But theres alot more options with the dslr including lens attachments and its fun learning how to film or take quality pictures.
