I Think I Might Try To Grow A Beard

Idk. I've thought about it before, but always end up shaving. Never given it a proper chance. Interested to see what it would look like, even if it sucks.

I think this might be time to give it a chance. I needed didn't shave and went into work pretty scraggled today. Was like "I should def shave when I get home". But then I had an epiphany. Figure we're going into winter and it'll be cold, might as well see what the hype is about and give the beard life a shot.

Anybody want to join me in the quest? (pink names especially)

I'm trying to grow a beard and it's so fucked how hard it is. My facial hair grows fucking fast up uptil a point then wont grow at all.

you never know until you try

I made a few attempts this summer and decided beards aren't for me.
first of all my hair is brown and I'm part of the ginge beard club so it looked kind of off
also my moustache didn't completely connect with the rest of my beard so I had to grow it long like cat whiskers to fill in the hole
and lastly it was a pain it the ass to drink everything. you can't just wipe liquid off a beard, it has to be absorbed or dry up

Yeah, didn't have much for pictures at the ready but figured id give you something.

Hopefully it doesnt just get abandoned because of patchyness/itchiness. Im taking the next week off and hoping it magically looks decent for when i come back to work so nobody hassles me about it. We dont open till the 12th so i got time though i think.

i've grown out my facial hair a few times for up to 2 months previously. i'm currently at a little over two months now... haven't shaved since 9/20, so i'm officially at the longest my beard has ever been, which is 3/4 of an inch. it's a fun process growing it out and seeing how it looks. i really want to shave it off though... i told myself i'd go until 1/1/2016, which will be 105 days.

Don't think too hard about it man. Just let it grow and see what happens, no other way. And at some point you're gonna think you're trimming or shaving it properly and then you'll fuckitup! But that's the only way to learn how it works.

I'm lucky (or unlucky) and I can grow a beard basically overnight. I've had and shaved several beards in my short life. When I was learning to trim I read lots of tips and still managed to fuckitip several times.

That's what it's gonna take. Every time is a learning experience. Don't feel too bad if you shave it, you can always start over.

Everyone will have an opinion on how good or not good it looks so stop listening now. I mean I can grow a fuckin beard and I still get opinions for and against constantly.

Been growing my beard for the past like 6 months or so ever since graduating from high school. Beard is very solid at this point and it has tons of perks.

What I've learned so far:
-The first week to a month will be hard. Just commit and be determined and you'll be fine. It will itch for a couple weeks, but that phase ends so don't get disappointed. It also probably won't look good for like 2 months or so, depending on what you're going for, so again, just stay committed.
-Wash your beard/facial hair like 3 times a week with shampoo at max. Your skin produces natural oils that help strengthen hair and increases growth. Washing everyday gets rid of said oil. Just run water through it whenever you shower.
-Get used to people asking you about it and asking to touch it, it just happens.
- After a few months, or whenever your mustache starts to grow in, make sure you keep it trimmed around your mouth. You don't want the hairs to go over your upper lip or too far down the sides. It's gross for you and for girls you're kissing. If you don't keep it trimmed around the mouth, sides especially, you might have your mustache hair in the corners of your mouth. No bueno. You don't have to trim that often. Just like once or twice a month for your mustache. I've only trimmed the whole beard once since growing.
-If you want, beard oil is really nice to keep the hair moisturized and healthy. It's nice to keep it from being too unruly as you can form it.
-Most importantly, just let it grow. It's a big time commitment as well as life adjustment. It sounds dumb, but after a while, it becomes more than just face pube hair stuff. It becomes a part of your life. People will know you and remember you by your beard.
-A good measure if you're thinking about shaving. Never shave off impulse. You'll hate yourself afterwards. For every month you've had the beard, take one day to think about it if you really want to shave it. So me, at this point, would take 6 days to think about shaving.

I'd say give it a go and see what happens, you can always shave if it's not your thing. I've been growing beards on and off for about 5 years now. I've had them long (below neck) and (obviously) shorter variants.

Can share a bit of advice from personal experience:

Let the beard grow for 5-6 weeks before considering trimming/shaping/removal.

After 2-3 weeks of growing your hairs start to curl and will scratch your skin, this is the itchy faze and probably where most potential beards die. If you manage to stay strong for a week or two then your skin will get used to it, the itchyness should lessen considerably. There isn't really much to assist you through this, just keep it going.

Genetics and age seem to play a big part in growing a beard, I'm 31 now but didn't really see good beard growth until my mid 20's. I'm also pretty lucky to have a beard that has good coverage, but still suffer from weak growth in certain areas but it's getting better. Nothing you can do here unfortunately, just wait and see what your beard looks like eventually. (in my opinion asymmetric, patchy bears don't look too great)

Once it has grown a bit, remember to keep it clean by washing it like you would your hair. I'd also recommend keeping your mustache trimmed slightly above the lip so that it doesn't inhibit your ability to eat in a tidy manner.

Growing a beard will drastically change your appearance. Expect reactions from co-workers, family, friends, girlfriends etc. (can't please everyone) some will react positively of course, remain vigilant and imagine the possibilities.

a few pros and cons I can think of.

Good stuff:
- best first, requires little upkeep, once a week is plenty. Saves time in the morning
- natural facemask, insulates well and is windproof. Frozen or soggy skimasks are a thing of the past.
- gets complimented quite regularly
- stroking your own beard is quite a nice feeling

Less good stuff:
- If you think loads of women will be walking up to you wanting to stroke your beard you'd probably be wrong (or maybe I'm just in the wrong place).
- getting food stuck in it can be quite embarrassing.

I say go for the beard man... I grew one for close to a full year with only minor trimming. I'd say just go for the full face beard and just trim the neck hair and trim the strays it will look good. I am full on the beard train now a days. I just think I look better with a beard. (Now picture was taken 4 days ago)

Mine grows in full, but gets super pube like after showers haha.

Make sure you keep enough neck hair from the start if you plan on growing it out longer. It'll make it look fuller.

good advice from the longer posts and of course Bibby. OP seems like nothing is stopping you like concerns from work, girls, family etc, so go for it and enjoy it. Wash with snowy face shots and use moisturizing conditioner daily, shampoo rarely.

My baby cousin uses just for men and it makes him look like he grew a manly beard. You wouldn't know it wasn't real if he didn't tell you or you didn't already know his beard is weird. It works well enough that he has been employed a school teacher for years now and they still don't know he is a baby.

That's when you just gotta let it do it's thing man. I mean clean up any stray awkwardly long hairs, but for the most part let it flourish. The longer it get's the more full it looks. I have a full on bald spot(about the size of a thumb nail) where I cut off a chunk of skin with my razor that will never grow back, but I still let it grow over... lol I'm going to see how big my beard can get again. This time I'm letting it grow for longer. Last time it was pretty damn close to a full year I let it grow before cutting the majority of it off (gave it a major trim for my Fiancee for her birthday. She likes it now and would rather me with it than without, just as long as it doesn't get too big she said lol).



Trust me though if you stop shaving your facial hair you will save a lot of money on razors(if you use razors instead of trimmers).

it probably would be fine if I just left it. seems like most peoples fill in if there's decent growth. idk prolly just gonna be a pussy and hack it.
and I rock the dollar store razors.theyre like 10 cents a piece. I feel like the ones that get advertised are unreasonably priced and totally not worth it unless you have money to throw away.

the winter is the perfect time for me to rock one. if I cut it maybe ill start growing it earlier in tbe fall next year so its decent by the time my hill opens.

sucks to suck but I have no beard game and I guess im afraid of commitment

Just push through the itchy faze and the rest is just time. Don't trim that shit. Just grow it out long as fuck and clean it up when you get it as long as you want.

Now there are tons of people selling creams and lotions and shit....fuck that noise ( only fake hipster lumber itches do that shit....real men use bar oil, hydronic fluid, etc). Just treat it like the hair on your head. Wash with Shampoo and conditioner sometimes to soften that shit up.

I've had a beard for a number of years now (usually keep it trimmed, but starting to let it go a bit more right now) and once you let it go for a bit, it's not itchy at all, regardless of length. Tough it out for a bit and you'll be good to go.

You'll never know what it could be unless you try. Just go for it man.

Make a deal with yourself that you'll let it grow for 3 months. If you still don't like it after that, then shave it, no big deal. You just really have to push through the first month or so. Yeah, you'll usually have a shit beard and look like pubes have broke out on your face, but just push through. You have to find out what you'll look like with one.

And like you said, winter is the best time to grow one. Don't pussy out man; stick to it.

I figured it was like people posting a facebook status that they quit smoking today. and that has a 1000% success rate so thought itd help with my motivation.
