Cliff Notes: Read the bold/underlined text.
I haven't been very active in posting on here but I check the media & arts forum almost daily, reading and learning from everyone else's posts. I want to be more active on here from now on and I hope this is a good starting point.
I think all of us Newschoolers members here in this forum more or less have the same goals/intentions. It's a common theme in our ski community to film our friends and ourselves progressing on skis and editing our videos to make them entertaining and watchable enough for everyone else to enjoy. I, along with everyone else that is active in this forum wants to learn to film and edit videos at a higher level, whether it is through asking questions, answering questions, reading others' critiques (as harsh as some may be), or watching everyone else's edits.
I believe all of us have the same goal in creating and sharing an edit, to grab the attention of as many people as possible. Yes of course, it is rewarding and fulfilling on your own to watch your finished product, but you probably want to share it with people and gain a little bit of recognition. That’s the goal for me at least, to share with others, and have them enjoy it or be inspired by it.
I've got two questions for everyone on here:
1. What is your motivation/goal for creating video edits?
Ex: recognition, inspire others, self-reward (maybe you don't care to share your videos with anyone), impressing the girl, .....
2. What do you want to improve in your filming/editing most right now?
Ex: learning/using correct settings when filming, editing transitions, planning out shots for the video before going out, titles/animations during editing, .....the more specific the better for everyone!
I figure answering these questions is good for two reasons. It will give everyone a quick chance to reflect on what they actually want from their videos and it'll show what people of all skill levels are working to improve upon.
I would love to hear feedback from people of all skill levels from amateurs to professionals here on NS!
I am curious to hear what everyone’s responses are and hope many of you are interested in this thread too.

I will kick it off:
1. My main motivation for filming/editing videos is to create something entertaining for people to watch and to showcase how much fun my friends and I have doing whatever it is we're doing - skiing, watersports, camping…. And of course it’s a longer term goal for my friends and I to become recognized for putting out consistently good content. As an added bonus, about once every couple months, it is really fun to go back and re-watch some of my older edits both for fun and to learn.
2. Currently looking to improve the diversity of shots I use in my edits (different tripod angles, close ups, etc.), expand/better my use of the glidecam (as in approaching the subject coming from a different angle or something like that), shooting better b-roll and incorporating that into my edits, and developing a better workflow, organization wise, during editing because I feel like I'm sometimes inefficient with my time.

I saw this in the poorboyz office when I did my brief stint there and it really stuck. All I want to do is to make dope shit with my friends.

Sound design/editing to music is one thing I really wanna improve. That coupled with editing/transitions in general really.
Always lots of stuff to learn hahaha

1) What my goals are:
This is a big question. I guess my goals are to continue to progress in regular filmmaking, commercial filmmaking and action sports (not just skiing).I want to go to college for filmmaking and then proceed to continue my production company with commercials and at the same time be making backcountry and urban films. I want to create films with story and not just 'montages' like many ski films these days. I love Teton Gravity's style of filming and storytelling.
2) What I want to get better at:
I really want and need to get better at sound design, lighting, pre-production, storytelling, composition, "glidecam steadiness", variation in shots, transitions, editing, color correction, color grading, directing.....
So basically everything haha

My goals:
It started as a simple goal: I saw Eye Trip and decided I wanted to do ski videos. While filming/editing ski stuff, video became my passion, so now I also try to build a portfolio and make contacts so that I can enventually live from it (or at least get a few awesome years where I can travel a lot and get paid to film outdoor stuff). I found myself really interested not only in ski cinematography but also anything travel/outdoor related. The job offers and opportunities I get are getting more and more interesting as I progress so I'll just keep pushing until I reach my goals.
Technical aspect I wanna work on:
I always try to get the best possible quality with my equipment. I look at what I do and ask myself how does this compare to the shots we see in the "pro" movies and how can I make my shots look better.
