Jaw surgery rant

I had double jaw surgery w/ bone graft 10 days ago. This recovery blows. I have to sleep sitting upright, I & have to have a no-chew diet for another 9 weeks. I feel dumb as fuck all the time, everything is exhausting, eating sucks because I can't feel my lips. I FUCKING DROOL CONSTANTLY, and I'd love to keep the food I'm try to eat actually in my goddamn mouth and not all over me.

Oh, and I have this army-vet surgeon that is of the opinion that I need to tough out all the pain and just take 3 extra strength acetaminophen every 4 hours,(he said "that's what I've done for years, but my liver is probably shot, lol") Am I crazy for not agreeing w/ this treatment? I had percocet (325/5, fucking weak) for the first 7 days, but I've had to hoard them so I can use them to fall asleep. I asked for a refill as was made to feel like a drug addict. at least I live in WA, I'm going to the pot store to buy some 500ml ganj chocolate milk tomorrow, that should zonk me.

My friend had 2 planar fractures and didn't walk for 7 months, hearing that put me in perspective. anybody got worse surgery recovery stories? Hearing other recovery stories has been helping make me feel not so pissed at my situation.

I broke my jaw clean in half too, and yes it does suck.

All I would dream about was solid food, but at least I was given two large bottles of liquid codeine to get through it. My folks also bought me a top-of-the-line blender so I could blend up Chipotle burritos. Andersen's Pea Soup is not bad either. Make sure to binge on Ensure or you will lose a ton of weight.

Your first meal once you recover will be the most amazing meal of your life, treat yourself.

"the pain is unbearable. I cannot sleep and i cannot even eat because of the pain. This is absolutely awful. I need help, is there anything else you can give me for the pain?"

just be persistent. go to another surgeon or your family doctor if need be. you heal quicker if your body is dealing with less stress.


I had my TMJ reconstructed a few years back and that actually didnt suck too bad. My surgeon overprescribed me painkillers and xanax and muscle relaxants. It also helped that my roommate worked at the nicest restaurant in town and would bring home soups and other foods that we could throw in the magic bullet and tasted great (steak patotoes and au jus actually works well ahaha). But yeah, i drank lots of smoothies, shakes, blended chili, mashed potatoes, stewed and blended fruits etc.

I got over it. so will you. Just gotta deal with it now.

I didn't break it, I had a pretty bad underbite. I had maxillofacial jaw surgery to correct a 13mm displacement from a normal bite. I've been told I needed this surgery since I was 10. Had to wait until I was done growing to do it. It's another odd part of all this, I chose to put myself through it. I've had a fair amount of injuries from accidents, it feels different knowing I put myself here by choice.

I got a ninja blender, and my gf works as a broker to food vendors for Costco, so she brings home tons of awesome samples. My mom is a health nut, so I have a ton of other pastas, stews, and soups. I'm eating as much as I can, I've still lost 15lbs in 12 days. I'm tryin to stay on top of it. But ensure is a good idea, I'll pickup some of that.

Clam chowder is another good one. Full fat, full flavor. A quart should be around 2500kcals. Good enough for a whole day typically

I had open heart surgery at the tender age of 14. Those guys had me up and walking a little under 12 hours after. That hurt like no other. They also had to do x ray's so they would put a board underneath me, and it was agony. The most painful thing though was that I had to have a pacer put it, and then when they went to take it out, it had grown into the muscle. They yanked on the wires and it felt like my intestines were being ripped out. Imagine having that feeling that your stomach has on a rollercoaster when you drop, but ten fold. and have it go on for another 3 hours after that. Worst experience I've ever had.

Not a jaw injury, but a rather annoying one. My brother got shot in the eye with a BB gun in June. He had to sleep upright for 2 weeks, and couldn't walk (except to use the bathroom) for 4. He was cleared to resume normal activity a few weeks ago. He couldn't see for a few months either. Luckily the BB bounce. d off his eye so he has no permanent damage. But he had to take eyedrops thay felt like battery acid. And it changed the color of his Iris.

I broke my jaw last year after getting kicked in the face playing pick up soccer.I had an alliquid diet for 6 weeks and couldn't speak for 4, then I could mumble but not fully use my jaw. Protein shakes and malts will be your friend. I gained 12 lbs over 6 weeks vecause I was taking in so much calories and nurtientz. I had 4 a day, sometimes 3. Had to sleep upright for a couple weeks until the pain was gone. It sucks dude.

I got sucker punched in the face and snapped my lower left mandible in half. sucked so bad. had to get a titanium plate inserted to hold it together and was wired shut for 6 weeks..... lost 30 pounds in that time.... like someone said previously binge on ensure.... go gurts and chocolate milk are packed full of calories too..... have a good recovery OP, good luck!

There is no greater pain than skull pain. I feel for your pain.

Just take time to remember what being in constant pain is like so you can really appreciate being healthy. You can get through it man.
