GUY FUCKED UP MOUNTING MY SKIS AND NOW IM PISSED

Alright so a guy I know at school has his dad who is ¨certified¨ for mounting skis and stuff like that. I payed him to mount 2015 Look Pivot 12 bindings on my 2014 4frnt switchblades that have been previously mounted with different bindings. He messed up on a few things. :(

1. He didn't fill in the old screw holes
2. He mounted both toe bindings not center on the ski, not front or back but side to side. The toes of the bindings are each about 5 mm to the left from center.
3. He didn't smooth out the rim of residue formed from the old bindings screws

How bad is it that the binding placement is a little messed up?

How bad is it that the rim of residue is still there?

And in order to fill the holes that are under the current bindings, you will need to take the bindings off. Then remount them. Can you use the same holes?

And to make the bindings center (Side to Side) they will need to be mounted again but won't be able to be center (Front and Back) on the ski. And will result in 3 binding mountings on the ski (that's a lot of holes) which isn't good.

So what should I do? Make him buy me new skis?


Please help and give me your opinions, I can't afford new skis.

You can take the bindings off, and plug the holes. Then smooth out the volcanoes. Then re-screw the bindings back into the skis, being careful not to over tighten and strip the holes.

How badly are they off center? Did he use a jig, or free-hand?

Unfortunately, that kind of thing happens when you mount at home sometimes. It sucks, but that's why you take shit in to a shop.

I am pretty sure he used a jig because I just realized both the toe and heal pieces are equally off center by about 4 millimeters.

Lesson learned: don't let some random dude touch your skis, and always talk to the person who mounts your skis about binding placement, ect.

it stinks man. You defiantly want to plug the previous binding holes otherwise water will get in your core

The resin can be sanded off but you may not be able to remount at center since the old and new holes might be too close together

Yeah, I talked to a few ski technicians from ski shops and they said I should probably get new skis. :( Unless I want my twin tips to be way back mounted, which would suck.

Id say it would be possible to remount them at center using helicoils. You drill an overlapping hole where they are supposed to be and then put the helicoils in and use those. That'd take some serious skill and even then would more than likely not end up working. That really sucks though man!

Not good! 5mm isn't really enough to redrill and re-mount. As has been said, plugging the holes and remounting with helicoils might work, but with it being so close, it might not, it's pretty risky. As you've said, the ski will then be drilled 3 times, and with 2 of the hole positions being so close you're going to end up with a weak point.

The rim of the residue presumably means the bindings are not sitting totally flush with the ski? And if the old holes aren't plugged then water will easily get in and very quickly your ski will b ruined.

You will notice while you're skiing if the toe pieces aren't central. I'm assuming the back pieces are? In that case, to set the DINs, he's put a boot in, thought 'hey that looks fine at that angle' and carried on. Or he just hasn't put a boot in. Bad. To be honest, 5mm is quite a bit off, so if each the toe and heel pieces are mounted straight (so will look slightly offset), he's probably had to force the boot in a little. Have you tried clipping in?

In my opinion, your skis are doomed. If you can get new skis out of it, then awesome!

This is a probably the best corse of action to potentially save the skis. Take them to a shop and talk to the Tech about them doing this for you.

If you paid way to much for a shop to mount them, this likely wouldn't have happened, and if it did, they would have given you new skis.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I think i'm buying a pair of 2014 4frnt wises hq demo. Still really upset though, the switchblades are sweet.
