Doc.stompenomicsYo, just after seeing the interview of ian with the dude from GMA and some of the facebook comments by the public, i couldnt stop thinking that crashes like that must be the only way to push skiing and especially the movies to the general public?

It looks like these movies and skiers only get attention when theres a huge crash in the mix. It would be rad to see skiers like ian get attention for just stomping a massive line rather than having to crash to do it!
Why dont the general public get hyped anyway on ski movies? Whats boring about hitting a huge bc pillow line?

Maybe this crash was one of the best things about the movie in terms of its promotion?

In regards to the picture comments, I hate when Non skiers/ Groomer skiers say shit like "Easily preventable" Ian is a professional Big mountain skier, you can't avoid that which you can't see. he knew damn well what he was doing in the fall when he pulled his airbag so he wouldn't get killed if he hit some rocks or ice on the way down. Unless you're an expert on the situation keep your mouth shut.

Its always best to just stay away from the cesspools that are comment sections, but they do provide some laughs over how lame some people are.

I think it got airplay because its someone getting pretty fucked up and that's what people like to see, especially the general public. Not to mention, the internet allows just about every living thing with speaking capabilities to voice their opinions, which allows for plenty of arm-chair skiing experts that live in Alabama or something that haven't skied in a while/don't even ski to point out where he went wrong, where he should have went right, where he should have zigged when he zagged, etc.

People like watching people get hurt/die + mainstream media promotion = ratings. That's why I think gnarly lines wont get airplay on the news. People don't want to watch that, they cant criticize someone for doing something correctly and riding away safe.

Crashes have always made obscure or extreme sports more approachable to the general population. While not everyone understands what it takes to get into (or out of) crazy situations (big mountain lines, urban rails, etc), everyone loves a good crash.

There have been times when my parents or room mates had company over and I was watching ski movies or bmx movies and when the crash segment comes on, all of a sudden everyone stops playing cards or whatever they were doing and were groaning or laughing or whatever at the crashes. Ultimately they were then paying attention to a sport they wouldn't have otherwise.

Would it be great if people appreciated it when someone stomped a huge line or gnarly rail or whatever, but it's the crashes that people love.

everything has to be BIGGER and more EXTREME than the last time. MORE AMPLITUUUDE.
so that action sports athletes can risk their life/well being for peanuts, while the sponsors get to shove their product down everyones throats and profit, because the general public doesn't give a fuck about stomping a huge line or killing it with style.
normies just want to see some "kooky kid" fall down a mountain and say "hah what an idiot!". that show "science of stupid" is the fucking worst for that. they steal youtube videos of people trying doubles and then make fun of them for crashing and proclaim it a stupid idea
