Yale is exploding

I don't know if you guys have been keeping up with Yale right now, but basically the administration and the main student government basically is blatantly ignoring issues of equality when it comes to skin color, but putting out tremendous support for other issues such as when someone drew a swastika on the pavement in one of the quads. One of my friends goes there and said that most of the African American and Asian Professors have announced they are leaving at the end of the semester, because they aren't supported by the University. There are people in the quads protesting and stuff its pretty wild. I can't believe that one of the worlds most prestigious schools could be so intolerant still.

Yes. A faculty member wrote a email that had a lot of valid points basically telling schools to trust their students will make the correct decisions when doing things that may offend someone. And she got tons of shit for it because shes insensitive.

That's obviously a really stupid thing to say, but it doesn't change the fact that these students are getting really upset over something really small. It's a massive overreaction to the point where it seems like the students are actively trying to find something to feel upset over, just for the sake of being upset.

my friend said that there was a party run by a Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the student government and there was a bouncer who was denying all of the black girls entrance and making racist comments towards them. I would say thats some pretty fucked up shit to feel at a place that's supposed to be your home where you can thrive intellectually.

interesting article, isn't the whole point that modern civil rights has less to do with overarching racial issues and more to do removing the inherent bias that we we as society come with ingrained? Not that I agree with whats going on at Yale, but in general is it not appropriate to say if a costume is offensive to a group of people due to the wearer's ignorance that we as a society should take the initiative to inform?

Any white person in the USA who applies to colleges could cry and claim they are the victims of racism if they get rejected since affirmative action means there is probably a black kid in that school who got in with worse grades and test scores just because they are black while the white person with better grades got rejected.


That is just an example but if you allow for people to be this oversensitive about racism prepare to deal with all the racism that white people have to deal with. (No it doesn't exist in all actuality Im not trying to say whites are racially persecuted but again super sensitivity means that black people should be charged with hate crimes anytime they say anything bad about white people if that is the standard you hold caucasians to.

Hahaha, Morgan Freeman did not mean we should stop talking about racism, he meant we should stop taking about RACE, as in we should eliminate the concept of race from our society because it does absolutely nothing positive. If we stopped talking about racism then there is no way we could end the myth of race. If MLK had stopped talking about racism I doubt the civil rights movement would have accomplished as much as it did so quickly. It's ok to discuss injustices, but we need to stop perpetuating that race makes us different from one another. What Morgan Freeman is saying is we need to stop using someones race as an attribute of that person or an appropriate description of that person.

I never said I feel racism on a daily basis. I'm as white as can be; I'm just willing to admit that I, as a white person, have never had to face institutional or widespread social racism against me and thus don't have the perspective or experience to comment so broadly about it or talk about it like it's no big deal. I don't disagree that oversensitivity can be an issue. In this case it very well may be. But I think that racism today is alive and well, to the point that blanket dismissals of specific issues are ridiculous. Each deserves consideration and reflection. All I was pointing out was that white males experience much less racism than other groups and probably shouldn't be the ones making such general statements.

What I find weird is that I just did a research paper about schools adopting test-optional admissions policies in my college writing class, talking about how it increases diversity and such, and then this video surfaces. All I can think about is how the protests at Yale reminded me about how the college application process is flawed, especially with the Ivy League schools like Yale. Of course getting into an Ivy League school isn't an indication of how smart a person is because they end up accepting students who come from wealthy families and of course that shows through the bias linked to standardized test scores.

From yale students talking about it "The Intercultural Affairs committee sent the student body an email over Halloween asking us to think about the impact of wearing racist costumes.

This prompted the associate master of Silliman college (one of the residential colleges Yale is sub-divided into) to write her own email to her residential college students telling the that she personally didn't think that the administration should be releasing guidelines on how we should dress ourselves, implying it was brushing on a freedom of speech issue.

Unfortunately, the second email was released during a few days of tense racial discussion, because one of our frats was accused last week of barring black girls from entering a party they were throwing, kicking off general unrest from the minority population over what they believe to be racial discrimination at Yale. The complaints amount to more than just being barred from a party; the party was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The second email consequently incurred a lot of backlash from the student body, some of whom believe the associate master who sent it cares more about some hypothetical threat to free speech than the well-being of blacks and women.

So then on Thursday, the master of Silliman college, the email-writer's husband and the man in charge of the social well-being of the students in Silliman, got into a discussion with students who were in the courtyard chalking messages of support for minority students on the pathways. This conversation turned into an argument quickly, with the students accusing the master of not doing his job by refusing to apologize for defending his wife's email.

That's probably the the least politicized way I can explain what happened.

Personal opinion time --

The associate master's email was in no way dismissive of racial issues, and certainly didn't invite the vitriol now being thrown at the writer.

You've probably seen the video of the Yale student screaming at the master. That was, in my opinion, where things got out of line. The students turned a discussion into a mob, demanding that the master apologize for something that his wife did, and were generally incredibly rude about it. I recall in particular one girl saying "Are you going to apologize? Because if not, I can just leave." You can disagree with the master all you like -- please do -- but when you start cussing the man out in the courtyard, and pretending that the only thing worth hearing from your political opponents is an apology, you've gone too far.

So I suppose the answer to your question is that no, the situation really isn't that ridiculous, but it was dealt with inappropriately."

Also I asked around from some friends who go there this year, and the story is very different then what she told the newspapers. Apparently she contradicting herself in two separate interviews. Apparently at that party black people were there.

That's what it sounded like but I can't confirm it yet

Affermative action exists because of institutional racism that every white person perpetuates and benefits from regardless of their intentions (that's why its called institutional racism). Because the playing field is uneven from birth it's only fair that it be easier for poc to get into college, which it really still isn't because so many poc are caught in a cycle inside of which college for most isn't even considered as an option. If your not trynna read hella long articles peep tha vid it's very informative, it talks about all this stuff, but through the lens of a super unique human experience that has been brother ali's.

People these days complain about the dumbest shit. Its quite narcissistic. The professor is defending free speech as seen in the other video. That girl is extremely disrespectfully and, quite frankly, has missed the point on what higher education is supposed to provide. It isn't really the duty of the college to make people feel comfortable and at home. Those who go to any university should know that the primary purpose is to discuss the differences of others and open dialogue to talk about peoples views (I.E. free speech is not the same thing as agreeing with others speech).

Those students were the ones that decided to respond and go after someone who didn't have the same views as they did. So what? We live in a world where everyone sees things differently. Luckily we live in a country that lets us express our different opinions. She just wants to be the victim and expects an apology when something offensive happens. The me, me, me generation where people have the entitled need to feel good and if you say something that hurts my feelings it is wrong and should be apologized for and never spoken of again so that I can't have my feelings hurt. What? This is what scares me. When we all become too tolerant to speak our minds.

I think this in the conversation is where things start to get people upset. You have a lot of people in America that are blue collar workers working 70 hours a week having trouble making ends meet. They're standing there asking where's my privilege and benefit for being white.

For the most part I do agree that it is easier to be white in today's time, but when you start to make a generalization saying all people are advantage by it I think that's where you start to get in trouble.
