Replying to iRiver H340
I got my iRiver H340 yesterday when I managed to convince the store I got my Zen Xtra from last year that it was faulty. I've only played with it for a day but here's what I think so far:
+ Size: smaller than the iPod but thicker - the size of a deck of cards (20Gb H320 is slightly thinner).
+ Price: £300 (UK), same as a 40Gb iPod
+ No drivers necessary - functions as an external hard drive = drag and drop in XP (unless you want to use ID3-tag nagigation as opposed to directory-structure navigation, in which case a very small, fast and fully XP-integrated program is used)
+ USB host - you can transfer photos straight to the H340 from compatible cameras. It took about 10 minutes to transfer about 50 full resolution images from my D70. The H340 is useless as a photo viewer for files this large, but that's not an issue to me, it's purely for backup so I don't need to buy any new CF cards, ever.
+ Sound quality - noticably better than my Zen Xtra, which I considered as good as the iPod's
- Slow startup time (with 15Gb of music)
- Menus are a bit awkward to use and took a while to understand
- No in-player playlist creation (best feature of the Zen Xtra)
Battery life is stated as 16 hours in the manual, I'll see how that works out as I use it.
Despite these few problems, the player is exactly what I'm looking for just now. The two features of not requiring any drivers/software in XP and being able to backup photos straight from my camera are very nice. Highly recommended. Have a good look the H340 if you're in the market for a player.
