As I promised, here's my AR-15 build post. It was really fun and a great learning experience to put together. I highly recommend building if you plan on getting an AR.
Any questions just ask!

Any recommendations for a good light mount? Have a decent enough budget but am struggling to find something that matches up with my angled foreground and being able to press a button on the left rail
Sick paintball guns guys! Do you usually play at proper courses? My friends and I sometimes will make our own games in the forest out back, like capture the flag.

What's your rail situation? Picatinny, mlock, keymod? I'm all about minimalism so like Odin Works, Arisaka Defense (specifically for keymod with scout light), DD keymod or mlock mount, noveske has a nice keymod mount, vltor has a great qd for Picatinny.
.frenchyI'm about to start a build. don't really know where to start though, and NOT trying to go broke from this. I have someone whos ex-infantry in the states whos gonna build it for me, any help on the cheapest but quality parts would be nice. I'm i nthe military so my state laws don't apply to me, trying to make a badass gun i could also use on deer/coyotes when im out of the army
Mr.PandaFind a blemished strip lower and upper. Anderson lowers are nice and inexpensive but they're no different than the Spikes I paid about $120 for.
Barrel wise you need to look into what you're going to build the AR for.
What Panda said, go blem. I went blem on both upper and lower. Still can't find the blem on the upper, the lower was just a knick in the paint where a punch slipped. I helped my dad put together his ar with blem lower and we can't find the blem.
Get forged receivers. I recommend Aero Precision since they make the ones they sell and their blems are inexpensive.
For barrels you just gotta do a lot of research and narrow it down. The standard 16" is a fine length for everything. I recommend chrome lined. Mine is Green Mountain and is stupid accurate.
Trigger - research, but someone recommended to me alg defense for an affordable but high quality set, also palmetto polished fire control group.
Go gas over piston for affordability and I'm partial to nickel boron bcgs
All the furniture is up to you and your budget.
Also, one of the most convenient things I put on my ar was a badger ordnance tactical latch.

JAHpowOr duracoat if you're doing it by yourself. Magpul flat dark earth ftw
I like all black cuz black guns matter

Sooo is it done yet?
Mr.PandaMy first AR is in Sniper green and my second AR is in Olive Drab cerakote with a "battleworn" finish on it.
The first AR has maybed 1000 rounds down range at most but it's showing some wear in only one spot and that's the brass deflector.
Friend of mine is doing his AR in ice white.
I'd love to do something like this on my AR-10:
When I get it done.
Did you cerakote your OD ar yourself?
Also, I'm currently helping my cousin build 5 80%'s. One down, four to go.
I'd love to get an AR but in Canada AR's are one of the "restricted for no fucking reason" guns so if I got one I could only shoot it at the range.
So I recently got a JR Carbine in 9mm instead that accepts AR15 parts and accessories, real fun little thing, and cheap to shoot.
However, where the hell have you guys found a castle nut wrench to take the butt stock off with? I've been using a centre punch and hammer which is far from ideal.

If you can't find them in-store then there are plenty online. I have two, an armorers wrench to work on the ar and a tapco one to open the beer.

Also, that looks like a fun gun! Too bad Canada sucks tho.
Wish I could edit my last post but figure I'll do a basecoat of OD green and FDE/Khaki with the FDE/Khaki making up most of it. Think like 70/30 FDE to OD. Then hit it with a mix of brown, FDE/Khaki, and OD green with a mesh bag.
Only part that scares me is the optic so I'll probably do it with a Vortex so if I fuck it up I can like drive over it with my truck and send it in for a replacement from them.
Mr.PandaAren't cantaliver mounts supposed to "lean" forward not back?
Also.. Aimpoint or Vortex?
Forward
I mean Aimpoint is higher quality bar none and battle tested, but you'll pay twice as much. Vortex has no questions asked unlimited lifetime warranty. Depends on your budget, but neither is a bad choice whatsoever.

As to the Aimpoint/Vortex comment I know all that. Was curious which Frenchy had.
My current AR only has a Trijicon MRO on it cause I got it on discount as it was a T&E model at one point. AR pistol is getting a Vortex on it.
I always said that building your own is the way to go and anything else is stupid... until I got my first complete DD. I think what i'm shooting for at this point is my 16" (M4V5), the new MK18 and hopefully getting a MK12 soon after. I have optics for the MK18 (T-2/EXPS3) and V5 (Nightforce NXS) but It's gonna be a fortune for the MK12 optic so that's kind of a turn off.
Once I get the Spikes upper I bought from a friend and all the small parts from him my second build inside a year and 3rd overall will be ready to be complete. Went for a 14.5" pinned and welded barrel and tried to go super lightweight with it too.
Will post a parts list if anyone wants and will throw up pics when it's done.

Starting with the "larger" parts so to speak and moving on down:
- Aero Precision forged lower with an integral trigger guard
- Spikes billet upper (bought from a friend)
- Faxon Firearms 14.5" pencil barrel. I think it has a 1:8 twist rate
- B5 Systems SOPMOD Bravo stock (the super light one with no battery storage thing in the stock)
- Midwest Industries 12.25" Gen 3 Keymod rail
- Geissele G2S trigger
- Trijicon MRO from my other rifle will go on this one and my Vortex 3x red dot will go on the currently complete rifle
- Magpul MBUS Pro rear flip sight (also cannibalizing from my current AR)
- Troy Industries fixed front site (HK style rounded sides)
- Standard buffer tube, spring, and buffer
- BCM QD end plate
- Vickers tactical sling
- BCM Gunfighter pistol grip
- standard lower and upper parts kit
- ODIN works extended mag release
- Geissele Airborne charging handle
- SilencerCo Saker Trifecta flash hider (so I can go NFA with a suppressor if I so choose in the future).
- INFORCE weapon light, one of the new ones
- Haley Strategic Keymod Thorntail mount for said weapon light so I don't have the damn thing sitting at the 9 o'clock position where I feel like I have to mangle my wrist to get to it.
Going to need to get the muzzle device pinned and welded to the barrel so I don't have to file for a SBR tax stamp. Basically trying to build an MK18 clone with minor adjustments for myself.
Obviously won't have a PEQ or D-BAL on my gun cause I don't feel like spending that kind of money on something I have no ability to use or need to use.
EDIT:
I think I'll be rattlecan painting it too once it gets put together. FDE, OD, and Coyote Brown probably... I just can't figure out which color I want to be the base coat. I live in WA so LEANING to having the FDE be the base and then have a tad more of the OD and CB show up in the finished product.
EDIT 2:
I also got a NiBO BCG on the cheap. Like $100.

Question for everyone here though.... magazines. I usually go with Magpuls but also really like the aluminum GI mags but I can never fucking find them. Any suggestions on where to look?

Now THAT is an AR! Nice build, that will be fun on the range.
As far as mags go, not sure of a place for aluminum mags. Aren't the standard aluminum ones kinda notorious for bad followers? I've actually not cycled through an aluminum mag, just magpul.

Thanks. Can't wait for it to be done.
When I get them if they don't have MagPul followers in them I go grab some MagPul or ETS followers and drop those in.

My bad mother fathers, I haven't been in this thread in forever. That looks like an epic build!! Only thing I got right now, is that I think i'm going to run an aimpoint on my Mk18. As far as CQB optics go, I've only ever used EO Tech's and I think i'm making the big switch. Thoughts?

I have a friend that swears by AimPoint for one major fact. You can have the dot always on.

EOTECHs turn off after a little bit. Vortex don't but their battery life isn't nearly as good as an Aimpoint. I have a Trijicon MRO and that thing is a tank too.
I've been hearing the MRO's are the bees knees as well, only saw one or two before I moved out of the states. I really enjoyed the torture test video, mainly because it wasn't mine.
I wasn't really impressed by the 512/522 on my work piece so I haven't put it back on since, if I got one it would be a EXPS.
The Aimpoint Comp M5 with a larue absolute co-witness and eventually their flip 3x mag have caught my eye... I'll holler when I pull the trigger.

Post up that new-new when it's done!!!
For sure will. It's going to be beastly IMO. Got my Faxon barrel for like 40% off. Thank you Black Friday sales.
I've been real interested in looking at the EXPS or like a T1 or T2 with a lower third mount but I have the MRO and a spare Vortex Spitfire laying around so swapping around Red Dots makes more sense money-wise.

I definitely feel like it's something you need to run and gun with for a while before you figure out what you really want, unfortunately that's a bunch of money. Based off my thousands of rounds with an EOTech and not being that impressed compared to other things i've shot with friends, i'm looking at the other options.
I'm also taking a hint seeing that SOCOM is slowly weening off EOTech's it appears. I mean shit, a couple years ago it was shocking to hear dudes were rocking Vortex on deployments, but now I hear it's becoming a wide-spread purchase.
For people who are curious about higher end scopes (that might read this thread in the future); I will 100% back Vortex! I have a Nightforce 1-4x24 and the first Vortex I picked up was the Viper.... holy shit. Wild to think that company came into the game and are no-shit competing with Leupold and Nightforce. ...Viper PST Gen II 1-6x24 is $999!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vortex for the price is NEAR impossible to beat.
The Vortex Viper PST as an example the 6-24x50 is just over $1000 comes with a FFP, exposed turrets, ILLUMINATED, has 4 different reticles to choose from, and has a zero stop system.
You want that from NightForce its near $1500. Schmidt or US Optics? Be lucky if it's under $2500.
Vortex also has their lifetime warranty. Damn thing could burn up in a fire and yous end it in and they'll replace it with the same thing you lost or the current model if the other one is discontinued.
I really want one of these for my 6.5 Creedmoor build:
It's like $2500 though at best. And I have a standard Viper in 6-24x50 with a mil dot but not FFP. I need something for my AR10 though and I've been looking at Black Spider Optics. Inexpensive, good glass, and they have a 1-4 scope and the AR10 I want to use to hunt if I so desire and in western WA I doubt I need much more than 4x.
Just ordered a AR9 Pistol. Cant wait for this, should be a fun and CHEAP range toy! With these new binary triggers coming out, a 'almost' full auto for under 1k! Well 1.2k after the SBR stamp.

What binary system are you looking at? I really want to throw a fostech echo in and start dumping mags.
