Backcountry Bag Recommendation

Hey Ns,

I'm hoping you guys would be able to recommend me a good backcountry bag. I have little experience and all that I really know is the heli pro so any recommendations outside of that would be great.

Im going to be using it mostly for slackcountry stuff, just something that will carry my skis, shovel, probe, lunch, water and whatever else. Im not planning on doing any sort of full time touring so weight isnt too much of a concern.

And im looking to spend 250 maximum.

Blackdiamond has some nice minimalist bags, I hate them because of their lack of outside pockets and clip on potential, but for a slackcountry bag they make some good sleek ones.

I rock an Osprey Kode 22 and like it, although the shovel does take up quite a bit of room. Nice little sleeves for probe and shovel handle, and some good pockets in the hip belt! Where i'm from they retail just under 200.

Besides Ortovox bags are also quite solid!

Get an actual backpack manufacturer. Osprey (my bag of choice), Gregory, BD, etc. It will last longer and carry better.

Look for the 25-30L range. Definitely try on anything you'd be using. Look for vertical ski carry, a separate compartment for your probe/shovel/saw, and routing for a winter hydration system if you use one.

Oh, and don't get a bag with open mesh back panel--it'll get crammed full of snow and soak your back. Closed cell is far better.

BD's Avalung series gives you an extra option if you think you'd use it.

Another vote for Osprey bags. I have a Kode 22 as well, and it's a phenomenal little bag. Best customer service in the game.

Again osprey. They're sick. I have the 42 Kode and borrow my dads 32 Kode. Looking to get the 22 Kode for resort days. Just a really good pack and company

I'm not sure what north face bag it is, but my brother has some north face bags. He likes them but I'd still recommend osprey.

Osprey and Millet are good choices for mid sized packs packs ~25-35L or so. Good weight systems and form fitting bits that always feel nice.

BDs & Dakines are OK but more for tiny packs IMO. 20Lish or less for best results.

The bigger you go the more $$ you need to be willing to spend though. My 70L is an Arc'Teryx and I have never regretted that purchase.

I use an fstop tilopa, although, they're pretty pricey and its main use is as a camera bag. If I'm bringing lots of gear (possibly for a shoot) I'll grab a 2nd bag for all the essentials. In this case I normally use an osprey variant
