Trends change but right now i'd say "trap rap" (ex. Gucci Mane, Future, Young Thug, Migos, Rich Homie Quan, Fetty Wap, Chief Keef) is one of the subgenres with the fastest growing popularity.
I think its the next generation of the golden age of gangsta rap (NWA, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang, 2Pac and B.I.G.).
I listened to alot of early gangsta rap in my teens and moved to listening to alot of old school later on. I was big into lyrical hip hop, conscious hip hop and even storytelling hip hop.
Today's artists of this new genre of "trap gangsta rap" are definitively not aiming for great vocabulary or intelligent rhymes. I think most of today's "hot" rappers grew up listening to old school and know that they won't do it better than the legends in that category. Fans are looking for the next new thing in rap. The real part golden age old school rappers couldnt master was flow. They had the lyrics but the flow was still at a very early stage.
Today the game;s standards have changed. The lyrics are now irrelevant, the flow is what these guys are after. The melody. How the words intertwine with the hi-hats and the bass. The melody. Such is why many of these rappers are basically singing on their tracks (Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, Fetty Wap). Autotune is embraced if it can make the flow sound better. The mood has also changed. It used to be about hate, problems and alot of very depressing themes. Im glad today it is more "positive" talking about entrepreurship, boasting about success and repping for the squad. Even if many of the topics are still very negative (violence, drug use and misogyny), I feel the lyrics are "lighter", more positive and most of the time fuckin humorous. I don't want to hear anymore complaining rap. I would even go as far as to say a new subgenre of trap has emerged that i like to label as "motivational trap". The main actors of this movement are Young Dolph and Skippa da Flippa. Camouflaged in metaphors of braggadocious, misogynistic mumble rhymes are powerful messages of individualism, self-discipline, work-ethic, respect and entrepreneurship. Everyone has the opportunity to get up and get the money (or whatever ur chasing); no excuses.

I get why kids like it...To get fucking drunk/stoned with "the boys" and rage but I dont like it that much at all, theres some songs here and there I like but it all sounds the same to me. I prefer hearing rap about the ghetto and the shit that went on in the rappers life, not shit about smoking cali kush, driving ferraris and fucking hoes. Its just not my taste, I prefer older rap. Still theres worse trendy music than the modern rap.

Thank you for this post, couldn't have said it better myself.

Really it's just fun to me. Just like there can be serious movies, there can be serious music with deep rich meaning and emotion. Inversely, fun, simple movies exist too. Most of trap rap is like that to me. Young thug making funny noises just puts me in a good mood, I can't explain it more than that.

Because people in general are insecure about themselves and about life (imo because of so many anti intuitive things like how much we pollute and actually destroy nature with daily actions, for many just eating usually puts more trash in the dump). We like to feel like we belong to something important and 'real'.

Because they have no taste. It's all about production these days, nothing else matters.

Not saying that the production wasn't a huge part of it before, but it's literally everything these days.

I could record the first conversation I have with somebody today, send it to a good producer, if I could get a bunch of radio play, it would be everyone's favorite song for the next week.

Also somebody posted some "song" where the guy was just yelling bullshit. I thought it was a joke, then I heard it blasting from a car at the gas station. I'm not a violent person but damn, Jebus was testing me there.


The party genre in general sucks. "Party rap" "Party country" "Brograss" "Radio rock" and all that shit.

Also pop music in general.

It's okay to get a pop song stuck in your head since they play fucking everywhere, but if you think that shit is actually great music and you're out of high school, I feel bad for you son.

There is just no attempt in that kind of music to even make good rap, it sounds like they released the verse on the first try just to make money out of it.
