DeepskierHeads up the first paragraph is all hipster and deep so skip if you want.
We live in a new world so I was hoping for some new input. Do you ever get like really deep thoughts or in a deep mood for like months at the end of the summer I was watching Bojack horseman till 5 every morning at it got me thinking about life and shit anyway I started thinking about where life is going. Like sometimes i hear my friends talk how they are going to grow up and be such great photographers and they really want to move and im just like shut the fuck up no one cares you can set goals but have a plan because guess how many photographers there are and how hard it is to make a career good luck living in new york at 18 on the other side of the country than any of your friends with no money or college degree.
So what do you think the ideal ski bum life is I was thinking about getting a first car and going for something old and fixing it up like an old Mercedes or Volkswagen van or bus type thing my friend is getting an 89 bmw and the other is all most fixing up a Studebaker lark But I was thinking I kinda wish my life was just a little more like that 70s show where we have a tight group of friends in a small town and no body cared you could do anything you wanted but after high school I was going to take a year off with my friend lukas and just live in his van and go resort to resort like TC and rob huel and just be ski bums so any advice on how to be a good ski bum like Pary and the traveling circus Crew? What car what resort what to do what to buy what to save when to start and end? ect.
Idk man. Imo, there's a way to make just about everything work. Just because they want to be photographers does not mean it necessarily has to be some traditional forum of the job. There are lots of ways to make a living out there.
Really what it comes down to is figuring out what you want, and being a little creative to find the means of making that not only happen, but be a situation where you're in some sense financially stable.
As far as you, I wouldn't worry too much about the specific vehicle in terms of spending too much money on something just because of what it is. Especially if you're going down a route that could potentially be expensive without the highest earning potential. Van is the way to roll though if you're going to be living in it.
There are some NSers who have done that for long periods. One of my friends lives out of his VW for 4 months in the summer out west, stopping at various places along the way to sell outdoor gear, then disappears back into the mountains.
There are really an endless amount of ways to make it through life. Some stuff you get lucky and some great options or ideas fall into your lap, other stuff you gotta just brainstorm something, or keep making changes until you find something you like.
If you want to do it just do it. Don't let it be something you just talk about. "Hey I'm going to do this_____" and then you never really do it. I hate hearing that shit. Everyone is going to do all this stuff but really it's just an idea, a dream. They never make any effort, even basic minimal effort to make it happen.
Even if your vehicle sucks, you're cold, you're poor, the resort staff confiscates your hot plate and spaghetti, and you realize this isn't your jam, at the very least you'll leave with some experience, a new perspective, and a good story.
Life's to short to live it boring.
