How about Humanism? or equalism.. The basic thought behind feminism is great, but modern feminists have construed the role of feminism.. I most modern countries you will actually find that men don't have the same opportunities compared to women.. The danish HPV-vaccine is a great example.. Girls get it for free, boys have to pay for it.. A vaccine that prevents all kinds of cancers (testicular cancer among others).. I believe that girls in the Great Britain receive economic support for choosing to study as an engineer just because of the fact that there are more men in that field.. I think we have to remember that we don't need more women engineers we just need more engineers.. We are equal and therefore we should not support one sex more than we do the other...

Menism isn't really a thing.. If you want an opposition to feminism look at something like Men's rights movement(MRM). Feminists generally don't accept argument made by people from the MRM make. They are quick to call anyone who opposes feminism "whiney" or "misogynistic"... Many feminists are also being criticized for being racist/sexist towards white men.

Although you're on the right track, your views are pretty skewed. First, feminism isn't a big deal. You don't have to be a radical lesbian activist to be a "modern feminist." I consider myself a feminist and I'm a straight white male and nobody's ever told me that I'm a feminist with a negative connotation - that is, I'm not in anyone's face about it. That being said, I'll take an opportunity like this one to spread my knowledge.

Second, feminism does not push for 100% equality between the genders, as many people think it does. It is instead about equity. Men and women deserve different treatment in many cases. An obvious case is in medicine: If men and women had to pay for their prostate exams but got free abortions, that would be equality. But men can't get abortions and women don't have prostates so that wouldn't make any sense, would it? Equity would mean each gender gets financial assistance with their gender specific medicinal needs.

About your engineers example in Great Britain... It is actually because we need more women engineers. And we need more women more than we just need more engineers. GIrls are turned away from math and science degrees due to a cultural stigma against girls in that field and for being smart. GB has recognized that discrimination and enacted that to help fight that discrimination. Men are already pushed towards math and science so they don't need that assistance. This is equity.

Things like that happen all the time for women and minorities... cough Affirmative Action cough.

So when you say "We are equal and therefore we should not support one sex more than we do the other", you have to ask yourself, who are we actually favoring? Because last time I checked, women are terribly oppressed in America and could use a helping hand.

If you look at the new statistics that came out women under 35 make the same or in some cases more than men on average. I think there's been a drastic shift in the last 5-10 years, so all of us on NS in that age group don't see what these older people are talking about.

There was a thread on Feminism a few days ago, but it got removed. In that thread I mentioned that the equality that women are fighting for is not one of equal ability but of equal moral worth. We're going to be on the same side on this one, but I think it is important to get clearer on the argument.

Equal moral worth (aka intrinsic value or dignity) is the end goal of feminism: to be given the same opportunity as men since we are both autonomous rational beings. This is different from equal ability (like your prostate/abortion argument shows) since men and women aren't physically able to do the same things sometimes. It is completely right to speak of equality but only in terms of moral worth and not in ability. Equal moral worth allows each gender to take care of their own needs in their own way because they each should be given the opportunity for a healthy life.

We will always need more engineers (and the like) but I don't know if we specifically need more women engineers. Don't we want the best engineers to rise to the top, regardless of their gender? Women aren't better than men at engineering or vice versa. There are stupid women, stupid men, incredibly brilliant women, incredibly brilliant men and everything in between. What we definitely do need is the door to engineering be more open to women, which in turn means giving them the same opportunities/encouragement to be engineers that men are given. Right now, as you note, they are culturally steered down a different path which is a shame. The downside to affirmative action is that it doesn't address the problem at its source (the cultural steering) but simply injects women/minorities into the middle of the problem and hopes that it solves itself. That's not right either.

Haha... You do know it's a virus right? Holy fuck you're stupid dude... Both my parents are doctors so I KNOW that you are wrong.. You really don't have a fucking clue.. Theres is nothing that the vaccine does differently for women.. The HPV vaccine helps both genders equally and therefore should not only be free for one of them...

I agree on most of all this. I'm in support of equity, but my example with the HPV vaccine is not an example of equity. The HPV is equally beneficial for both sexes and therefore it should be free for both sexes or equally priced.

Women can often offer different views on engineering problems that may be overlooked by men. Girls often just think differently than guys do and for engineering, which is driven by knowledge of conceptions, this is a big deal. Also, when a gender or identity is a small minority in a class or field of study, they experience a lot more pressure than the majority to perform well as they feel as though they are a representative of their identity. Although this has its advantages, it is overall bad. I am in my third year of my undergrad as a mechanical engineer and have interned for two years at a engineering lab so I have a fair amount of experience with this.

Engineering would be better off with more women. It's not just a feminism thing, but a scientific thing as well.

Also, I'm frankly shocked you would say "Don't we want the best engineers to rise to the top, regardless of their gender?" Is that not the same as, say, "don't we want the best students to rise to the top, regardless of their (insert identity group here)?". I know that you know the problem with that question...

Virtually all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV. Providing free HPV vaccines for women would theoretically prevent every cervical cancer case.

In the United States, high-risk HPV types cause approximately 3 percent of all cancer cases among women and 2 percent of all cancer cases among men.

I don't think anyone but radical feminists are in favor of them. You don't need to make up a dumb name for yourself that will just piss off a lot of people.

You have some learning to do if you don't think women are oppressed.. If they weren't, there wouldn't be any need for any sort of feminism. I use "terribly" as a comparative term. Compared to men (who aren't oppressed) and to what far too many people think, they are terribly oppressed. But yes, there are plenty of other groups that are far worse off.
