Soldering iron for base welds +K

I want to get a soldering iron to do base welds. Recommendations on a model and/or where to buy? Thanks

what do you mean "base welds?"

a soldering iron is really only used for sticking together copper wires.

Fixing core shots on skis. Petex won't hold well when the damage goes to the core so they need base weld material. Soldering irons are a common method of melting said material, but it is my understanding that it has to be a special type of soldering iron that isn't as hot as normal soldering irons.

ohhhh i see. i was under the impression that you were trying to weld metal with a soldering iron.

^nope, the material used is "metal grip" but I don't think it's actually metal

so if you are planning one trying this out on your own skis with no experience i would say DO NOT FUCKING DO THIS MAN.

this it the easiest way to fuck up your skis and burn your bases and core. you dont want that take it to a shop and have it professionally don man.

if you have experience though, thats a pretty decent looking gun its what i would buy and the price point looks solid

I disagree wholeheartedly. If you haven't done this before definitely try it on your skis. The worst that can happen is you leave some burn marks on your core or melt through to the core. Neither of which matters at all and can easily be remedied. A fun learning experience.

The opposite is true, ptex holds better on deeper cuts and wont hold in well on shallow cuts. In both situations metal grip helps out greatly and is seen as better than just using straight ptex. Metal grip is more or less ptex with additives (or whatever) to give it a better hold as melted plastic typically doesn't have glue like properties, or a very strong hold. A soldering iron is definitely the easiest way to do it, temp is obviously important, but as long as it doesnt' burn and you unplug it before it gets too hot it will be fine. The one you listed seems like a safe bet but you could just pick up a 25-30 watt soldering iron from a regular store for under $20 if you wish to save money.

Couldn't you use an epoxy?

I generally let my bases go to hell but I feel like if your ptex keeps ripping out that's a good option.

Get a nice 2 part epoxy. If done right, that shit will be solid. Might have to grind down the surface a bit to get it flush.

I've been using a butane soldering iron with a wide flat tip for the past 6 years, with p-tex ribbons and metalgrip. It works fine.
