Riding pow skis in the park

I was just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages of riding powder skis in the park are. I see more and more people riding wide skis in the park and it looks very fun and playful. The only thing i can really think of is that it would make you spin slower.

and when i say powder skis i mean like at least over 105 underfoot

Think it depends on your skillz. Ya they're heavier not too mention usually more expensive, but there was an edit up last winter of a kid absolutely slayin hood on Pettitors soooo.....do it, you wont.

they are better for butters and more forgiving on the landings, i ride 120 underfoot everywhere and i dont feel that they make me spin much slower than regular park skis

I broke my joysticks first day last season and had no money so I ski'd my 15 days of park last year on 172 bacons (2011 back when they were 115 underfoot). It was tough getting started, especially switchups and anything on rails. But for trannys and jumps it was pretty fun. I picked up some chronics for this year and I'm excited to get back on some park skis and see if my skills were developed/changed since last season on fatties

they work well for nose/tailpresses, but switchups, pretzels and that kind of stuff doesnt feel good (i ski big mtn 80% of the time and in the park mostly do jumps, maybe im not the best guy to answer this)

i live riding mine in the park. they aren't as good on jumps but i like them a lot on rails way butterier and they just ride smoother

A lot of people are riding skis 105+ in the park. Karl (Kartel 106), some K2 athletes (shreditor 112) and Forster Meeks (Surface one life/outsider: 112/109)

Honestly it is preference, Ive skied some park on some skis closer to 120mm. But if you want to do it all in the park (rails and jumps) Id suggest something less than 115.

I've dragged my Hellbents into the park a number of times. It's like riding a yacht on rails - stable, balanced, heavy and forgiving. Pretty fun. Jumps, on the other hand, are kinda sketchy with massive swing weight and unstable landings (keep in mind that Bents are about as soft and rockered as they come). Fun for tossing slow floaty rotations and that's about it.

I always felt that they wouldn't be as forgiving on the landings, because you don't sink into the snow as much.

That being said, pow sticks in the park are super fun

i feel like its harder to catch my edges when over/under rotating with fat skis

Pow skis are super fun in the park...or anywhere for that matter. I rode a pair of Moment Night Trains (123 underfoot I believe) last season as an almost daily park / all mtn ski. Keep in mind this was on a tiny Michigan resort too. They're obviously not as nimble but I center mounted mine & they were still pretty easy to toss around if you're a strong skier.
Really fun if your style on rails incorporates a lot of surface swaps, 50/50s, blunts etc...
Spark notes: fat skis are the shit. I have a hard time buying anything under 100 underfoot anymore

Yeah i ride my 126 magic js in the park from time to time and they are really fun on jumps butters etc. but are sketchy on rails but super fun for spring skiing as well.

It definitely would make it hard for rails. Doing a switchup with pow skis vs park skis is a pretty big difference.

I rode my rossi s7s a bunch this season in Australia. An unexpectedly fun activity I discovered is drifting cat tracks. Flat base, lots of rocker and no edges. Can't recommend enough. Fun on jumps in the park but heeavy. I don't really ride rails so can't comment there.

Nick Mcnutt rides his pow skis in the park and actually slays. His Bentchetlers have this new funky system on the tip and tail that are incredible for butters.

As a fellow hellbent user I agree 100%. Forget about doing 4s and higher, but endless butters and the ability to get creative style wise makes up for it. After looking at this thread I'm gonna be torn again about whether to get some cheaper Al Dentes or if I go for one of my favorite skis to ride the bacons.

I hate the feeling of wide skis in the park. They usually have a lot of rocker, so there's much less stability on jumps and at speed, and they're sluggish on swaps and spins. There's a reason you see almost all pros on traditional narrow, cambered skis.

user *cummings* let me borrow a pair of pow skis for a rail jam once cause I broke my el rays in half first trick of the day. Its kinda weird popping up but its was alright.

(the trick was a switch disaster 270 onto a FD, and I caught the kink on the underfoot of my outside foot and it broke right in half.)

The gypsy would not be best for a pow park ski. They are very sluggish and slow on hardpack. I wanted a pair but was glad I didn't get them after I demoed them. Amazing in pow. Check out the outsider, my one life's were a blast in the park

This. I ride the Surface One Times in a 183 as my primary park ski currently. Think they're around 108? underfoot.....so much fun when you get the hang of them.
