So my girlfriend of a few months wants to learn to ski this winter but I really have no idea how to go about teaching her how to ski. I don't even know if its a good idea. I taught myself to ski in 2010 but I just figured it out. My question is how do you teach a person in a way that allows both of you to have fun. I do not really want to spend an entire day on a bunny hill.
Second, figure out if shes gonna want to ski all season or just a few times. I'd recommend a season rental. No use in buying all brand new stuff the first year. Maybe buy boots and rent skis though. rental boots hurt.) Usually season rentals pay for themselves in 3-4 days of skiing.
Third, hit up the bunny hill for a few runs max just to learn how to stop and get the general idea how to turn. Pizza turns and stuff. I say only a few runs because usually you get like 2 turns in max and that doesn't really teach anything.
Fourth, take her on a lift. Preferably a lift that is slow when you load(detach/high speed rather than older fixed grips where liftys hold the chair back for everyone). Make sure there is an easy way down from that chair. Super wide S turns to start off with. Pizza , french fry, that kind of stuff.
Fifth, don't get frustrated or angry. If you are easily irritated do not do it. If you can handle reverse snow plowing for a day or two then go for it. Generally after 2-3 actual 1 hour lessons a skier will be good to go. If she's decently coordinated it should go fine.
I've only had one girlfriend that wasn't a gaper and she still said gaper stuff all the time like just dumb complaints and stuff. But if you find a cute girl that can keep up on snow, thats the true unicorn. Here's your short answer: GET READY TO HATE LIFE. maybe your girl is a go getter, but in some cases, they'll complain even more and try even less because it's YOU teaching them and maybe they aren't ashamed to act like a baby around you. in this case, your girlfriend may benefit much more from taking a lesson where they are less comfortable. Additionally, your girl may be a 9 or 10 right now, but wait until you see her as a gaper. its an image that cannot be erased. I've never had a girlfriend that wasn't a gaper and I've given up on that fantasy. It's a hard choice to make because I've had relationships end because I'm gone all winter, and I've also had a relationship where we we're on the snow together, but I felt held back so I hope you find a way to have a great time this season on the snow and with your girlfriend as well.I really hope this helps, as the gaper/significant other-complex is actually fairly complicated.
if it matters enough to you, break up with her and find a girl who shreds. because no matter how much they practice unless its without you and every day its likely that you will never be able to really shred with them.
but if you dont care that she is as good as you id just say be super positive and dont force her to do stuff shes not ready to do as this will take the fun out of it. that being said you have to pressure her and as she gets more confident she'll not only learn quicker but she'll start to appreciate how fun it is.
finally i would teach her the basics yourself and then hire a great instructor who will push her to teach her the more difficult fundamentals

Don't even try. That's always a disaster. Buy her lessons.
If you're confident she'll enjoy it, go out and get her the best gear you can afford to.
If she's having a horrible time due to terrible gear she will hate it.
Next, get someone else to teach her the fundamentals. Preferably an instructor. This is the super risky time, during which you will get shouted at/dumped if you try and teach her yourself.
As she progresses, you just have to be super patient with them. Really try to avoid getting them accidently WAY out of their depth as it will result in tantrums and shouting and you'll be back dating Palmela Handerson if you're not careful.
You've gotta ride a very fine line between being supportive/helpful and seeming condescending. You'll know when you're on the wrong side of it, trust me.
But stick with it, the first time they ski down a some double black chute or air out a little drop or whatever is pretty satisfying.
Plus, before you know it they'll have a mighty fine physique in a couple of key areas.......................
Firstly....The best thing I did was take her early in the season. This meant the beginner runs were open and not a whole lot else. This meant I wasn't dying to go ski elsewhere on the mountain because there was nowhere else to go.
I got her some good gear (borrowed most of it off my sister)
Stayed patient....This is important. Patient and encouraging.
We had two days.....By the end she was going slowly down easy blues. Not the most exciting but she doesn't hate it so it's somewhere to build from
In the same boat, although i worked out a deal with her that if its a pow day shes getting left at home hahaha. Her sister skis and has boots/skis that fit, so gear wise we should be good to go. dear lord im just hoping she picks it up decently fast haha. Bunny hill for a few runs and then nice big snowplowed S turns and hopefully itll be all g after a few days of that
i taught my gf to snowboard (which i dont do, we just figured it out), and she didn't ski or skate or do anything at the start. 5 years out we're married now, and she's really good, so it is possible
Like most have said, the key is PATIENCE. She won't be able to keep up with you, ski the fun stuff or really do much of anything at the start. You will spend most of your time with your skis off. You've got to be understanding of this, its not her fault, its just part of learning from scratch
My recommendations: get her out as much as she's willing to go, don't take off on her to ski park/pow unless she recommends it, and once she has the basics take her on long cruisy runs. Bunny hills are fine, but getting on and off a lift is always an unnecessary struggle, and when you only get 2 turns in top to bottom that's not much room for improvement. Long cruisy runs give people an opportunity to focus on figuring out how to ski and giving them lots of time for on hill practice, rather than struggling with lifts
i'm not gonna lie, it's a huge investment to make, but if she's worth it than make it. Remember as well, as much as you've gotta be patient, she's gotta have a good attitude, if she doesn't want to progress then she wont
Yea don't really bother....just will cost you time and money and frustration. You will spend your day dicking around watching her fail over and over again trying to get better. She'll want to go into the lodge all the time and leave early. If you go fast one run you will wait 15 minutes at the bottom and then have an impending shit storm of yelling at you
The most important thing you can do is be enthusiastic. I have taken my girlfriend skiing several times, and had to teach her from the get go. When I took her to a big mountain tho, I got her lessons. I have bought her boots, poles, skis and gear(this really helps because girls want to look good, and no one feels cool in rentals and gaper gear). It seems like you are putting a bunch of money into it, but if you want her to like it and want to do it, it takes that kind of effort.
Only being in a few months with this girl though I wouldn't buy her anything cause you will likely be out of the money if you split. Having been with my girlfriend 6 years, its worth every penny.

QFT, this year I purchased a different season pass than my girlfriend by "mistake." Taking your significant other skiing with you regularly is a nightmare if you are not at the same skill level. Skiing together once in awhile can be fun, and sometimes it's nice to take an easy day on the slopes.

3. "how do you teach a person in a way that allows both of you to have fun." its not about both of you having fun, it's about her having fun and retaining something
I hesitantly taught my girlfriend to ski but it worked out. I've been teaching for a while, so I just treated her as a client, not a girlfriend.
Honestly, bring her straight up the hill and scare the shit out of her in, at least, a blue square trail. After that, she will never ask to come to the hill again and you will continue to go skiing for the only reason you are doing it... Having fun with your friend. Trust me it's gonna be my 7 winter with her and it's been this long because I continue to go skiing with my friends every chances I get and she do what she love on her side too.

Honestly, what happened is I wanted her to ski with me so I paid for every thing then we take the chairlift and hit the slope. I had faith in my girlfriend so in any time a thought she will not be able to ski down the hill then she fall going out of the chairlift and I realize it's will be a long day. She hated her day so mine and I realize that we need those day doing stuff with our friend and not be 24 h together. I'm sure you understand watch I mean
I've always had pretty good luck teaching girlfriends to ski. Probably because I'm also an instructor. My biggest advice is to get her a lesson. Before I went through the training skiing was just kind of something I did without much thought going into it. This makes it pretty hard to explain but in ski schools they have a bunch of little tips and things to do that help a lot.
Get her in a lesson. When I had a girlfriend last year she occasionally asked if she could film me since she kinda likes filming and also asked to teach her to ski. Never did any of those and kinda just changed the subject...
