LiteratureI meant to get on the Backland and ran out of time--I need to fix that.

I've heard numerous accounts of the Fischer Vacuum shells exploding on people in cold temps, so I'd be pretty wary of that in a backcountry boot. Plus, with the 100mm last, you've got to have Scarpa feet (or still worse, BD feet) to not fit into that.

Cuff height did feel low, but I'd say it was on par with the TLT6/TLT7 that I'd skied before.

Coming to these lightweight boots from an alpine background, they're all more flimsy feeling and certainly more purpose driven towards the up. I tend to look at that as a challenge to ski them perfectly rather than a drawback.

I've also wondered, the vacuum shells don't get that hot (175 degrees I believe) but that could potentially goober up the Boa system...?

I could share a lot but I'll leave that to the magazines, websites and catalogs. Just some of my thoughts for now:

- Arcteryx had the most interesting new gear with their boot and airbag. Their airbag is much better, safer and practical than the Jetforce.

Airbag market sidenotes: I might write something about next years airbags and whats happening in the airbag market later. Some points for now: ABS is going down and their new design (surface vs volume) will not work because their airbags can fold. Arva had to come up with their own airbag system after they broke with ABS (the guy behind Arva designd the Vario system for ABS) and it has a lot of good thoughts and features behind it but they were in a rush and the system looks flumsy. Ortovox has a solid small and light system. Mammuts new system is just smaller and lighter than their current, still solid. Scott/Alpride is still solid and Scotts new packs look great. Jetforce is the same, still heavy and takes up almost all the pack.

care to elaborate on the arcteryx bag being "better, safer, and more practical" than the jetforce bag? the jetforce seems like a bomber product aside from the hardware hiccup they had late last year. and an in depth airbag market write up would be greatly appreciated.





also. the line skis in real life look way different than what they look like in their catalogue. hate that. and saga was a bit of a dissapointment. whats with all the shiny looking material? looks like a cheap outerwear brand now.

I talked to engineers from all airbag systems this year. Its always difficult to get through the marketing blabla and spitting on other brands systems but when you hear it al and take a step back this is whats going on in a nutshell:

The engineer from Arva designed the Vario system and was stupid enough to hand it over to ABS. They worked together on good terms for a few years but that relation is now over. Both parties needed to come with something new. The Arva system has some great features and is smart designed but IMHO its not a finished product yet but only because some thing look weird. ABS jumped on the surface over volume wagon. All engineers I talked to said that there is something to say about that, in a good way. But ABS executing is stupid. Their airbags have a bigger flat surface next year. More flat airbags. The problem is that they fold. Their current system also does this a bit but its less problematic because the airbags are big. Their new airbags are so thin and wide and not well attached to the backpack that they fold very easy. In my opinion they ruined their product and it might not even be safe. Real proper testing was not possible because the breakup with Arva. Something new had to be designed at both companies real fast with a meh result. I would stay away from both next year.
Ortovox played smart. They worked with ABS systems in their backpacks and quietly worked on their own system. In short: its light, its small, it has a normal airbag and better designed backpacks around it than their current. Solid job, but he its still a new system..?
Scott and Alpride, solid system nothing really new only nicer backpacks. Still light enough to be competitive.
Mammut: everything is lighter and a bit smaller next year. Nothing really fancy but still really solid system.
Than the Jetforce... BD built it quick when there were rumors about arcteryx working on something with a batery. I heard from different sides and parties BD asked to work together but arcteryx declined. BD than said ok we built something ourselfs quicker to be the first. They achieved that by working with existing components. They use a fan instead of an impeller like arcteryx. Again different engineer from different airbag systems told me a fan is not safe enough. Why? Because it would be not powerfull enough to fill the airbag when something is blocking the airbag... likeee snow.....in an avalanche.... I will try to test this soon... The arcteryx engineer told me they tried a fan at first..but it was in no way strong enough and they quickly went to an impeller...
Than their is the Jetforce backpacks + system. Its heavy and you have very little room left for your gear..all that for 1000 euros + it might not be strong enough to deploy when in an avalanche... I wouldt buy it, I wouldnt even use it when someone would give me one..
Than the arcteryx. First this: 1600 euros and only 2000 available next years.. They took their time with development...almost 8 years I believe... No it does not deflate after 3 mins to create an airpocket, but BD has zero test results of that working in real life.. But whats really impressive is that the system is small and even with the smaller size backpack you can actually get shit in the backpack... Offcourse its an arcteryx backpack with all kinds of nice features etc. What they claim about the system is that they can spray water over the system, keep it at minus 30 celcius for a week and after that it still deploys without any problems, 8-10 times... even if it can do half its impressive...

Yeah I'm stoked about the arcteryx, but only because I felt that all engineers from all brands and systems hinted its a solid system and they were impressed. That plus the fact its pretty light and you get a real backpack around it.. Ofcourse its new so you never know but to me it looks solid.

I have zero interests or collaboration with any of these brands. Its just a bunch of stories I heard from all engineers and other brand people i have spoken to on ISPO.
Maybe I will do an indepth preview of all systems and backpacks later but I'm way to busy for that now.. Plus side to the airbag market is that new things are coming and maybe prices go down a bit but dont expect to much.. downside is that systems are designed, built and brought to the market to fast...

haha dw I had a laugh dude. and yeah the ARV86 is going to be a new price point ski for Armada at $399... so just wondering if its gona have the same side cut as the el rey, but instead have the Ar50 side wall and hopefully be more durable.

Curious to hear if anyone here had a chance to ski them at the SIA On-Snow demo. The response to them so far has been seriously awesome. If anyone has the chance to ski them, take em out and let me know what you think.

They are a super light (1680g per boot) alpine boot that still has legit 130 flex (down to 100) and fit that you expect to have in a top performing, comfortable all day boot. They all use the same 98mm last, but it is super anatomic and comfy- nothing like our race boots. McNutt has fully switched over to them, and any one of our athletes that has used Redster in the past will switch once their size is ready (read: Jossi, Durtschi, etc)

The second is called the Al Dente and has an extra layer of 90deg carbon fiber for more torsional stiffness than the E Dollo. It will be available at select retailers.

So you get rid of AR7, PC, and THALL because they are basically the same ski. In favor of ARV 86 and AR8 LE. I get it. Thanks cool, PC was better than AR7 anyways cause race base. They were basically all the same ski. Makes the decision easier on the consumer, its good.

Now you choose to make 2 e dollo's? Forget the name, it's a henrik ski. They are both basically same, regardless of the extra carbon. Whats the point? Was it just for fun because you know a LE henrik ski will sell out no matter what? Why make henrik's skis the new AR7/PC/THALL sameness scenario?

Essentially because there was a lot of people who loved the old ARVti. The new ARV series is a bit more playful than the old metal bomber and since it and the EDollo had the exact same footprint we gave the Al Dente some added stability without the added weight of metal. I don't know if you'll see that in marketing speak anywhere, but that's the reason.

Both are available in 163, 170, 177 and 184. The 86 is 18m @ 177 and 96 is 19m @ 177

Only had the short size (177?) and it was fun. Really worked the hill well. Nothing special on groomed snow but came alive once you got off piste in bumped out steeps.
Skied switch good enough for me. Not the biggest park kid on the block though.

Fun, light and poppy while still being stable. You can feel the added carbon in the ski when loading it up. It feels really light on your foot in the air.

Been skiing JJ Zero for about 2 weeks now off and on. cant wait to get AR8 on my feet. Though I think its going to be in 176 which is a bit of a bummer.
