Ski edits taking a wrong turn

First I want to start out by saying that this post is strictly subjective and reflect only the opinions of myself and a few others who have approached me regarding this topic...

That being said, what in the f*ck is going on with the edits that have started to pop up with in this past year?! The complete lack for any sort of skill with a camera, fake fish eye filters from 90s skate edits, god awful dark-mooded music, absolute shit cut and editing, audio clips from old movies, and filming in qualities that haven't been used since 1992. Now Im not talking about all the iphone filmed edits that plague this site, Im talking about edits from skiers that are on the top of the game. Now I know some of you will say things like "Its artistic and creative" and "edits like these were at the roots of our sport" but I for one am thankful for the technology we have in this day in age, and see no reason to throw it back on any other day than Thursday. And that was just referring to the style of the edits. Would anyone like to explain to me why we are watching edits with music from the Twilight Zone, or the reasons for the random audio clips from characters like elvis or dead presidents? What are your thoughts? I am interested to see what the rest of NS thinks about this topic...

sometimes that stuff works, sometimes it doesn't. education of style is a good example of this with over-editing/ taking good shots and making them look bad.

dark-mooded xanax music aka travis scott/ young thug isn't always the best call either but it all comes down to the vibe you're trying to put out and it's good to have a drama/ horror/ thriller/ halloween stye edit every now and again.

I think the problem is that people start to try and follow a trend, even if its a style that has worked successfully for them in the past, and stick with it instead of changing things up (for example, making standard definition edits with film grains and scratches) That stuff can be cool but it's stupid to keep the exact same film/ editing style with every video you make because things get redundant. At the same time, this doesn't mean you should start over-editing clips or purposefully filming shots shitty to make your video "unique"

An energetic personable vibe should usually be the go to as opposed to trying to force something artistic/ creative, just like your saying. Overall, I don't think this has become as big of a trend or a problem as your making it out to be..

Dude i think its dope the way they are turning, you obviously have no background in skating because alot of these edits are emulating skate type edits like ones done by pyramid country...

skating is super dope so i think this is making skiing a little cooler and less serious, slomo bull shit

i for one think that it works on occasion, but is really bad in most cases. but that said my opinion doesnt and shouldnt matter at all to the guys making those edits. if you dont like them just make like brov1 and dont watch them because they arent going to stop because you think they should its just another trend it will pass and the ski community will be better for them having existed. progress is progress, art is art.

but seriously I think it's fresh to take a break from the current style of production since nobody is being very creative with it. That being said, the style OP is talking about isn't really that creative either since it's been done before in skateboarding and snowboarding. It's just another fad in skiing that's been around for awhile and will probably die out. I have friends who have been doing it for 4 years and they're still going strong, big ups to them for sticking with what they like.

It's cool to branch out with this skate style but I think it's about damn time that us skiers actually create something original for once. Children of the Guan was executed very well, great action shots and some burly hits, but the style is played out in skating. I saw The Golden Age which wasn't necessarily creative in style but the incorporation of a story bigger than skiing made it memorable, just like what superproof did- they are fucking creative.

In the end, skiing is just skiing and you get to choose how you present it to others.

all i can say is variety is good.

if ALL the edits were nothing but horror rap and fisheyes then yes it would suck. but if everything was filmed with $5,000 giros, red cameras and shot in 4k then yeah that would probably suck too. as long as there's a good balance between the two then i don't really car who does what.

Skateboarding and snowboarding have been doing it for years, its the new "cool" thing to do. Just like 3-4 years ago when the DTF style of 7D and a glidecam 2000 was the trend.

It's a trend basically to do scratchy edits. A good filmer always makes a variety of different edits and I think that's what skiing edits lack. Yes, the old stuff can look cool, but you have to do it right and not repetively doing it until the trend dies out, it's a hump and dump type of thing imo.

Amen. It's not old school to film SD fisheye. The dopest skateboarding these days is still being filmed on the VX for a reason. Yall need to step outside of skiing for a minute and realize what's been going on. Take this shit less seriously yo. Watch the baker videos, dime store, bronze, magenta, lurknyc, gx1000 and a lot more. HD is still cool and all but just cause it's a 4k glidecam shot doesnt mean it's good filming. Get out of the skiing bubble!!!

Just because someone prefers HD video doesn't mean that they are taking skiing too seriously. I prefer to just watch the skier and his style in the video. The less distractions that there are (ex: shitty filming, weird effects, crazy low quality) the easier it is to focus on the skier.
That's just how I look at it though.

In some cases it's probably done to partly hide bad filming. It's like making a photo black and white it can easily make a shitty photo good. I think the issue is everyone has really nice camera gear now but they don't really know how to use it well. it's partly probably the digital curse. Because it's so "easy" these days people don't learn the techniques so everyone's footage looks ok but not amazing and pretty similar. What can you do with that footage, make it look even shittier and pretend you meant to do it. of course some will be a trend and people seeing things and wanting to copy but I doubt they would be doing it if they had really well composed good footage.

I think Gavin Rudy said it best in his interview from "The Golden Age",

"Final note to anyone getting into filming: It doesn't matter where you're filming, what your filming with, how well you can edit, etc. All you have to do to make something that people will appreciate is to find a story that needs to be told and find your own way of telling that story. As long as you can make something that has heart and is interesting, the rest will come fine."

Totally Trevor 2 is one of my favorite edits,and it's exactly the things you say you hate. I like it because skiing is a all about fun and goofing around for me not how many spins I can do.

so many people have access to technology now a days and i think that has a lot to do with it. any one can go out and buy an auto focus camera, purchase i movie and make an edit. an original idea like dead quotes or presidents might have been cool for one edit but not for another. these people have no idea on film techniques or editing they just want to put something out there. theres a great example of the old fashioned quote thing you said, it was an edit called "style" i think and he used old fashioned audio and it was in black and white, and it worked really well. you can tell lots of work went into it and some one probably had a knowledge of what they were doing when making it. other people could see it and want to replicate it, but without the know-how they just end up with the crap you were talking about. ill try to find the video and post the link

It's progression through regression. In my opinion I'm not a fan of the majority of ski edits I see. I always feel like everyone is trying to copy everyone. That statement still holds true with the current trend however I am finding it's a lot easier for a filmer to be individual using this style as opposed to using a 4k glidecam.

On the other hand however, it does seem most people are just following a trend and aren't really being individual when it comes to their edits and it shows when you watch their edits.

Totally Trevor is also one of my favorite edits to watch. Though the filming and editing is not the best, they are not putting on needless shitty filters or using dark ugly music. They are having fun and playing up beat music. I am talking about edits such as children of the guan. Dark, heavily filtered, scratched, sorrow mooded edits

COTG had feeling. COTG had a vibe. COTG had a life to it. It wasn't just some lame edit of back to back tricks with no mood/vibe. It is simply artistic. Which also means that it is subjective. A banger edit with no vibe, isnt as good as a descent edit with a great vibe. The best edits have both. You don't hate the life COTG has, you hate it's mood.

I see where you are coming from but you gotta understand that everybody has a deferent creative eye. I myself actually agree with you. However, making an edit ultimately reflects the attitude and creative style of yourself (Or your crew) therefore I like to consider skiing a sport where there really isn't a "wrong way" to make an edit.

I'd far rather watch janky fisheye with 90s infomercial b-roll filler and weird editing than drone shots and 240fps slow mo any day. This whole modern trend towards the most technologically advanced cameras and equipment takes the heart right out of it. Look at any Nine Kings coverage or, more recently, Russ Henshaw's dub to rail. Those videos blow hard, they're all the god damn same stupid dialogue "Oh just wanna do something have fun with friends blah blah" and the same editing style, music, cuts. The skiing is unbelievably top notch but I just can't stand watching those sorts of videos.
