In the past week or so NS went from posting maybe 2-3 times a day to 10-15+ a day. I don't know if posting more brings that much more traffic to the website, but it for sure gives less attention to content that deserves that attention. There's already way too much content on FB, and the fact that I have to click "show more" to see everything that NS has posted in the past couple hours means that a lot of good content doesn't get seen. And there's also a lot less likes and comments on each post.
IMO I think that quality is way better than quantity, and that 3 to 5 posts max a day would be a good thing, like it used to be a couple weeks back.
Quality content is dissapearing way too fast on the Internet these days.

Agreed. If there's a lot of good content coming out then I definitely wanna see it. I think I'd rather see a few posts where there's a bigger appreciation though. There's also been a lot of stuff posted/reposted which is cool for classics & throwbacks but idk I'm not really feelin it.
You guys know your reach and all those stats so you obviously know whats up. If it's working for you keep doing it. Maybe I just spend too much time scrolling through facebook in class hahaha.
No one surfs the ns main page, if you do you're very unique. Unless you choose to follow the page, each person that likes the page sees probably 1-3 posts a day out of 10-15 (this is skewed by friends sharing, etc. You see alot of ns posts because you and your friend follow/share ns stuff) so for the general public more posts = more traffic and really there isn't any effect on individual post traffic, if anything it gives the quality shared content more exposure. Trust us here.

I'm going to address all of you here...
We actually have been trying a dramatically increased posting volume. Dramatic. We've been harvesting the old archives and throwing stuff up to see what sticks. Facebook has been claiming that it won't bombard our users with too much stuff, and that their algorithms are really good at figuring this out.
That being said, we've found there's a line. We can definitely post way too much and then as you said, it can get frustrating especially if its mediocre. However, only posting 3-5 times per day is a terrible idea because we're leaving out tonnes of people that would have liked to see our stuff who don't come on the site all day.
Fredy - Is your problem looking at the NS facebook page, or what is actually coming into your personal feed? Those are two dramatically different things.
So far its looking like posting more is an excellent idea. Traffic is through the roof, and people coming in are very engaged with most of the content. When they don't like it, they just scroll by and it dies off pretty quick. When they do, it really shares out.
What could also be an issue is over the last week we made a major change to the URL structure, which caused us to post a ton of duplicate content. It was a mistake, and its looking like that frustrated some people.

The other thing I'd add to this is a great way to get more quality content is to have our Journalists step their game up. ;)
VinnieFshould stick to posting recent stuff to give it more exposure rather than constantly re-posting old material that everyone's seen.
For people like you, frequent NSers, you might notice this, but we have 100k likes, a ton of people that follow our FB don't have NS accounts and probably go on the site only when they click a link on FB. All of these posts have been doing super well, the social world is crazy dude.

I agree. It would be nice to have the posts with a date, as a little preview. I was happy to see "Tabarnak Pack preseason", only to realized it was 2013's preseason...
I understand it is a good way of getting traffic on the site, but sometimes the titles are misleading.
Mr.BishopWe made some adjustments, and will be posting more recent content, and just highlighting really good stuff from the past.
We'll keep our eyes on it, and you guys take a week or so with the updates and then let us know if you like it better.
I still think you guys post too much, for instance you shared Vincent Prevost and Jacob Hyllengren's edits today, and they got like 10 and 15 likes, which is nothing.
My problem is with the fact that for instance, NS posts 10 times a day, well on my phone I see the first three posts, then I have to click on show more if I want to see the rest. And even then, I've chosen the option "see first". So from what I see and understand, a bunch of good content gets overlooked. And also there's times of the day where good content will get almost no visibility - which is the case with Vincent Prevost edit, for example - he did well on NS, but the FB share didn't get him much more visibility, 'cause it was shared too late during the day.

The point of fb isn't to look at someone's page. It's suppose to come up in your feed.
Do you " follow" ns or whatever the option is? You can like the page but then you can also choose to see all posts or something like that. Do you do that?
But in reality, posting more gives us a huge traffic boost, you guys are the outliers because you go on ns every day and check it constantly.

I was talking about my news feed here. There's a ton of posts that I wouldn't see if I didn't click on "show more". So I guess most people are too lazy to click on " show more ".Anyway if it gives a huge traffic boost to the site then keep posting a lot

NOBODY understands Facebook's algorithms... well maybe except Zuck.
However, my theory is that they stack up a couple of posts which they're unsure about. You may click one, your buddy may click another.... and then some small percentage of our ~110,000 fans see other random ones. If a few of them are deemed popular - then those will be pulled out of that view and rammed into your feed as a separate post.
I think the biggest mistake is to think that we can force something to be popular. Often the stuff that gets 'overlooked' simply wasn't popular with a mass audience. You may have liked it, but even if we only posted that in an entire day - it wouldn't have done any better.
To give you an example of how well our increased posting is doing, look at two months of video views from our Analytics program:
It was right there at the start of October where we implemented the new strategy. Its pretty clear what happened when we did this.
So even though in your mind logically something might be getting 'missed' - overall I can assure you that whatever has traction on FB is getting it and then some with the new strategy... and way more videos overall are getting views.
Now, the REAL problem with FB if you ask me, is its not what I necessarily consider 'good' that gets traction. Its what has more social mass appeal. Decent edits have seemed to do well, but not everything will.
The best thing you can do is encourage anyone involved in a project that you'd like to see get traction to share, comment and like on the Newschoolers post. Even a tiny little bit of signaling from a small group can make a big difference in the visibility.
Facebook fucking sucks for sharing stuff and keeping people up to date.
From experience, unless you pay facebook for a bigger reach, posts don't get too many views compared to page likes and follows and all that. This is on a much smaller scale, obviously, but we have 2.7k likes I think. If we don't pay we see a max reach of like 40 people. Usually if we share it to our personal accounts we have a lot better turnout but why fucking have someone like your page if they ultimately aren't going to see anything?!
And usually it takes a few hours before you start to get a solid reach. So we could post something at noon and only see 10-20 or so views until 7 at night, then all of a sudden we get 10 times that. Which is exactly opposite of instagram. We'll get most of our likes within 3 hours. Then nothing after that. I don't get it, and it really fucks stuff up when you try to give people a heads up about stuff going on that day and they don't even see it until hours later or the next day. So then you get angry phone calls and emails the next day. But even an early morning post won't come up until night or the next day.
We have like 500 followers on Insta and get between 30-70 likes per pic/vid.
We have 2.7k likes on facebook and are lucky to get a reach more than 50 and 10 likes. So fuck you facebook.
I don't understand how facebook works, but it doesn't post to newsfeeds and it doesn't organize it by time whatsoever. Unless you pay for it... but fuck that. I hate facebook.
And this is probably why having so frequent posts does you guys good. People see a post, they like it, they check your actual page to see more and then like everything else. For smaller pages it is absolute ass though, lol. I would imagine that not everyone sees every post of yours either. Some people see post A, some people see post B, etc. But that adds up and works in your favor. I know I only see like one direct post a day, the rest are shares. So it's not really you guys who are flooding newsfeeds, it's the actual viewers/sharers. Which isn't necessarily bad but it definitely helps your reach and all of that.
Alright it makes sense now with a graphic. I guess i just hate the fact that my news feed is full of garbage and that quality content gets lost in a matter of 24 hours if not less nowadays

Does your facebook content usually have things last more than 24 hours?
I actually don't remember the last time a saw something "new" posted by NS on facebook, it has constantly been older edits. It wouldn't be a problem if you labeled them as "throwback posts" or "remember this?" or something similar, but now you guys make everything out to be big news and it pisses me off when i realize i've already seen it plenty of times before.

This post is understandable. But at the end of the day, NS is a business, and increased FB posting = more traffic to the site. Other companies (not related to skiing), like VICE Magazine, repost content as well.
That being said, there is a good point here -- it will get quite confusing when winter really ramps up. How will we be able to distinguish old content from new? Or will the reposting mostly stop?
To those who work on the NS FB, please drop any knowledge. Thank ya!
yes its annoying as hell to get stoked on something you guys post just to click it and realize its old content. Would be allot better if you guys could at least write whats new and old. Most reposts barely gets any likes/comments to so I would think allot of people is annoyed by it and you probably see allot of extra traffic as I'm sure I can't be the only one to click links all the time just to close it right away when I see its old content.
One excample scrolling down your page now, you reposted "one of those days2" and it got 3 likes, then a bit longer down you posted "GoPro: Mickael Bimboes" witch was new and it got 257 likes and 24 shares. Clearly its not only a few active members that is tired of all the reposts ..
steezyjibberThis post is understandable. But at the end of the day, NS is a business, and increased FB posting = more traffic to the site.
The problem is, with this increased amount of posting, especially of old stuff I've seen before, it has caused me to "unlike" the NS facebook page. I have enough pages that I want to see their content, that I don't need it to get pushed away by a year old NS post. When NS was posting new, interesting stuff, and I liked it, I would share it with my friends. Now, they get nothing reposted from me. I understand I'm only one person, but I can't be the only one.

To the two above guys - its the time of the year. In years past, this time between season edit launches and the start of the good season where people can be dropping current edits has simply been dead. So its a lot of older content because the well is super dry right now.
The data is showing us that loads of people are seeming to enjoy getting a fresh look at old content. Everything will change as all the new stuff starts dropping, which will happen any time now.

I'm sorry to hear that!
I can completely understand. What I might recommend is that in about a month or two, check back in. You'll have all fresh new shit popping in your feed when (as mentioned above) all the new content starts dropping. I can completely understand liking and unliking the page depending on the time of the year.

The other thing I'd point out -
If you're an active NSer - part of our core audience - the experience on the website is designed for you. Facebook is much more for the passive NSer, who doesn't come to the site every day. Those people haven't seen a ton of the stuff that has gone about, and perhaps even lack a historical education of what has gone on in our sport.
So in your situation, you might be better off to just pop by the site a few times a day to see whats up vs. just liking us on Facebook.

I'm already seeing changes.
One thing i DO like about the NS facebook page is how you guys actually post the videos. So when I click it, it plays on facebook. I'm following the Freeskier facebook page also, but they links every article and video to their own page, which is slow as fuck and really annoying.

Only some will do that - we have certain videos that we'll post directly to the page after they have lived their life on the site to pick up extra views.
I mean we make $0 off of the videos that play on Facebook, so our video producers don't get any of that cash either.
It used to be that our videos could play directly on FB and have an ad infront of them, but Facebook is retiring that ability fairly soon.

As long as you don't post a "fake" video that just redirects us, i'd be fine with that. Freeskier posts an image that looks exactly like a normal video, with the little play symbol and everything, and then it just takes you to their site. I totally understand why they do it, but it is still really annoying!

ahh, 1st world problems..
Yeah I mean I get your frustration, but remember that if you don't click through to people's sites, then we can't serve ads and NS and Freeskier will go away. Facebook isn't giving anything back to us for this stuff, so its really hurting revenue of brands like ours.
That being said, you need an experience that works. We did a huge amount of work to our video pages this summer to make those mobile pages load faster. We are still doing more, 100% targeted at a good mobile experience.
So ideally, the page loads quick enough that it isn't annoying.

Is it mobile you're talking about or desktop?
Pretty much always on my laptop. I haven't had any loading issues with newschoolers, and I have the whole page whitelisted for adblocking.
The referenced post has been removed.
And a lot of their ads really slow everything down, I remember one that actually had a build in video player. Thats just too much, and now I'm blocking all their ads. Which is unfortunate, because they post a lot of edits I'd like to watch..
Yeah the thing about FB is that you just scroll past it. Its literally microseconds out of your life - so if you aren't into the late night posts then bam - they are gone at the flick of the mouse wheel / finger.
However loads of people that aren't on NS every day get shown stuff that they haven't seen before, and it gives new life to our old content.
Right now the problem is the wells are dry. This is the worst time of the year for content because its right between what everyone had in the can from last season and when everyone has skied enough legit stuff to start putting out the new new.
Any second now the new shit is going to hit, and its going to be all good.
However in the meantime, as Evan said - there are loads of people out there on facebook who haven't seen some of our archival footage, and the ability for someone like you to flick past in half a heartbeat doesn't appear to be ruining anyone's day.
I do get what you're saying though, as the wells are dry right now. We should work on stockpiling more content from the previous season to make it through this.
Best solution?
Go out, film an edit and post that shit! Convince your friends too. :)
