Anonymous Thoughts on Skiing

Been something I've wanted to do for a while; a place for anonymous confessions submitted by anyone (pros, your average joe, and anyone in between) about skiing, good or bad.

I know what you're thinking, "Why don't I just post in the thread instead since NS is like, hella anonymous?"

Well, hate to break it to ya, the internet isn't that anonymous anymore. Regardless, this is going to be a place for you to rant about whatever you want; It can be about anything and everything. What you are stoked on, what you dislike, what you wish you could change about the sport, ect.

I think we need to bring back the classic "ski movie". Due to the internet, there has never been more ski content being pushed out all season long, however the quality and impact this content has gone way down. It's great to see that all these pros that have the opportunity to go out and do their own projects and experiment with different movie themes, but I really miss the old ski movie formula. The kind of movie where you know all the biggest pros are going to be in it, with a heavy opening segment that kicks off the movie, the friends segment, the banger closing segment, all that. I mean, I haven't seen one movie yet this year that follows that formula, and I think that its due to the fact that straight-to-the-internet webisodes and solo projects are taking over. I used to skateboard as a kid before I started skiing, and in recent years I've started watching a lot of skateboarding again, and its made me really miss when skiing had similar movies.

Perhaps part of it has to do with the fact that skiing is no longer progressing quite so rapidly as it was when epic films like TBC, Refresh, EDIAS, etc. were filmed, but that just means we might have to break from the traditional "yearly release" in order to take the time to truly come up with some new, quality content. I mean, didn't FLIP take like 8 years or something to finish one of their "Sorry" skate vids?

I don't think I can go another week without tucking into some serious pow and skiing steeps and keeping my mogul and tree skiing on point.

I think so many Utah skiers have their heads up there ass. They constantly shit on other states snow quality and other states mountains. Then when a Utah resort like Snowbird is mentioned they make the seem shitty joke "No go to vail I heard its bottomless pow all year long." They also have some view that the summit county is the only place to ski in colorado. When places like CB, Silverton, Steamboat and Wolf Creek have some of the best places to ski in the state.
I know this doesn't apply to every Utah skier, I've just seen it too much in my time while reading online stuff about skiing.

I love the bunch, but they piss me off at the same time. Some of the tricks they pull are insane but some are kind of boring and drawn out

i don't like park skiing that much. like it's fun every once in a while but i'd ski alta/snowbird (my home mountain) any day over lapping the park.

and, this is a very unpopular opinion, but that edit that just dropped that got tons of hype, the simple one or Deadkind or something? i didn't like it that much

am i doing this thread right?

Sometimes I find that I just need to be at my local hill. Instead of craving skiing I start to crave an entire ski day, sitting on the lift, waiting in line, going inside, driving to and from the hill, and actually skiing. The fact that the freedom and the stress free day that skiing provides me is probably the biggest high and addiction I have ever felt. And the HUGE thing that erks me is when people compare vertical feet, conditions, location to see wether its "worth it" to ski. Cause to me every single time that I can go somewhere and slap on a pair of skis for any period of time makes my life so much better and so much more complete. There have been countless times when I see pictures of friends or random people taking photos of freezing rain at their mountain saying something like "Another day lost to rain" or "No skiing today".

This may be an east coast skier thing (I'm sorry if its not) cause many of us try and ski no matter the condition for as long as possible and when I see comments like that above from someone who doesn't realize how fortunate they are to be skiing out west or at a major resort it just pisses me off. In the next few years I plan on going to BC and skiing my fucking heart out every single day no matter what the conditions are.

This so much. The ski movies that still do come out are kind of dry due to the lack of stacked pro's that go on to do their own thing.

I think people's attitudes are absolute shit. So many people who are decent at skiing get some mentality that people who arn't so good are excluded or made fun of. In skateboarding, everyone is embraced regardless of their style and skill level for the most part. It seems like much less of an image game. Fuck your image. I've definitely been guilty of this in the past, but if e want our beloved sport to grow, we need to make it a welcoming thing to do with people willing to bring in the next generation. Start being hyped on everyone you see, and you'll have a much better time skiing, you'll get better faster and everyone around you will be having a ton more fun as well. Shop local, go to ski events at your mountain and take time out of your day to teach kids things. There's my brain dump lol. Hyped for the season.

KENDOZERI like skiing more than anything else I have come across in my time on Earth. It is an activity that I think everyone should at least try because of the joy it has brought me. The thing that pisses me off the most with skiing is the d-bags that make it difficult for others to feel comfortable learning how to slide rails and hit jumps. When I was little I got bad vibes from some of the older skiers, it wasn't until I could actually do some shit when they warmed up to me. Havin that experience it has been my goal to be the most approachable skier on the hill and be welcoming to any Jerry's that may be in the park that day. (In general I think park skiing is becoming more friendly since I began in 2002)

One thing I have observed is how the competitive drive varies from skier to skier. Some dudes get all pissed if you do something they can't, or they're stoked for you. Its weird. I think if you fear or envy or hate on other skiers progression you are probably not skiing for the right reasons. (All you Jesper Haters)

I totally get the argument against apropriation of other cultures but i've always found i have one issue that lurks at the back of my mind, that is, where does anti apropriation finish?

Do we simply stop assimilating with other cultures because we are worried that we might cause offense by adopting, or rather re-interpreting part of their culture to meet our own needs? by taking in hip-hop has a staple music scene in the freeski industry are we all guilty of appropriation of black culture?

i get that we need to be careful about being sympathetic in doing so, but surely having some awareness of a different cultures (even if it is just certain imagery) is better than having no knowledge of the culture at all?

I hate (that)...
1. My local resort has awesome features, but noone keeps up on them so by mid january the park is a bunch of rounded jumps and fallen over rails
2. Almost Noone at my local resort wants to ski with me/like i do. Just a bunch of side jumpers and half ass snowboarders who find the easiest rail and only hit that. On occasion there will be a vacationer who knows what the hell thay are doing.
3. The only freestyle skier at my resort is an elitest fuck who hot dogs every rail and is dubbed "best park skier on our hill" yet has 1/3rd the quiver of shit i can do.

I remember going skiing at random places, and people actually wanting to meet the only other skier on the mountain with twin tips. Shit has gotten clicky af as more people have joined the sport ant it has become more popular. Seems skiing has become about crew and other bullshit, and not about meeting homies and having a fucking sick time. Skiings changed man.
