Been something I've wanted to do for a while; a place for anonymous confessions submitted by anyone (pros, your average joe, and anyone in between) about skiing, good or bad.

I know what you're thinking, "Why don't I just post in the thread instead since NS is like, hella anonymous?"

Well, hate to break it to ya, the internet isn't that anonymous anymore. Regardless, this is going to be a place for you to rant about whatever you want; It can be about anything and everything. What you are stoked on, what you dislike, what you wish you could change about the sport, ect.

As an example of what I've had submitted already from a friend (I know this because I asked him to submit something to test the system, not because I can see who posted what)
"I want the ski industry to appreciate the videography side of the sport more than the competition side. Many of the skiers making ""big money"" in relation to the rest of the sport are competition skiers, when really the guys who are pushing the limits in the streets or creating videos that are getting 40,50,000 views influence viewers much more IMO. Much like how youtube pays per view on videos, I think that many more skiers could produce amazig content if their sponsors set up a similiar program. When A sponsored rider creates a movie at the end of the season, the sponsors should compesate them based on the number of views/hits that skiers video receives.

Nothing bothers me more about skiing, at least in southern VT where I ski, than seeing the vast majority of freeskiers/park kids who can't make proper carves, doesn't know how to ski pow, overall has awful form and technique. Yet constantly bash on race kids who are "douches" even though they are 1000000x better skiers than they are (and probably better in the park as well).

I laugh at these kids as I burn them down the hill (on my pow skis, twin tips, or carving skis) because in 5,10 years when they slow down on park skiing because they get old, interests change, etc they will STILL suck at skiing.

Not to mention when I ski out west or at a much harder mountain, I can translate my ability and ski some of the hardest runs in the country pretty dam well...kt22, courbets, etc. Which NONE of those kids could do with any style,form, etc that is if they even had the balls to drop in

I love park riding. But I grew up racing and love ripping carves on groomers as much. It translates well into all of my skiing including park. I can rip trees faster than most of those kids without even thinking about it.

Nothing bothers me more than the kid who started skiing 2 years ago and thinks they're hot shit in the park for throwing a couple 270's here and there and maybe a sloppy 7 yet couldnt ski if their life depended on it.

i mean thats true, but if you lack technical ability you restrict your experience of freeskiing, by limiting your horizons you make skiing far less "free".

Honestly the only thing that bothers me about skiing is that you can only do it in the winter. Yea obviously you need snow and I'll probably get the kids that will be like "Nooo build a summer setup and ski rails." IT isn't even close to the same thing, sure you can practice but I love the feeling on skiing on fresh or nicely groomed snow.

The fact of the matter is this, until freeskiing becomes a lot more popular and ever town has their own state of the art dryslope, we just have to deal with 7-8 months of not being able to do our favorite thing. Which really such to be completely honest.

Except not really... I see so many kids feeling bound to look a certain way and emulate a certain type of skiing or else you suck.. its a toxic thing that is a large characteristic of the skiing environmnet in michigan

Agree with all of this except the pow part. Many skiers on the east don't get that much pow so how would we learn how to ride it properly. I might be a park rat most of the time but if I get the chance to use a pair of skis that I can just rip groomers on like a nice pair Elans or Heads with a aggresive sidecut and a sharp edge I wouldn't turn it down.

so much this holy hell ive been saying this for years. also skiing with bad form is the way to crash bad and get hurt when you are getting onto more difficult terrain. like you cant be skiing big mountain line like a park rat or you will legit die. while freeskiing does mean everyones interpretation should be different theres a certain basic knowledge that you need to have for countless reasons and the ability to adapt your form and maneuver quickly in difficult circumstances is entirely based on your skill as a skier not as a back seat jabronie.

learn to race before ya do anything else kids ya wont regret it

Why are there not more places like snogression? I feel like most east coasters, and midwest skiers, would kill for a place like this near them, Also that would be cool if there were some indoor skiing areas like the ones in the UK. It would be prime if you would be able to ski year round in these and also if it had a nice park setup. These may not have to do with thoughts about skiing, but i guarantee that skiers are thinking about this.

I get that man. But the point is...if someone had a racer background, or at least was able to ski PROPERLY fast and aggressively with good form and technique through moguls, groomers, trees, etc. Someone would have minimal time adjusting to skiing pow. Go watch a park rat ski pow....leaning back like crazy, lets splayed apart, cant turn, goes straight and then stops....quite sad.

man who cares, its all about having fun and enjoying your experience, if you wana ski all "proper" like a racer go ahead, cause that is whats fun for you. there are times when im skiing where i can actually relate more to skateboarding or rollerblading then actually alpine skiing. if your are a 100% rail rat/jib skier you essentially dont have to carve or really "ski" ,in the way you see it, at all.
A lot of the time in the winter i will jib a local skate park, where i skate to get speed, drop into the bowl and hit rails, 1/4 pipes, and rollers. compared to traditional skiing, its basically another sport. and that's what it is, there are so many different ways to ski you cant really call all of them the same name.

Good for you. But at the end of the day, some racers wish they did park, nobody wishes they raced. Plus different techniques, It's like you saying a ski jumper or cross-country skier are technically bad because if they tried slalom skiing they wouldn't be that good. Park skiing is half gymnastics. You just jell because park skiers get all the chicks while racers get all the guys!

Yea man your right...at my home mountain I see race kids crush the park all the time better than probably 85% of the usual parks skiers.

The difference is people with any form of a race background generally are much much better skiers than park rats. I love park riding...but when it comes down to it...if you ski you should know how to properly ski. How can you expect to ever get better or ski a harder mountain/trail/whatever if you have no proper balance, form, etc.

Would you trade in 100 dollar day passes and hour long lift lines for how skiing used to be- handful of people at the mom and pop owned ski area, 5 dollar lift tickets, BUT you had to ski on antique gear.

The pipe in Park City is right next to the race hill. I spent plenty of days there watching racers, wishing I was running gates instead of risking my neck in an icy pipe. "Free" skiers subscribe to the dogma that racing is no fun while never having actually tried it. It is actually very fun.

Are you fucking retarded? I would consider myself a rail rat because growing up in northern Ontario, it's really all we have to ski. Even when hitting rails, learning how to ski properly is 100% the most important thing. It won't really help you once you're on the rail, but it will help you rip into the rail going Mach 10, it will also help you land. You will be a much better rail skier if you learn how to properly ski, as silly as that sounds. Also, you don't need to be in a racing program to be a 'good' skier. Every once in a while take a fast lap down groomers with the homies, carving as hard as you can and jibbing everything in sight, you'd be surprised how fun it is and how fast your skiing will progress.

alright man, i do enjoy getting some carves on the groomer and i agree with you that you do not have to race to be a "good" skier, but there is not a definition for "skiing properly" so you cant say skiing properly is "100% the most important thing". so many people have different styles of skiing and that all comes with experience. having good balance and being able to hit features at faster speeds is something any type skier will learn with practice.

Alright I'll toss in my two cents. As a skier for over 30 years, I have made it my life. I have worked in the winter sport industry for over 20 years and have held almost every job out there. From Wax scrapper bitch at 13 to instructor to Buyer to Corporate R&D. Here is what I have learned. All we are doing is sliding down a hill with shit stuck to our feet. Our industry as a whole has become way too focused on exclusion. I'm a racer or I'm a park rat. He's a gaper or get off my hill. Guess what? We all are in it to smile more. I get it. We all want to feel special or extraordinary. By pigeon holing ourselves we are breaking apart the sport we all love. We are Skiers first and foremost. We all had a first day on skis. We all sucked at one point. We all had an embarrassing parent, jacket or hand me down skis. When did it become OK to look down upon or ridicule people for enjoying the same thing we do. I challenge every single one of us, instead of trying to tear us apart, work to build a stronger community. Tell that first timer that's struggling, that it gets better and to hang in there. Or give some props to that kid who might not have the best rail game but is still out there giving it his all. Sadly Our industry will only grow if we treat each other as a whole rather than fragments.

Elitism is going to destroy our sport. I worked in the industry for about 8 years and what I learned is that programs like freestyle ski academies are slowly going to kill park skiing.

Basically you have these programs that suck money out of rich white parents with the promise of Olympic medals. The problem is that these academies charge insane amounts of money resulting in only the richest kids getting the resources. Also because of the money involved the academies also try to influence park design. This results in people who have no place building and designing parks doing so and limiting their use to only the kids in the program.

Now how does this kill park skiing you ask? Well contrary to popular belief these programs don't actually generate much revenue (despite being extremely costly). It's the passes, the food and bev, the keystone items in the shops that put diesel in the snowcats and keep the lifts spinning. But these programs are becoming bigger and bigger. In other words it's gapers that keep the wheels turning. They buy the passes, they eat at the hill, they ski all the runs, they buy lessons.

So my question is why don't we have programs where we try to be more inclusive and introduce people to park skiing? Why not try to invest into being more inclusive? Try to bring a wider audice to park skiing?

But it's not though. It never was always that way. Shit all you have to do is look at moguls and areals for proof of concept. Incredibly powerful sports in the 70s,80s, and early 90s.
Because of overegulation, high level coaching, and concentration on competitions these sports are basically dead.

You have to care because our sport is on that path. But we can change it.

Most skiers are fucking idiots. I love having skiers to look up to but they make it so hard by being so fucking uneducated. It's not malicious, but their ignorance just hurts sometimes. Nothing bothers me more than the kid who started skiing 2 years ago and thinks they're hot shit in the park for throwing a couple 270's here and there and maybe a sloppy 7 yet couldnt ski if their life depended on it.

I like skiing more than anything else I have come across in my time on Earth. It is an activity that I think everyone should at least try because of the joy it has brought me. The thing that pisses me off the most with skiing is the d-bags that make it difficult for others to feel comfortable learning how to slide rails and hit jumps. When I was little I got bad vibes from some of the older skiers, it wasn't until I could actually do some shit when they warmed up to me. Havin that experience it has been my goal to be the most approachable skier on the hill and be welcoming to any Jerry's that may be in the park that day. (In general I think park skiing is becoming more friendly since I began in 2002)

One thing I have observed is how the competitive drive varies from skier to skier. Some dudes get all pissed if you do something they can't, or they're stoked for you. Its weird. I think if you fear or envy or hate on other skiers progression you are probably not skiing for the right reasons. (All you Jesper Haters)
