The PC movement and oversensitivity

In the light of recent everything, Political correctness (PC) has seen an incredible bump in national recognition as both good and bad. personally I think that while it is always good to be respectful of others, the fact that all of politics and most of pop culture revolves around being politically correct is detrimental to the issues at hand and has led to a culture of extreme over sensitivity. this is a hard topic to look at without straying from political correctness but i am curious to know what NS has to say about PC and the oversensitivity of the millennial generation.

S.J.WWhat if you have a son and he's gay and he ends his life because of these so called jokes? It's not just one joke made by one person. It's the constant outcast by society which makes these kids kill themselves. See how long you can last getting called names ever day before you have a mental break down.


If I do have a child (which is highly unlikely) I hope to raise them to be tough enough to not give a shit about petty insults and to be proud of who they are. I would see it as a huge failure of me as a parent if my kid offed themselves because of mean words. I would have no issue with my kids being gay/straight/whatever other fucking letter they've added to the acronym since last I checked, I would be supportive of them and raise them in a loving environment.

Skimming through this thread, keywords I've noticed is: transgenders, high suicide rate, and mental illness.

And all I want to do is solve the equation: transgender=mental illness=higher suicide rates

I know people being dicks to you on the daily doesn't help, but if you living your whole life being unhappy because you're a boy and think you should be a girl...I mean....

Maybe my opinion stands to evolve. I've never had an issue with people being gay at all, but for some reason you completely lose me and all sympathy once you start undergoing a sex change operation unless you are actually born transgender or whatever

I think that it is it doesn't necessarily have to be negative that's the issue with the word mental illness it has a lot of perceived negative views. A mental illness is a condition that impacts a person's thinking, feeling or mood and may affect his or her ability to relate to others and function on a daily basis.

It sounds to me like being born in the wrong body unless you have the chromosomes to prove it is a feeling and therefore a mental state, there's nothing wrong with having that feeling or wanting to change yourself. But in the since it sounds to me like people feel like they're in the wrong body and they don't like that feeling doesn't mean they need therapy or help they're more than welcome and free to act on those feelings. But this whole issue is people being in different bodies that they're not comfortable with. Maybe I'm missing something but that's how I see it.

If i was so "distraught" about my sex that i was willing to get a sex change, i would just do everybody a favor and kill myself. Ppl like jenner just want to give the finger to society, which he hates. He just wants to piss ppl off because hes angry about not getting attention anymore.

Fair. I was just going by the book, and I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that being transgender isn't considered a mental illness, doctor-wise.

Maybe being transgender itself is not a mental illness, but I would be curious to see the percentage of transgender population that has been diagnosed with a mental illness compared to the total population.

No, I haven't.

There's a big difference between making fun of someone for something they do or say, and making fun of someone for something they are. On NS, the making fun that is done is almost always for things people do or say, which, I agree with you, is fun and perfectly fine, and rarely ever for something a person is.

There's also a big difference between occasionally writing something dumb on the internet and having other people call you on it on the internet, and having people say things to your face in live time, day in, day out.

That IS a thing! I read about it in I believe the Atlantic, years ago... Crazy, definitely UNLESS you are a combat veteran, seeing close friends and guys literally right next to you get blown up and die or get horribly mutilated while you go home alive and healthy I imagine could fuck you up quite a lot. Wouldn't be surprised if a vet decided to have a limb amputated out of sheer guilt that they made it home alive and healthy and are wondering "why me?"
