250rits not ok to be fat, and fat people should feel accordingly bad.
seriously, no one thinks twice about pointing out a drug addicts problem. why should the fatties get special treatment?
brov1In the light of recent everything, Political correctness (PC) has seen an incredible bump in national recognition as both good and bad. personally I think that while it is always good to be respectful of others, the fact that all of politics and most of pop culture revolves around being politically correct is detrimental to the issues at hand and has led to a culture of extreme over sensitivity. this is a hard topic to look at without straying from political correctness but i am curious to know what NS has to say about PC and the oversensitivity of the millennial generation.
DadcoreI think it's because fatness and crime have no direct link. You do see crackheads robbing stores but not fatasses, (although one might be faster than the other)
YoungDaphIt seems like every week there's some new expression of sexuality and gender that people need to take care not to offend. It's getting rather ridiculous. I'm gonna keep talking in my offensive manner and not give a fuck who I piss off because merica

Chron_RabbitCaitlyn Jenner is not a hero.
Peter.the most frustrating part about it for me is when issues like this take the spotlight in things like elections and stuff. why are we worrying about this instead of the millions of other massive issues, like drought in california, war overseas, national debt, etc etc.

S.J.WTo the people having a laugh at trans people.
but if you're in public where your jokes can be overheard by people just think, it takes two seconds and you're not potentially ruining someone's day/night/life for a few cheap laughs.
byuboundI agree with most of your post, though mental illnesses have a much larger part in causing suicides than offensive jokes. Why don't we work on that instead?
However, this last bit is total bs. If your day/night/life is ruined by some stranger's comment you overheard in public, you need to harden up.

WattsTransgender people have a higher rate of suicide and attempted suicide than any other group of people. They are also probably the most ridiculed and misunderstood group of people (if you want evidence, look at the jokes being made in this thread and what group of people they're targeted towards). Seems like the jokes go a pretty far way in causing people to want to end their own lives.
Your thinking is pretty off. Let's try an experiment, tell us all your deepest, most base insecurity about yourself, then the members of NS will all make fun of you for it for, saying the meanest, most horrible things they can possibly think of. My prediction would be that it would hurt you to hear this, and that you wouldn't feel like you're the one in the wrong, that it's your fault for being too sensitive, and that you need to just "harden up."

S.J.WI would be in interested in seeing some research or studies done on mental illness among the LGBT community vs the social outcasting and which one is the bigger cause of suicide. But it's not just one comment, imagine if every few days you heard "what a weirdo, you have a dick you're a guy no matter what" or whatever. People deal with insults differently, you can't really tell someone to harden up because you don't get offended. There is no universal bar that determines when people are allowed to be offended.

xX*TACO-DOG*Xxdidn't he kill some woman too? whatever happened to that?
byuboundSure, I might be angered or hurt by what people have to say. However, I can go home and forget about it because I know who I am, and I know that there are people who don't give a crap about whatever flaws or problems I have. Being hurt and having your day/night/life ruined are completely different things.
WattsYeah, and that's good, obviously, but I also doubt you've had to deal with people saying awful things to you every day for years, the way many transgender people do. I would imagine that getting called an "it" every day for 5 or 10 or 15 years it would start to become more hurtful than if it's an isolated incident.
This isn't directed at you now, but for me the biggest thing is what does one gain from making these jokes? Cause I mean it isn't really that funny, we've all heard all of them before so many times that they're just not that funny anymore, and you're potentially hurting someone's feelings in the process. So what's really the point? You aren't really making people laugh, and you're potentially hurting someone else in the process, so why do it?

nocturnalI don't agree with it but you have to realize that society isn't going to be accepting of it at least until a couple decade's from now. If I decide to go out in public today and wear a dress yeah people are going to ridicule and say things to me. I would understand that and it's my choice to do it anyway. If being ridiculed bothers you that much then you can dress up and be the gender you think you should have been in front of your friends or in the privacy of your own home. No matter what your campaign says there's no way you're going to change the views of people set in their ways and become accepting of it. You just have to wait for the next gernaration.
jim_laheyi clicked on this thread because i thought park city..then i saw the shit show
WattsRight, but there are lots of people who make jokes about these sorts of things without really believing them (e.g. people in this thread calling Caitlyn Jenner an "it." I doubt the people doing it truly believe Jenner no longer deserves a gender pronoun), which I don't really get because these jokes are generally well worn and no longer all that funny (again, look at this thread, two people made the exact same "it" joke, we've all heard it so many times it's no longer funny), so what's the point if it doesn't get laughs, and could hurt someone?
nocturnalThat's life man people are going to make fun of you for being different walk into any public school. I think people calling transexuals it is very very low on the list of problems we have to deal as a society.
mirozCan the issues of sensitivity and political correctness be decoupled?
I think many people are confused with all the different identifications around these days. I think that confusion coupled with the sometimes seemingly aggressive nature of those sensitive to those identifications makes many people defensive, forcing them to the position that 'PC discourse is stupid.'
There is nothing stupid about being respectful of other people's identities. If someone wants to be called a certain name, you do it. Why is it any different with other words of identification?
Political correctness - to me - is synonymous with respecting others. It gets called 'PC' (and the negative connotations that come along with that) because politicians act consciously to not offend so as not to frivolously lose votes, but I think the overarching ideals of respecting others are true and sound.
In my mind, there's nothing wrong with saying what you want to say until you see otherwise. I think the safest thing to do is to go about your business as usual but keep an open mind so that when someone says "I prefer these gender pronouns", you can do your best to respect their wishes.
Sure, people can be oversensitive, but that's on them. To err is human. People make mistakes. If someone jumps down your throat correcting you about something you said once (eg. misidentifying someone using the incorrect gender pronoun), they can fuck off - they are not respecting you. A simple polite correction, followed by your acknowledgement of their wishes all that is necessary.
Let's all be friends.
YoungDaphI agree. The pussification of society is getting out if hand. Yea, words can hurt but is it really worth ending your life? Thats just excessive. But whatever, one less fucked up person in the gene pool i suppose.
S.J.WWhat if you have a son and he's gay and he ends his life because of these so called jokes? It's not just one joke made by one person. It's the constant outcast by society which makes these kids kill themselves. See how long you can last getting called names ever day before you have a mental break down.
