Problems with ski techs messing your gear up

hey guys, i was wondering if you have ever had problems with ski shops and their techs messing up your gear

any horror stories, simple things that ticked you off, or any other problems just tell me about them!

yup thy like to mountem in the wrong spots drill multiple holes in ski make sure they do it right bc if they dont they owe you a new set of skis

I took my skis to Scheels to get them mounted and the heel piece on the right ski wiggles around a bit. Last year my ski fell off on a landing and I hit my head and got a concussion, but that might've just been the fact that the DINs are too low.

Or Maybe it's because they're Squires

I took my k2 recoils in with marker griffons, to have them remounted. Got them back and only realized when I got home that they just moved the adjustable plate up. I even marked exactly where I wanted them remounted. Really pissed me off because it cost 50 bucks, but I took them back and they remounted them

In one town I lived in there was a shop notorious for their skills in mountain bindings. Every time I saw somebodies ski rip to shit in the park I'd be like "Did you get those mounted at ______"

"Yup!"


Could have been coincidences but it seemed like either their mounting skills were mediocre, or their shop was build on an indian burial ground and every piece of gear they sold was cursed.

The guys at my local shop used to long of screws and they made dimples in my bases. I took them in and they fixed it for free.

the guys we fired from our shop were criminals. When we caught on to what they were doing we went to our customers and made sure they checked their skis for dimples (caused by drilling too deep), double mounts ( tech fucked up and remounted. then hid it), or crooked bindings.

be sure to do a thorough look at your gear when it comes back from a shop. there are some "Techs" that are just burn outs who dont care about their job.

often they won't center mount unless you explicitly ask for it so make sure you ask. Non-center mounted park skis are just stupid.

My local shop does this a lot. They always don't mount center when you ask. They mounted me and my friends park skis and recommended instead of true center. I got a new pair and I'm marking with tape this time where I want them mounted

I asked for a center mount on my last pair of skis.
I got them back from the shop and not only were they not center mounted - they were also mounted backwards.

The heel piece wiggling is just the bindings too.

But once my brake broke on my ski so I took it to the shop because they would do it for free and they put on a new one that was just a little too smallso the first time it ejected it just kept going Down the mountain

Last season I got new boots so I took my skis to be remounted at my local shop (who I was already pretty skeptical about) then on literally the last day of the season i went up to take my first laps of the day to find that my boot couldn't fit into my binding and that the heel piece had moved so I took them down to the ski shop at the mountain and the guy literally slid the whole heel piece off of my ski with no effort at all and did the same with the other ski too, he then told me that where ever I got them mounted was to lazy to take them off and remount them, and that they had just set them on the part that hold the binding on (sorry don't know the tech term) and that I was majorly luck they hadn't come off before and that I didn't have a torn muscle or worse because of it, I then proceeded to go back to my local shop threatening to sue them and got my money back, God must have been on my side or something this winter

I haven't seen it happen lately, but shops used to screw up Pivots on wide skis. I guess the original Rossi/Look race jig didn't go wide enough. I still remind techs every time beforehand.

just got my new skis mounted, no complaints about the shop, only worried about my own decision making. Got my Devastators mounted at recommended point, and all my other skis are center mounted, so i feel like they are gonna feel weird to me at first. Going from center mounted park skis and center mounted Fujas (same ski as Shredititor 102) to a full reverse camber, charging ski mounted at factory recommended point. wish me luck. worst case scenario, i get em re mounted to center.

Quick shoutout to Pro-Ski Seattle for being an awesome group of guys by the way!!

got new skis under warranty due to delam of the edge.

wrote on a piece of paper, true centre (-0mm) for my griffons to be mounted...

they mounted on squires... like wtf. I wrote griffons on the sheet..

still haven't collected my skis even though it has been like weeks since the stuff up since I'm too scared to see if they would mess up the mounting a second time.

even though it's going to be my park ski, I'm still ticked of how there is going to be random holes

My cousin got his first pair of park skis last year. They mounted the bindings backwards.

Squires are pieces of crap unless you're a 7 year old doing 50-50s on boxes. I use squires on my summer setup and I usually catch edge because the squires don't transfer the pressure from my boots to my skis. The next step up is the way to go. Griffons never fail.

that shop should replace your skis if they messed your mount up. they have ruined the integrity of your ski.

When I took my skis in to get mounted they did the whole "your boots are to beat up and did not pass our inspection to be used for your bindings to be mounted...BUT you could always just buy new boots from us!" Thing.

Damn that really sucks. Do you think I should get griffons and just remount my skis or am I alright with Squires for another year? I'll still be trying 7s and stuff

this place is just the absolute worst. They charge $75 to mount and they most likely will get it wrong. there prices for EVERYTHING are just insane, they tried to sell me an SPK for 400 bucks and got angry when i told them that price was way over MSRP

one time i went to just get my skis waxed and sharpened (now i just do it myself) and i don't know what the fuck they did, but when i got them back they were un-rideable it was actually terrifying, i doped in to the north face at mt. snow and couldn't even get past the cat track without falling. I thought i had magically forgot how to ski and was loosing my mind. Took them in to be re-tuned at the hill and BAM they rode like a dream again.

The worst part was when i complained they just shrugged at me and walked away.

the $75 price is fairly universal. its high, but unfortunately its hard to find it cheaper... and the sharpen-- they probably didnt detune the front and rear edges on your tips and tails so that you dont catch an edge. surprisingly makes a difference

Tech got a bunch of work orders messed up, when I arrived to pick up my skis they had a completely different binding on them.

Its always really frustrating when you take your bindings off your skis to get mounted to a new pair and there is an extra set of holes hidden underneath. If they're going to fuck up, please do the decent thing and tell me about it and we can work something out.
At least they didn't pull out while skiing. If they pulled out and I saw those extra holes I would go right back to that shop and send them a strongly worded email.

75 sounds pretty high to me, over here in WA I'd say average is like $40

Yea 75 is the highest I have ever seen, even my local hill only charges 45. I found a great tech at sports authority of all place. Dudes a wiz behind the workbench and charges me $30 bucks!

haha that would be ideal but really the holes don't affect the ski too much. It's only really after 3 redrills where the core begins to become a little dodgy.

it's just that I wrote the instructions down by hand, and so did a guy that worked there to the ski tech, and he still managed to stuff up.

It might be understandable if they had been symmetrical and not had a centering line that clarified which end was forward.

All depends on the person and tools available. I certainly wouldn't suggest this for everyone.

Plenty of very skilled ski techs out there who charge fair prices.

mounted my filthy riches wrong then never told me. remounted them with the bindings over the old holes then preceded not to fill them. my ski got filled with water and rotted then my heel piece ripped out and pulled the top sheet off. took them back to the shop because i found the extra set of holes. They said they didn't mount them so i brought in a receipt. They then told me that an extra set of holes wouldn't compromise the integrity of my ski even though the holes were practically touching.

Go back and demand a new pair. Thats all on the shop.

They just wouldn't do anything about it and even with a receipt they barely would admit they mounted them. I just shit all over their shop whenever possible now.

on3p sent me a good ski out of a warrantied pair because they were the coolest guys ever. But there wasn't really anything i could do because they just kept with the whole extra holes aren't a big deal so its not our fault it ripped out. they wouldn't even touch the whole water logged and rotted thing.

Had a pair of ARVs mounted backwards at Sports Chalet and then remounted without telling me. When I took off the bindings to sell the skis I noticed the extra holes. I had to make a big stink and go over the Shop Manger's head to get a replacement pair of skis.

2) if your skis get mounted in the wrong spot, you are not entitled to free skis. you are entitled to a highly discounted or free correct mount

3) thoroughly check your skis out before leaving the shop.

I disagree with this. If I am (a) explicit and clear in laying out exactly what I want, (b) the tech agrees that he understands and agrees to do it, and (c) does not do what we agreed upon -- then I would feel entirely justified in demanding replacement skis. The tech both failed to provide the agreed upon service, and damaged my property. The shop has to make me whole -- I want a refund and I want replacement skis.

I would certainly not accept a free remount -- not a chance I would let the same store touch my skis again.

there's quite a bit of liability involved with mounting, boots with too much wear have uneven pressure in the binding and are not going to react consistently. but the good news is, you might be able to replace the lugs on your boots depending on the model, which is a much cheaper alternative to new boots.
