What to do in an avalanche...

In light of recent heavy snowfalls, and the everpresent danger of avalanches, i thought it might be good to have a thread dedicated to this that people could search for. Please post usefull tips you have for people so that they might have that extra chance of surviving such and awesome show of force.

Seriously ive heard your should 'swim' to stay on top. but i dont know im from the east coast so we dont have to worry about it cuz we have no snow.

its put your HEAD. and try to use one hand to make an air pocket. stay in a spot where you can use your muscles so dont be laid out. let your poles go they can help people find you. mainly make an air pocket.

cover your mouth so snow doesnt get in it and suffocate u. when the avalance is done burying ur ass, if ur still alive, spit in order to find which way is up (whichever way the spits falls is towards the ground). begin attempting to dig urself out. good luck

pray, but seriously, digging doesn't work. try and get out of it first, but if you can't get rid of your poles and skis rightaway, wait on your pack. try and swim, but that probly won't work. as you start to slow dupm your pack. try and swim climb to the surface as you slow, as the snow cements in around you try and make an air hole. oh and you have very little time if you are burried, so you better have on a beacon, and hope your friends know how to use thiers, oh and they better have a shovle to dig you out, cause your hands won't cut it in avy debris. oh and did i mention praying.

its nearly impossible to dig yourself out unless you are really close to the surface or in one big pocket.
just make a big air pocket in front of your face with your arms as the snow slows down.

ski cutting is scetch though. you really just need to take an avalanch class if you are serious about getting in the back country. i took one this weekend, and i now realize that i have been lucky to not cause a big slide. there is so much you never think of. just take a class.

once you are in the avalanche try and stay on top, but dont fight it and try to stay in one place. once u go under you lose all orientation and u dont know which way is up or down. If u r buried and cant get out, hope ur beacon works. supposedly u have 15 minutes before u have an 'ice mask' over your face and then u suffocate. Dont try to dig out unless u can see light in the snow, if its dark u are too deep and u will just speed up suffocation if u dig.

Have the right safty gear and know how to read the snow is a good start. Dont ski shit that you know is going to slide, unless its super sick. If one goes off, Freaking run. Stay on top if you get stuck in in it. If your buried all the way, make an air pocket to breath from and pray to God that your partner changed the batteries on his beeper. Ohter wise someone is getting new gear that day, and guess what its not you.

The best avalanche prevention is between your ears. Avalung's are 100$ and can considerably extend the amount of time you can survive, buried. If you don't have a beacon and you're completly buried consider yourself dead, they will find you next spring. Having the right saftey gear and knowledge of how to use it isn't enough. All of your friends also need to have the gear and know how to use it. Having all the avy gear(probe, avalung, beacon, shovel) isn't a freepass to tramp around the backcountry skiing every wind-loaded chute or open bowl of fresh. 33% of people who are buried by an avalanche SURVIVE. Those are probably the people with the right gear and the right buddies. If you go into the backcountry without taking a course, practicing beacon retrieval and reading some books on the science of avalanches, reading the daily report, exc, you will eventually die. There isn't a powder run in the world worth dying over (well maybe).
Forget about techniques for surviving once your buried, because at that point you've already lost the game, read up, practice and don't be too arrogant to call off a trip or a slope.

First. Soil yourself. Dont fucking make a post about this, its moronic. Take an avalanche saftey class, and know how to read the snow conditions. Just because YOU have the right PROTECTION doenst mean you cant trigger one and trap someone else. Knowing first hand, it really pisses me off. People go into the BC with a shovel, probe and a beacon and theyre set to survive, but they neglect that there might just be other skiers out there. Stay on the fucking trails and leave the BC to the people who know what theyre doing.

the only way to escape from an avalanche is to avoid it ... i'm from europfe (alps) and we have to deal with avalanches all the time. Dont even think about digging yourself out with youre hands, it doesnt work. Once i got burried just over my knees, no chance to get out without a shovel! the snow gets hard as concrete! Praying is a good thing, the best is a beakon and good buddies who will get you out within 15 minutes max. (90% of victimes survive the first 15 minutes, after 16 minutes only 50% survive ...)
